Westministenders: Can you tell your Rs from Elbows?

This week Mark Sedwill has resigned (or was he pushed?) and David Frost (chief brexit lead) was appointed National Security Adviser in a move that enraged Theresa May. The former prime minister felt that his appointment was unprofessional and that was a political appointment not an independent one and that he lacked experience. Of course in terms of national security we still haven't had that report on Russia and I don't believe The Intelligence and Security Committee has yet been named (not sat since Johnson was appointed as PM).

We have passed the deadline for extending transition and we have now apparently said that negotiations on the end of transition will finish at the end of September.

The bill ending Free movement of people has been signed, amongst much fanfare by the Conservatives saying they have delivered on the Referendum promise. However we might have up to 3million Hong Kongers who we are willing to allow into the country which might not go down too well with those who were unhappy with 'unrestricted EU immigration'.

We also have the demonstration of utter incompetence, outsourcing and lack of coordination and communication from central government and local government in the covid-19 crisis. A national scandal that isn't being properly reported by the press and leave you with the very large question of who is this government serving? If its contract with Deloittes over testing didn't require them to report positive tests to Public Health England, what was the point in the testing? How can this be consistent with 'The Government’s new approach to biosecurity will bring together the UK’s world-leading epidemiological expertise and fuse it with the best analytical capability from across Government in an integrated approach.' and will provide real time analysis and assessment of infection outbreaks at a community level, to enable rapid intervention before outbreaks grow.?

The growing feeling that Brexit is being exploited by this government for personal interests and those of big business at the expense of the general public is one which was feared and grows harder to argue against by the day.

I am reading this in disbelief! Is it fake news or something? Surely Mark Francois didn't threaten to send Dominic Cummings to sort out the Armed Forces! Shock

DGRossetti · 07/07/2020 19:02

TBH I can see Waitrose and the Co op getting round it by saying that they will only buy from farms they own - which is allowed in the US

And I can see them not being allowed to. After all, the US and UK only ever paid lip-service to the notion of the free market anyway.

Your turn.

London-born twins face deportation to different countries

Taken into care after their mum died of cancer
and social services never applied for citizenship for them

  • I hope care leavers are made aware asap that they need to do this for themselves

JeSuisPoulet · 07/07/2020 19:36

@Tanith that is more concerning because Francois actually thinks he is a thread (as well as he is using him as the strong man over Boris) presumably because he manage to oust Sedwill?

As I said if anyone still thinks Boris is running the country...

There is no pretence, is there, that Johnson is PM! I suspect that the MoD does need reform, but I would think that Cummings will meet his match with them!

Why aren't the Brexiters up in arms about an unelected SPAD running the show? They felt so strongly about unelected bureaucrats not so many months ago.

DGR
Vertical supply chains are most definitely a part of the system all over the world
McD do it as do KFC as do major food retailers everywhere
if the US tried to stop Waitrose sourcing from Leckford they would be on v v v shaky ground and Waitrose would tell them to eff orf

ListeningQuietly · 07/07/2020 20:33

BigChoc
That was the story I was reading when I spotted the link to young Sunak earlier

the fact that the Home Office have said that they will deport one lad to the Domincan Republic when their dad came from Dominica
1000 km - London to Marseille
error margin
is to be expected

You guys do you realise it's not a Land Rover being built in France ? It's the Ineos.... which is a bit of a vanity project, but actually looks like it's been done really well. It's meant to be the true defender replacement (not made by LR). My brother describes it as looking like a defender has had a three way with a G wagon, and an old FJ Cruiser.
It's the vanity project of Jim Radcliffe - who I didn't realise was a brexiteer....sooooooo considering we were going to revive UK manufacturing- that was what it was all about, it's a pity he isn't setting up his new project up here (to replace the car manufacturing that we are loosing....) the defender and off roading people are very excited about it. I think also farmers/people who have to tow heavy loads will be very interested in it.

Jim Radcliffe is trying to build a palace in Beaulieu
despite being a Brexiter now based in Monaco
he's a git of the first order
and that is LONG before you look into his business ethics / activities

Peregrina · 07/07/2020 21:34

I read that LQ and assumed that the Dominican Republic could just refuse to accept someone who had absolutely no connection to them.
Let's hope that now a stink has been made of it, they will start to backtrack and say it was a mistake.

However, other countries do similar. I know of someone who was deported from Canada back to Britain, after he had been in prison, even though he'd left the UK as a child. He had a British Passport though - these two young men probably don't have passports at all.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/07/2020 21:57

Yes @mrslaughan - hence my post saying it looked liked a hybrid of the three best thought of 4WDs. Starting price will also be £40k plus.

And an FJ45 or an FJ70 will still knock spots off it.

mrslaughan · 07/07/2020 22:07

Sorry Sabrina I didn't see your post - the app - having lots of trouble with posting.... posts not loading, thread not updating.

A brilliant thread from a GP about Covid preparations (or lack thereof).

Sostenueto · 08/07/2020 07:50

so the Government's new joint Biosecurity Centre is to be prominent player in co- ordinating the response to Covid 19. The JBC will be asked to develop novel ways to quickly identify and contain potential outbreaks. SAGE will meet less often and it's dub groups will report to ministers. Some fear there may be insufficient expertise in the JBC for the job....

Well that's the scientists got out the way.☹️

Brexit 'customs chaos’ looms

In June 2020, an EU Select Committee report found that frictionless UK-Ireland border through the use of technology may not be possible, as they only have the capacity to mitigate rather than to eliminate friction arising from customs checks and processes.

And

The Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) is intended to allow export trucks to declare goods ahead of reaching the border, allowing for smoother traffic flow, particularly at busier ports such as Dover.

However, HMRC has yet to begin the build of the IT system, MPs have been told, by the head of EU Exit at the Port of Dover. “We’re still at the stage of making sure the definition and the specification of the system is correct so it’s built with a fighting chance of doing what it’s needed to do.”

“The French customs have tested their system. They’ve done it a couple of times and established that the data flow worked. The challenge is to make sure the lorries go where they’re told to go, but there are ways of achieving that. I am certain that the GVMS system will similarly be tested, but it needs to be built before it can be tested,” he said.

Cummings to drop in on Britain's most secret defence installations

Sydney Morning Herald Ffs!

Lucy Fisher @LoS_fisher
Dominic Cummings appears to have his sights on major defence reform!

After MI5/MI6 trips, now set to visit:
- SAS in Hereford
- SBS in Dorset
- DSTL at Porton Down
- Rapid Capabilities Office at Farnborough
- Defence Intelligence at Wyton

Cummings’ visits to key defence sites were listed in “internal correspondence”, says @latikambourke

“Defence Minister Ben Wallace expressly forbade ministry officials from talking to No 10 or Cummings directly about the itinerary for his planned trip”

No 10 yet to comment...
