Coronavirus poses a particularly Irish shaped question. How the UK responds to Irish plans for ending lockdown and whether Arlene continues to back an all Ireland plan will be fascinating to watch and see justified regardless of which way we go.

The UK for all its new found independence is looking very closely to the success / failure of EU strategies before making our own plan public. Mainly because we've yet to write one.

Johnson hasn't led much. He's delegated. Yet he gets all the praise for doing the sum total of fuck all and never being the bad guy. There always another fall guy to blame.

Economically we are stuffed and promises of a very quick bounce back don't look likely based on public confidence and willingness to return to places like pubs restaurants and shops.

Our ability to adapt to new conditions at short notice has been tested and businesses can not afford to do this again soon.

This is the background to which we go into talks. Both sides need an extension to serve their best interests. Johnson is determined to cut our nose of to spite our face for the sake of his legacy and to keep those paying the back handers and dodging tax happy.

It will be a test 'done' on the way to Johnson's 200k a day (or was that 250k a day)

Actually, I think it was 350 million a week ?

mrslaughan · 06/05/2020 13:53

I have wondered what the key words Claranova search to decide which threads she's going to park herself of a thread. Or does she get told every day? It's fascinating as she's hasn't been around much lately..... (I am not complaining).

Yes I figured he was under surveillance - but it's interesting that they leaked it...... so are we going to do a trump?

We have flown passed our target of 20k so who the guck cares if it's 200k that die?

I will have a real quandary if they decide to send schools back......

Er, I was getting bored of Brexit - not much happening.Thought I would see what you were getting up to occasionally. Grin

You'r slipping Clavinova - at least a page of A4 cut and pasted is required! Grin

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/05/2020 14:10

Choux supposedly a courier will come collect it and I will get the result.

I'm going to do it, I always take part in public health exercises, but I have no faith in the results and won't adjust behaviours if I get a negative. I'll continue to semi isolate (click and collect at the very most, I've not been in a shop other than the farm shop - strictly two customers, but it's usually empty - since before schools closed) until ... Well, I don't know when really.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/05/2020 14:17

So you have to swab - deep - inside your nose and throat ?

I wonder how many people can do that properly

If it's a study, then samples should be taken by trained professionals;
most studies in fact use blood samples, less unreliable than swab tests

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 14:19

So you have to swab - deep - inside your nose and throat ? [] I wonder how many people can do that properly

My brain didn't get far enough to ask that question, since my first thought was "would this support under or over reporting ?" and stopped there.

Deep throat, eh ? The mind boggles.

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 14:21

I'm genuinely confused over why you're taking such a pissy tone with me, Emilyonmoore. I'm far from saying the NHSx app is unique or even good idea, but right now it's the only implementation of contact testing that our government has on the table. (Unless you know about a South Korean style mobile tracing solution, or one of the Apple/Google API based ones used by Germany and Italy piloting somewhere in the UK?) Therefore, I am interested in really scrutinising it, from all angles, and understanding WHY NHSx and several other depts have managed to convince themselves it will work and our data will be safe. If it doesn't work and people avoid it because they are not convinced by the data argument, we are all deep in the shit and no amount of spin OR bitching about the spin will help.

borntobequiet · 06/05/2020 14:26

My first thought was that Ferguson was being deliberately discredited/set up as fall guy with a view to easing lockdown prematurely. Then I heard it was the Torygraph and knew I was right.
They had some bloody T’graph journo on the Today prog who actually said “the proof is in the pudding” (idiot) as well as describing him as the architect of lockdown. Happily David Aaronovich said that was nonsense, he advised, Govt made policy.

ListeningQuietly · 06/05/2020 14:33

Article in the Economist about the App and the Apple / Google tie up
pretty much telling its readers not to download anything with Cummings finger prints on it

What works in Singapore and Hong Kong and Korea is unlikely to work in the UK for multiple reasons that others have published in respected journals and magazines.

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 14:34

but right now it's the only implementation of contact testing that our government has on the table.

That's not an encouragement at all - just (another) damning indictment on this shower of shits.

Sorry, even if the only dish on the menu is a dog shit souffle, then I won't be eating.

Therefore, I am interested in really scrutinising it, from all angles, and understanding WHY NHSx and several other depts have managed to convince themselves it will work and our data will be safe.

Because they'll lose their jobs if they don't.

If it doesn't work and people avoid it because they are not convinced by the data argument, we are all deep in the shit

Which a competent government would have foreseen and accounted for. But (again) not this bunch of clowns.

I reckon we are the US' canary. The UK is going to be used to back Trumps agenda.

I'm idly wondering if you could actually lay the COVID dead head to to and cross the Atlantic on them ? 6000 km - average height of (say) 1.7m ? No, we need some more dead yet.

Maybe if we added US dead to UK dead we could do it ?

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 14:37

^Article in the Economist about the App and the Apple / Google tie up

I didn't need to get that far. It's a UK government IT project and automatically crap. insecure, and liable to data loss.

Presumably I am the only one who hasn't been visited by a nice man in black and told to forget about the EU Exit "app" ?

Hang on, doorbells going BRB ...

Clavinova · 06/05/2020 14:39

You'r slipping Clavinova - at least a page of A4 cut and pasted is required!

To be fair - I am 'co-writing' a history essay today with ds2, aged 11. Don't tell his history teacher. Wink

Anyone catch the Emergency Comedy Broadcast "Who said that" ?

Anyway, one of the questions was "What would you tweet to alert your followers you have been kidnapped ?"

I reckon a Clav post without 2 pages of c'n'p might be a similar silent alert. Do the authorities need to be contacted ?

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 15:34

Who likes science ?!

www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01063-8

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 15:45

More science ... I read a suggestion that one of the factors that makes Covid so lethal to a small subset of people is the adult expression or otherwise of fetal haemoglobin or one of several other odd haemoglobin abnormalities that get favoured in populations that originate from (previously) malaria countries.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7534152/

The high oxygen demand of the virus causes the body to adjust as if for a high altitude making the blood thicker and harder to pump. Low blood oxygenation also damages oxygen hungry critical organs. Covid toe being the latest slightly weird symptom somewhat like chilblains/frostbite.

boatyardblues · 06/05/2020 16:00

Or - given the story was broken in the telegraph- was this a story leaked , to discredit him and therefore his science.

I was assuming that Petronella’s phone rang off the hook with journos looking for leads after she dangled that carrot about philandering cabinet ministers & lockdown. She either dropped enough hints or the papers started surveilling key figures.

I won’t be downloading that app, that’s for sure. And I’m pretty civic minded.

DGRossetti · 06/05/2020 16:07

She either dropped enough hints or the papers started surveilling key figures.

You would have thought they'd stand out a mile Grin

If I were in government, I'd want a weather eye kept on all key figures that inform government policy. And I'm as wishy washy liberal as you can get, so it's impossible to believe a bunch of paranoid tossers like the current incumbents aren't. They are certainly going to closely watch each other, because that's what happens in tinpot dictatorships like the UK.

I won’t be downloading that app, that’s for sure. And I’m pretty civic minded.

Has anyone from the dream team rocked up to the podium and waved their iShiny about to encourage the Great Unwashed to follow suit ?

No ?

Speaks volumes really.

yoikes · 06/05/2020 17:16

They can get to fuck
I won't be downloading it either!

ListeningQuietly · 06/05/2020 17:17

If Lockdown is not ended with Social Distancing in workplaces cut to 1m
the job loss lists will be into six figures by the end of next week
as Sunak has said that he cannot afford to extend Furlough
so redundancy consultations have to start by next Thursday to be complete by June 30th

alternatively companies will just go into administration
(as a high profile business near me did this afternoon)

yoikes · 06/05/2020 17:17

Re: schools: one proposal seems to be that years 6 10 and 12 go back.
My dc are in those groups.
For their MH they need to go back.
It's a tricky one.
