Oh dear.

Who'd've thought?

And here we are, hurtling towards a No Deal Brexit.

Or how short are political memories?

Are there any good broadcast stories on this? Sounds like one I'd like to settle down to in podcast format.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 04/06/2020 09:02

If only anyone had predicted this in the Brexit referendum debate. The Brexies would surely have listened and seen the error of their ways.

ListeningQuietly · 04/06/2020 14:55

Such a surprise ......

Clavinova · 06/06/2020 13:51

BBC interview here, 03 Jun 2020 -

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/business-52900529/nissan-says-uk-factory-under-no-deal-brexit-threat?

BBC Report here, 28 May 2020 -

"Nissan backs UK plant but protests erupt in Spain" -

"Nissan's UK factory in Sunderland will stay open as the Japanese carmaker carries out a global restructuring amid the coronavirus pandemic."

"The carmaker also announced it will close its factory in Barcelona with the loss of about 2,800 jobs, prompting protests at the Spanish plant."

Oh dear, Clavino-nothing...

The BBC article in your link is dated 3rd June - exactly the same day Miljea started this thread! I think you can safely assume that we had all seen the news 6 weeks ago.

Nissan repeated the same warnings (regarding tariffs - not necessarily an FTA) in October 2019 and February/March 2020 - whether 10% tariffs will be imposed remains to be seen.Nevertheless, Nissan has pushed on with its £400m investment in the Sunderland plant;

www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/nissan-sunderland-plant-brexit-qashqai-uk-car-maker-factory-a9383491.html

Coronavirus and recession may scupper plans regardless of Brexit of course.

Clavinova · 24/07/2020 09:53

HannibalHayes

I should have checked my own links before replying - my first link is the same as yours. Grin

Ah, as predicted, the Brexit loons are gearing up to blame Covid for Brexit mucking everything up.

Quelle surprise...

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 09:37

Ah, as predicted

Predicted?? You appear to be 6 weeks behind everyone else on this thread.

And now JCB (Brexiteers) are investing in Germany whilst cutting jobs in the UK.

Waits for Clavino-nothing to cut and paste some spurious nonsense...

HannibalHayes · 25/07/2020 11:25

More but we knew exactly what we were voting for...

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 13:11

And now JCB (Brexiteers) are investing in Germany whilst cutting jobs in the UK.

JCB Germany first announced they were building their new headquarters in Cologne in September 2014 - officially opened in October 2019.

£50 million investment in JCB Cab Systems factory in the UK last year;
www.jcb.com/en-gb/news/2019/01/world-leading-jcb-cabs-factory-project-forges-ahead

But yes, coronavirus job cuts (diggers) this year;

"In 2020 we had planned to sell and produce over 100,000 machines. With so much global uncertainty, that figure right now is looking more like 50,000 machines. In the UK, around 85 per cent of everything we manufacture is exported and our UK factories will now produce machines at half the rate we had planned just a few months ago. As a result, we have no choice but to align our cost base to demand for the rest of the year. It is deeply regrettable that we have had to take these steps to restructure the business and that it will have an impact on so many people. No business could have anticipated the scale of the COVID-19 crisis and its economic consequences."

Although 1,000 jobs appear to have been saved;
www.itv.com/news/central/2020-05-21/nearly-1-000-shop-floor-jobs-saved-at-jcb

"Waits for Clavino-nothing to cut and paste some spurious nonsense" ...

23rd July -
"South Korea falls into recession as exports slump" ... "from computer memory chips to cars."

Are you blaming Brexit?

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 13:33

More but we knew exactly what we were voting for ...

"Helen Whately MP calls to prevent A251 at Faversham becoming HGV rat-run after post-Brexit lorry park opens in Ashford."

A 'rat-run' implies fast moving traffic - at least she is not expecting a gridlock!

HannibalHayes · 25/07/2020 13:38

JCB trying not to blame Brexit?

Why on Earth would that be I wonder...

ListeningQuietly · 25/07/2020 13:50

Clav
Faversham is nowhere near Ashford.
Please look at a map before pasting

HannibalHayes · 25/07/2020 14:17

Maybe they're similar in Cyrillic...

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 14:31

JCB trying not to blame Brexit?
Why on Earth would that be I wonder...

I wonder;

"Renault is cutting 15,000 jobs worldwide as part of a €2bn (£1.8bn) cost-cutting plan after seeing sales plunge because of the virus pandemic."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52845849#:~:text=Renault%20is%20cutting%2015%2C000%20jobs,on%20electric%20cars%20and%20vans.

Maybe they're similar in Cyrillic...

You learn something new every day. Grin

HannibalHayes · 25/07/2020 16:41

I wonder;

Yet they're confidently investing in Germany. You'd think if they were so confident about Brexit they'd invest it in the UK.

Funny how they've chosen an EU country...

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 18:00

Yet they're confidently investing in Germany.

JCB Germany is an established company founded in 1965.

Lufthansa staff not so lucky;
"German airline Lufthansa plans to cut 22,000 jobs"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-53007048

You'd think if they were so confident about Brexit they'd invest it in the UK.

They did;
16 January 2019
"Construction work on the new £50 million JCB Cab Systems factory is forging ahead as it targets a summer opening." ...
The investment, one of the biggest in the company’s history"^ ...

Clavinova · 25/07/2020 18:18

gearing up to blame Covid for Brexit mucking everything up.

Odd that Covid keeps cropping up;

"German automaker BMW has confirmed it will cut roughly 6,000 jobs in Germany in an effort to cut costs as the automotive sector continues to struggle to recover from the Covid-19 outbreak."

industryeurope.com/sectors/automotive-maritime-transport/bmw-to-cut-6-000-jobs-in-germany-to-save-costs/

HannibalHayes · 25/07/2020 19:39

Yes. It makes perfect sense to cut us off from all our trading partners while we're suffering from the worst economic downturn from presumably since just before we joined the EEC due to Covid.

Genius...

Clavinova · 26/07/2020 10:16

Personally I think there will be a trade deal by the end of the year - even if it's just a skeleton deal.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 26/07/2020 12:24

I agree that we will get a bare bones deal, Boris will use it to boast that the EU capitulated and hail Brexit a huge success. People like Clav will lap it up whilst the rest of us non-partisans will be able to see that the deal is only slightly less shit than no deal.

ListeningQuietly · 26/07/2020 12:36

What is a skeleton deal
please explain?
