Westministenders: The Beginning of Negotiations

Transition has a few hours left.

Then negotiations start and trade stops.

Far from being over, there are huge numbers of issues that lay unresolved.

And businesses both now in the UK and EU will cease to trade with each other just because the red tape is such a pain.

So whilst people will celebrate and think things are 'done' that just shows how much people are paying attention.

It will be interesting to see people gradually realising what has been lost...

Is there a link to a story about the palettes? I know that we weren't going to have enough, but not the latest.

jasjas1973 · 04/01/2021 18:41

Some specialist online retailers in various EU countries have said they will no longer deliver to UK addresses because of tax changes due to Brexit

I can vouch for this, several German bicycle suppliers will not post to the UK.
Now you can still (some) the stuff here but its a lot more expensive even pre brexit, they put prices in june 2016, so a double whammy... Less choice/more expensive.

Its not a question of uk manufacturers stepping up either, we just don't make this stuff and never have.

TonMoulin · 04/01/2021 18:41

Re Sweden and the ambassy stepping in,
Didn’t the government say recently that it’s not there to support BRITISH citizens overseas?

OchonAgusOchonO · 04/01/2021 18:44

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst - Apropos nothing in particular, this feast for the ears might warm the cockle of some of your hearts,:

I didn't know they had any pipes other than bagpipes in Scotland. What are they called? They're uileann pipes in Ireland.

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 18:45

Meanwhile the Brexit bonus is the gift which keeps on giving. Note I am not blaming the airport staff of any country.

With the Brooks saddles, they used to be made here. I am quite sure DH bought thinking that they were a British firm, although he suspected that they had been sold to the Americans, which it turned out he was wrong about.

You might find this useful, if you are planning to listen to the wafflesplaffer tonight.

Don't do the drinking version though, your contributions are valued and we don't want any regulars succumbing to liver disease.

DGRossetti · 04/01/2021 18:59

With the Brooks saddles, they used to be made here.

Yes, maybe.

But who is going to set up a brand new manufacturing facility in the UK to service just UK customers ? Because the RoW customers are already buying their kit elsewhere.

The only grim humour here will be the increasing fatigue of Brexiteer cheerleaders like IDS and JRM having to whizz around the airwaves berating people for not being positive as each story pops up.

Meanwhile, the UKs official 6 month amnesty for smugglers looks to be more and more the way to get ahead with Brexit.

God forgive me, I've just uttered words I never thought I'd say "Even fucking Corbyn would have been better than this. Or at least he would have had good people in his Cabinet ".
Jesus Christ.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/01/2021 19:33

Brookes saddles are made in England, but sent to parent firm in Italy for distribution worldwide, including back to the UK.

They are a thing of beauty.

Heartbreaking story Sad www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-55532469

The cynic in me wonders why it’s being released today though...

DrBlackbird · 04/01/2021 20:03

So who is shocked then? Schools closing, no exams etc. Maybe only Boris?

prettybird · 04/01/2021 20:04

So England is finally following Scotland and Wales in cancelling exams.

LouiseCollins28 · 04/01/2021 20:05

Lockdown Mk2!

DrBlackbird · 04/01/2021 20:06

But it's nothing to do with the gov't vacillation and dithering...no it's that darn South African virus!

Fair wind in our sails... was that in the bingo sheet?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/01/2021 20:06

Arse

Would have preferred ds2 to have A levels...thats from a purely selfish standpoint

LouiseCollins28 · 04/01/2021 20:08

Jeez, really sorry for your DS rufus. Same for lots of people I imagine but still hurts at an individual level Sad

Boris doen't sound too good I must say

TheABC · 04/01/2021 20:09

Not surprised. Just exasperated they had to wait until 8pm on Monday evening after primary schools opened to make the announcement.

I may hand in a bottle of gin to my school's headteacher tomorrow.

prettybird · 04/01/2021 20:12

It's shocking that BJ gets away with doing this statements a) not to Parliament and b) without taking any questions - whether that be from MPs or from journalists Angry

SabrinaThwaite · 04/01/2021 20:12

Same here @RufustheSniggeringReindeer - DS wanted to sit his GCSEs, but at least he’s had a first set of mocks.

I’m sure that was recorded - it started dead on 8.00pm for instance.
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/01/2021 20:14

Thanks louise

I just don’t think he will do quite so well with cags on two of his subjects, he would have done better in 5 MONTHS time

I just don’t think they’ll take 5MONTHS OF REVISION AND LESSONS!!! Into account

Im a bit tense 😀
