Westministenders: Crisis, which crisis ?

Main crises facing the government:

. Negotiating a Brexit deal with the EU
. Coronoavirus
. Floods
. Allegations of some ministers - and Cummings - bullying civil servants
. More trouble threatened from Turkey / Syria

Unfortunately with all these parallel crises, we have a workshy lying arse as PM
and the worst collection yet of incompetents in Cabinet
who seem to have decided on a strategy of bullying their civil servants to avoid hearing any facts that don't fit with current Tory party ideology

S Korea was unlucky .... but their response has been impressive
Look at that Reuters link, the bit about patient 31
total fail of their system letting that person leave the medical situation

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/mar/03/top-civil-servant-begins-legal-case-against-priti-patel-and-home-office

Sir Philip Rutnam, the senior civil servant who resigned on Saturday claiming he was bullied and forced from office, has begun legal action against the government over his treatment by Priti Patel,
his union has told the Guardian.

Legal documents name the home secretary, the Home Office and the Cabinet Office as respondents, the FDA said.

It would mean that Patel will be expected to give evidence under oath if the case comes to tribunal.
......
Patel, who was international development secretary from July 2016 until November 2017, has been beset by a raft of reports
alleging she bullied and belittled officials at both the Home Office and the Department for International Development, where she reportedly openly described staff as “fucking useless”.

In claims reported by the BBC,
the embattled minister was accused of shouting at a former work and pensions aide with “unprovoked aggression"

Yes - but all countries have fucked up, S Korea were hugely unlucky re the consequences of that fuck up. And it's partly because they've been effective at contact tracing that we know what the consequences are.

Elsewhere we don't know the extent of the fuck ups yet, because countries aren't tracing and testing enough.

Mistigri · 03/03/2020 20:59

For eg it's looking like there have been massive fuck ups in Washington State and Northern France - but lack of testing capacity means no one knows how big.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2020 21:40

France - and other European countries - have the advantage that their campaign against Coronaviros is not being run by a science-denier

Mike Pence could be what is needed to turn a crisis into a full-blown disaster for the USA
Depends how much he can get in the way of the public health professionals

Mistigri · 03/03/2020 21:45

Tbh BCF I'm not impressed by how it's being handled in France. Very behind the curve on testing.

The health system here is excellent but it's very fragmented with lots of providers. I think a centralised NHS style system will do better at testing, epidemiology and containment. (But I'd still rather be treated in a French hospital if I get it.)

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2020 23:34

Germany seems to have handled it well so far, despite also having both state and several private providers

I'm definitely not impressed by how Trump is handling it, now palming it off onto the science denier
Also, some people not being able to afford healthcare could bite them all in the bum
That guy being billed for ancillary services during his quarantine will have alarmed many

Agree wrt the fear of treatment resulting in ruin in the US, and the consequences of that. This is going to cause more problems than Mike Pence at the helm. Hoping the campaign of Bernie Sanders will make more sense to millions more people when the reality of the for profit model of healthcare delivery reveals its shortcomings.

Mistigri · 04/03/2020 06:42

Another day, another bullying allegation against Patel.

yoikes · 04/03/2020 07:56

I made that point about us health care to ds1 last night.
After the past 4 years maybe it will be this virus that brings trump down???
I still can't fathom how he will be able to campaign for November elections...he can barely stand or formulate words/sentances now...

@Clavinova, you're a disgrace

Mistigri · 04/03/2020 09:23

Just report racist posts, don't respond to them.

Peregrina · 04/03/2020 09:25

I have reported this post.

Clavinova · 04/03/2020 09:25

PeninsulaPanic
you're a disgrace

I don't see why - I copied the passage (Carole Cadwalladr) from DGRossetti's post yesterday.

PeninsulaPanic · 04/03/2020 09:29

Thanks @Mistigri, knee jerk reaction and then I reported it. This will be the last time I ever reference one of that user's posts, but FWIW, it wasn't the quote from Cadwalladr I was reacting to, it was the nastiness that followed it Angry

Peregrina · 04/03/2020 09:31

My reporting too was about Clavinova's link - not Cadwalladr's post - that's already out in the public domain for people to read about Brexit issues.

Clavinova · 04/03/2020 09:32

I wasn't meaning to be 'nasty' at all - what was Carole Cadwalladr's intention?

Peregrina · 04/03/2020 09:34

I am quite sure you knew exactly what you were doing Clavinova - it was not Cadwalladr's post that has caused us to report your post, as I am sure you are aware.

Mistigri · 04/03/2020 09:37

S/he has form and this isn't the only thread with a racist post from the same person in the last 12 hours.

PeninsulaPanic · 04/03/2020 09:37

Thanks for taking action @Peregrina.

I don't know much, but I do know many Welsh people have Polish heritage, for example, because of the supportive role many Polish soldiers (and eventually their families) played in rebuilding after WWII.

Mistigri · 04/03/2020 09:41

Using colour to define Welshness is racist. End of story.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 09:43

Just report racists
then scroll on by 🎶🎵🎵🎶

PeninsulaPanic · 04/03/2020 09:45

Absolutely @Mistigri. Maybe my previous post came across as 'trying to justify' my taking exception to the offending poster, when no justification is needed, for the reason you stated.
