Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

Hopefully this will go down well;

Exclusive: 'Tory candidate branded 'callous' over article questioning if NHS 'worth fighting for'
NHS doctor Neil Shastri-Hurst, who is fighting a by-election campaign in North Shropshire, also said those 'working on the Covid frontline are not heroes'

DGRossetti · 11/12/2021 16:52

@Peregrina

I am not holding my breath for the North Shropshire by election. I think the Tories will get back in with, like the Bexley by election, something like a 4,000 majority. Which will still be something of an upset, but it will be another Brexit stooge to go to Parliament.
But I suspect the Tories will know it was not because of Boris.

One reason the Tories have survived this long is a complete lack of sentimentality at it's heart. It's us little people they want to be nostalgic and patriotic.

DGRossetti · 11/12/2021 17:07

Meanwhile Dominic Raab is opposing Priti Patels plans to remove reform the Human Rights Act.

These are the interesting times wished upon us by the people of China, as we torched their cities to force them to buy our opium.

www.newstatesman.com/politics/2021/12/scrapping-our-human-rights-is-brexit-2-0-for-raab-and-johnson

interesting point:

If the Nationality and Borders Bill goes through as currently amended, it will run in direct contravention to the HRA, and is prepared by the Tories as the next iteration of Brexit. Britain, having quit the EU, will be forced to leave the European Convention if it scraps the HRA, or amend it as Raab intends. That, in turn, will void the Brexit withdrawal deal.

Storminamu · 11/12/2021 19:11

I feel completely relaxed about it, as the college has made it clear that you need to be absolutely amazing to get a deferred offer. DC is great, but perhaps not absolutely amazing in the context of Cambridge. And has the option to apply again during the gap year. So I'm seeing it as a useful experience + practice run! I'm glad that the online interview meant that there's less investment. I'm more concerned about the gap year, the way things are going with Covid.

Storminamu · 11/12/2021 19:12

Wrong thread - apologies. Though any gap year suggestions for the EU would be welcome!

Liz Truss may very well be prime minister a year from now. What's so amazing about this is that her reputation amongst Tory members seems to be mostly based on the fact that she was able to roll over trade deals we already had as an EU member. Selling standing still for growth.

Opal8 · 11/12/2021 21:05

@eve

Could you tell me a bit more? Dc have dual nationalty and EU passports

If they withdraw from the ECHR then I think the Americans will take the gloves off over the GFA.

Britain as we have seen is already suffering trade wise with the current effects of a partially implemented Brexit. But at the same time further increases in e.g. fuel prices have yet to come into force. If the Withdrawal Agreement is voided then things will get even worse. The Britannia Unchained mob might welcome this but will the Red Wall? There will be plenty of wailing that the EU is bullying us, but how far will then get them out of a hole?

Peregrina · 11/12/2021 21:16

I feel though for me, it must be like how moderate Germans felt during 1928-1933 - it can't get much worse, can it? It could, it did.

Ds1 and I are students of history

We are both seeing scary parallels to the 1930s

Why do people on this thread assume our children have EU passports? It's a UK site. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

mathanxiety · 12/12/2021 02:30

Lots of UK residents have Irish passports, Polish passports, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Swedish passports.

There are also American posters, Canadians, Australians, etc.

The Brexit threads in particular have attracted a lot of posters who are aware in a very personal away of the potential of Brexit to affect their lives thanks to their 'foreign' origin or roots.

I don’t think people do. When we’ve discussed passports previously the main issue was often that people had missed out on dual nationality by a generation. If I’d had any inkling that something like Brexit might happen, I’d have registered my children as Irish foreign births when they were young in order to ensure Irish citizenship for my grandchildren, but that ship has sailed.

I hope they are doing as I am, and preparing for a life abroad then. Bearing in mind for us there are now two routes to that. Voluntary and enforced.

I wonder what all the other countries in the world that will be forced to take ex-UK citizens will do when the time comes ?

Better to do it when you have a choice than wait till you haven't. Or leave it until you wish you were deported, but find yourself on another train.

If I were to be deported, I wonder if I could move to Ireland ?

Opal8 · 12/12/2021 10:09

That's always been my plan
I have family there

I suppose my biggest fear - with Patel at the HO - is not being allowed to sell the house/liquidate our assets.

Now...what does that remind me of?....

Well you will already be a criminal, so seizing your assets is just paperwork. I don't need to read the act to know that it will shit on pure-bred UK citizens who were treasonous enough to marry someone with a less pure bloodline, but we have to teach people to stick to the plan. The master plan, if you will.

Not so much fourth wave, as fourth reich perhaps ?

Although given a lot of Russian and Arab Tory donors would also be eligible for a Patel Pass under this law ...

I'm curious as to what status British citizens born to British nationals might have ? Since that's actual position for her. It would be an added insult if children of British Nationals are now deemed good enough for residence in the UK when back in the day British Nationals weren't.

DGRossetti · 12/12/2021 19:34

DW just asked if having another nationality due to being stupid enough to marry me means she is at risk of being kicked out of the UK ?
