Good King BBBBaBoris looked out,
on the Port of Dover,
There the shit lay round about,
Deep around the stopover;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Tho’ the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Delivering stuff for Yule.

“Bugger SAGE and stand by me,
We've all stuff that needs selling,
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good league hence,
The other side the EU;
Though relations maybe tense,
He's trying to get goods through.”

“Oh god I need another wine,
I have many crisis to consider:
We must tell them its all fine,
I must not be seen to dither.”
SAGE and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together;
Through the nation's sad lament
and really crappy weather.

“Sire, our plight is darker now,
And the covid transmission stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how;
To keep Tier 2 much longer.”
“Soon we can drop their wage.
And treat them all more coldly
In Britain's new chrony age
A time to rob more boldly.”

In their master’s steps they trod,
On the quest to get minted;
Each and every last sod
Needs to be fingerprinted.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
DWP claimants are processing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
God its all so depressing.

I'm in tier 3 and some people in the closer to tier 2 area next to me are going to tier 2 for meals out and shopping. It isn't great, I understand why people are frustrated but it's not helping. Although I think the vast majority of the issues aren't to do with that, it is the Government's lack of planning and reluctance to act quickly enough after never learning their lessons.

MPs on call with health minister Nadhim Zahawi say he's hinting Tier 4 will come into effect for more areas from 26 December.

Sounds like big changes to be announced.

MP on the call says 47 local authorities are moving up two tiers, and 26 are moving up one tier.

This might be the final kick to the balls that our negotiators need to force a deal through.

I feel ashamed of the way this country have been treating the trapped lorry drivers.

Matty has just started...30 mins to go Xmas Grin

^EU sources have said a Brexit deal could be reached in the next 24 hours.

“There is an air of optimism,” one EU diplomat told @rtenews. “The final touches are between [European Commission president Ursula] Von der Leyen and Boris [Johnson, the British prime minister].”^

2/ The source said the Commission president was in touch with EU leaders.

3/ “There’s a very strong push to get it done before Christmas. The idea that everyone comes back again on Sunday or Monday to start again… that will happen if necessary but there does seem to be a strong push to get it done before Christmas,” the diplomat said.

4/ It’s understood fisheries remains the final outstanding offer. The EU appears to be sticking to the most recent offer of a 25pc transfer of the value of fish caught by EU boats in UK waters to British fishermen.

5/ It's understood member states officials have already begun drafting legal texts which will allow for the formal acceptance by capitals of any deal, should agreement be reached

"from 26th December". Not impressed with that. Act Now Hancock!

Interesting the UK wants to treat individual members states of the EU differently. Suggesting they still don't fucking get it.

Imagine trying to treat Louisiana differently to New York ?

(We'll put to one side the hypocrisy of Westminster wanting the EU to treat the UK as a whole at the same time ....)

6/ Another diplomat says: “it does look like this can come together. I does look like this can come together as early as today...”

7/ I’m told there was important moment last night on fisheries and that VDL and Johnson have been instrumental in developments in the past 24 hours. “It’s all fish” says diplomat.

It’s not just fish in itself tho imo, it’s the threat of the U.K. reneging on fish and the EU retaliating with tariffs.

From Bloomberg:

The EU wants to be able to impose tariffs on the U.K. if, after the transition period, the government restricts access to its waters. In its latest compromise offer, the U.K. said it would accept tariffs on fisheries but not in other areas, such as on energy, as demanded by the bloc.

I’d be surprised if the level playing field and governance issues are resolved.

MyNameIsArthur · 23/12/2020 16:00

PMK thank you! Seems like there could be some exciting news on the horizon!

ListeningQuietly · 23/12/2020 16:09

Tier 4 round here.
Not surprised.
Its the people eating out.
A pub I walked past had a sign saying
Our Substantial Meal costs £2.50
A cafe a bit further on was FULL of people less than 2m apart, chatting between tables, mixing households.
FFS

A Brexit deal will take the pressure off
but still leave the people in the shit.

TatianaBis · 23/12/2020 16:11

I’m not sure how exciting a bad deal is. It’s a disaster either way.

Politically a deal may be worse for the Tories as it will be clear Brexit is a disaster, at least No Deal can be blamed on the EU.

An FTA cannot deliver on:

  • frictionless trade
  • passporting or equivalence for financial (or other) services
  • access to agencies programmes & databases

So the government will have to explain why their deal is ruinous when they promised a better deal than the one we had.

Thanks!!

He is excellent if I do say so myself! And I still maintain that he'd be better at sorting out the Dover situation than what's currently happening!

YoutubeZoom · 23/12/2020 16:27

We are Tier 3, and other than food shops Newcastle was empty yesterday. Certainly not like normally. I checked cafés and there were no queues at lunchtime. (I rarely venture in town, so this might be normal nowadays.)

Ah but which of them has got their paws on 75% of the other's portion of fish? Grin

The fish are wild.

They do not belong to anybody Wink

ArrowsOfMistletoe · 23/12/2020 16:37

We're going from Tier 2 into Tier 4. Understandable - we are surrounded by Tier 4 areas, people are being stupid (people from Tier 3 London going to shop in Tier 2 Cambridge) and rates are rising in any case. We were going to have a tiny quiet Christmas in any case with our single adult legal support bubble person.
