I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

Erm, what's that all about BigChoc?

To go back to the thread - speaking German we were asked if we were Dutch or Danish. I often used to get mistaken for a French woman - no idea why - I am a typical English pear shape.

DGRossetti · 22/10/2020 11:59

@Peregrina

I understand that Belgium can throw people out if they haven't found a job within three months- is that correct?

If so, Patel's scheme sounds like something we could have done all along if we chose to, and was nothing to do with the EU, but it plays well to the true BeLeavers.

We all knew the "control of our borders" line was a crock from the off. The UK has always been able to exclude undesirables - EU or not.

It's just too funny for words that now the UK has decided to implement it, the information needed to do so is being withdrawn.

FWIW it's not just Belgium, several other EU countries have similar..i.e. despite the existence of Schengen, FOM (which of course was strictly FOM for work purposes) you still need to demonstrate you are not going to arrive "in country" and then promptly become a burden on that state..

As you say believing otherwise has played well with some.

DGRossetti · 22/10/2020 12:33

Toby Young announcing he's a massive fan of Scottish Independence.

Sometimes your tongue is so far into your cheek it sticks out the other side, DGR.

Shrillharridan · 22/10/2020 13:25

Toby Young is a prolapsed amusing of a human being.

His musings should be treated as some sort of anal leakage.

Shrillharridan · 22/10/2020 13:26

Prolapsed anus!
Why doesn't my phone like "anus"?
A prolapsed anus isn't remotely amusing.

DGRossetti · 22/10/2020 13:31

I object ! Grin

In this case there is no tongue in cheek at all. Anyone who believes in English independence axiomatically is agitating for Scottish independence. The two causes are identical in result.

If Toby Young had been reading these threads a few months ago, he'd know that I said ages ago that the next logical step for the SNP would be to see if they could work on the thicker English nationalists to push for English independence, as it will be much harder - if not impossible - for Westminster to ignore them.

So it's entirely fair to characterise TY as a cheerleader for Scottish independence. Even if he doesn't know it himself - and let's face it, any increase in the sum of "Things Toby Young doesn't know" isn't really going to be noticeable anyway.

Interesting on the Food bill increases thread
how little people understand about trade and business.

It does show up how badly the "stay in the EU" side failed in 2016 to explain the advantages to the 99% of free movement of goods and the labour to provide them

Project fear innit ?

Indeed, but they emphasised the negatives not the positives
a lesson to be taken forward

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 22/10/2020 13:53

Have to agree with your last sentence, DGR Grin

DGRossetti · 22/10/2020 13:54

No amount of emphasising the positives would have helped. The deck was stacked.

And I'm a little bit wary of descending in to a world where we have to put up with Leavers whinging that it's the fault of Remainers not explaining it properly that meant they swallowed all the lies of the leave campaign.

If I found myself leading a mob with pitchforks and portable gallows, I'd head for Fleet St. Not Westnminster.

borntobequiet · 22/10/2020 13:56

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

borntobequiet those terms were not used interchangeably when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. I was in Scotland however; I assume you weren't.
I wouldn't have expected it to be so in Scotland...though oddly enough, as someone with an Irish background (and my mother was born before Irish independence), none of my family seemed to find it untoward.

Not just food - though I realise this doesn't cover essentials......apparently William Shatner of all people was tweeting about it last week

Mrslaughan
I linked to the new customs rules a couple of weeks ago after they appeared on my Linkedin.
Omnishambles clusterfuck is a fair approximation

mrslaughan · 22/10/2020 14:27

Well I don't think Sadiq will be asking them to take this down

Most posters on that thread suggesting that when the bills start hitting the mat next year is when we'll see the backlash. Just as Boris is being waved off, if present thinking is correct.

William Shatners involvement is interesting. From appearances he is closely involved with his own "merch", and his online store (with more smarts than the entire UK government ) has flagged up the impact of the changes. I suggest if you want something from www.shatnerstore.com/ then you might need to get your skates on.

Yes I remember that LQ and have been quietly sticking up on things I buy from Europe ever since - things not generally stocked here , and buy them direct.
Interesting the National press - and the Times (that I don't generally read but class as brexitty) are reporting on it. Abs not trying to put a positive slant on it?

mrslaughan · 22/10/2020 14:32

My husband is quite a Star Trek fan....

Eminently sensible.
And my fingers and toes are crossed that far more people have stockpiles and backstops than are letting on
as then it means the food supply chain will have a hope of keeping those who CANNOT stash
fed in January and February

I have a friend who is a single mum and very stretched at the mo..... I have extra for her.....I have extra yeast in case sister/cousin haven't headed my warning to stock up......
My husband when I started thought I was mad.... he's now bought an extra pantry cupboard
And flour! If you had asked me 2?years ago would I be buying flour in 16kg sacks and holding onto spares.....I would have thought you were mad, even though I was worried about the effect of Brexit. Covid has demonstrated how much of an issue supply chains are. But interesting - things that I thought would be a problem we're not....
Though 3 months into next year eggs and chicken could be an issue.....
