Brexit Arms - Out with the old and in with the new

It’s time again for another Brexit Arms thread to see us into Christmas and beyond.

Well what a week it’s been!!

Boris has now completed his first week and he’s been busy. New conservatives have been sworn in, the Queens Speech yesterday shows promise (aware that the proof of the (Xmas) pudding is in the eating) and Boris’ Deal is going to be voted on today with the results being around 3pm I believe.

Meanwhile, on the other side all four wheels have definitely fallen off the red bus and were very nearly joined by a garden gate and a car door. Oh dear!!

Anyway, I have added a few more Christmas decs to the pub and popped the fairy back on the tree (it took a nasty tumble)

We are now good to go.
Cheers all 🍷🍷

Ps. If anyone wants to volunteer for outside catering that would be👍🏻

Just finished my piano practise
What are you playing?
I’ve been practising some duets to play with my daughter at Christmas.

Songsofexperience · 22/12/2019 17:37

We won, we won, we won... It doesn't matter...

Things will improve when the other side understands what exactly has been "won". The point is, you need to come to terms with the fact that half the population does not see it at all and is convinced we are in fact losing as a country. The vision isn't shared. It's not likely to improve until good trade deals have been agreed and until it's clear that workers rights are protected. If they're not, expect more antagonism.

yolofish · 22/12/2019 17:44

YES songs absolutely. I don't want to argue with anyone really, but it is so true that while 'you lot' are delighted you have won, there are so many people who don't understand what it is you have 'won' and are anxious about their future and that of their children.

I'd really love if Johnson could actually find a way that does bring us all together and enable us to see a clear and successful future, but I'm doubtful that's going to happen, because I think we are so much more divided now than ever before.

Anyway, I'll have a large Wine please , and need to go get ready for Christma Pub Quiz!

AutumnRose1 · 22/12/2019 17:50

yolo “there are so many people who don't understand what it is you have 'won' and are anxious about their future and that of their children“

Which is how a lot of people felt about Europe and the ever closer union. There are going to be times when people just have to agree to disagree.

howabout · 22/12/2019 18:06

Dapple proper technical grade 5 stuff before DD3 catches up with me. I'm competent enough but very rusty.

Violin is my first instrument. It's a real luxury to be able to dig it out of its case after months and still be able to play anything I like. Makes the piano even more of an effort though.

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 22/12/2019 18:28

Yes autumn. That's how I felt about the eu and ever closer Union.. But songs and yolo that comment was in response to people talking at me and assuming I felt and thought the same way they did.

Songsofexperience · 22/12/2019 18:34

that comment was in response to people talking at me and assuming I felt and thought the same way they did.

True, that assumption is wrong both ways but a lot of people fall into that trap...

howabout · 22/12/2019 18:45

It's not likely to improve until good trade deals have been agreed and until it's clear that workers rights are protected. If they're not, expect more antagonism.

Agreed. However none of the building for the future necessary has been done for the past 3 years because of endless attempts to reverse the decision. Hence the frustration and the growing chasm.

On worker's rights but even trade deals post Brexit if the UK collectively doesn't like the direction of travel it can vote differently.

The problem for the "Anyone but Boris" is to move on from declaring the EU to be the Universal panacea.

DustyDiamond · 22/12/2019 18:58

For me, 'we won' at this point means we 'won the battle' for democracy to be respected - that is, the pitched battle that has been fought since the ref to try & overturn it
Not at all a sense of 'we won!' in a gloating way

The relief & joy that I felt when a majority Parliament was returned, and the interminable row about whether or not we actually leave the EU was finally put to bed, cannot be overstated

Obvs there's now further wranglings to come re the final shape of Brexit, but that's what Parliament should have been doing for the last 4 years but instead they utterly wasted time & energy on re-fighting 2016

The minority govt of TM should have been seized upon by opposition parties to shape Brexit rather than merely seek to subvert, but they did not.
Now it's a purely Tory/BJ Brexit which is what was all but forced by the dicking around of MPs up until the recent GE

Opposition parties have only themselves to blame for that imo

My annoyance & anger was only ever directed at MPs & high profile, high in various forms of capital, democracy-interferers (such as Jo Maugham & Gina Miller) - never ever at the Remain voters themselves
(Obvs was pissed off with those remainers who were nasty, abusive, sneering twats though - of which leave supporters seem to attract like flies 🤷🏻‍♀️)

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 22/12/2019 19:41

Not me though songs.

I've never talked to anyone and said '' bloody awful these anti democratic mind benders hijacking our parliament, wanting to be stuck in scary eu... Giving up their votes '' etc

And I've had years of it I don't know many declared at least leavers in real life.

This has been my only leave outlet.

Right now I feel we won... Feels like a triumph of common sense over utter madness.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 22/12/2019 21:16

True, that assumption is wrong both ways but a lot of people fall into that trap

Absolutely, my friend didnt enjoy her day at work the following day, staggered shift so she got it three separate times Grin

How is everyone? Looking forward to Christmas and the 31st Grin

scaryteacher · 22/12/2019 22:20

Have to go to the NL before the 31/01 to pick up dh's retirement present to himself and drive it back. Why he has to buy a very retro British sports car from a seller in the NL, god knows!

scaryteacher · 22/12/2019 22:23

...and I'll have to do the HRMC (NOVA to prove VAT has been paid, on a 51 year old car, I bloody hope so), and the DVLA V55/5 dance to get it back on Brit plates. Grr. I might just make dh do it this time!

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 06:56

You'll be a veteran at this sort of thing now, Scary. I see a business opportunity here...NOVAs and V55/5s 4U...Smile

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 07:00

Morning, all,

It's cold out there but here in the Arms, the fire is crackling and the complimentary breakfast tray awaits. Today's theme is Italian (prima colazione) with caffè latte, espresso, pancetta panini, biscotti and cioccolato.
Please help yourselves.

Just two sleeps before the big day. Have you ever wondered just how Santa decides who's been naughty and who's been nice? He's clearly susceptible to the same influence as the rest of us...

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Morning! Another day of actual political movement, rather than utterly pointless time wasting attempts to frustrate brexit.

@DustyDiamond agree with you as always. The faux 'belief' that remainers peddled about the country not knowing what it wanted or had changed its mind has now been proven to be lies.

We knew brexit was right, we voted for it, and still want it!

They are the ones who caused 3 years of stagnation.

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 08:17

Morning, Boswell. We've been stuck in the quagmire for so long not only because the democracy-deniers were so hard at work here trying to discredit our vote by smearing us, but they were hard at work in Brussels too; Blair, Mandelson, Letwin, Benn, Starmer, Cooper, Major, Cable, Swinson and their fellow travellers assuring the EU it would just take "one more push" to stop Brexit. These fools thought their opinions overrode our votes and the fools in Brussels thought these people were still regarded as serious political heavyweights in the UK.

Well they all know better now. Brexit will happen. And there's a word for those who actively seek to undermine their country's best interests by going behind its back.

Now that the political truth has been settled once and for all, there's only hard economic reality to deal with. I expect the political leaders of the EU - the ones whose jobs depend on the votes of people with jobs at risk - to start being rather more accommodating, in the interests of all.

time4chocolate · 23/12/2019 08:31

Morning all Brew

Thanks as always Singing.

I suspect it may be a quiet news day today but if anyone’s interested Johnny B is doing the Channel 4 alternative Christmas message (you might want to pop a Rennie beforehand if you are planning to tune into thatWink). Personally I will probably give it a swerve Xmas Wink.

DustyDiamond · 23/12/2019 08:45

Morning all! Brew

After completely skiving all chores yesterday for the simple reason that I just couldn't be arsed, I have already this morning cleaned the bathroom & fixed the upstairs toilet seat ✊🙌

Having a quick coffee then getting my bedroom, landing & stairs hoovered & dusted
Kids have been repeatedly asked/ordered to do their rooms but deaf ears thus far 🙄

Have adopted a 'broken windows' philosophy to downstairs now & hoping it continues to hold fast (any 'stuff' no matter how small is not permitted to be left out because small leads to CRAMMED FULL OF SHIT very quickly...!)

Think I'll be giving Big Bad John a swerve wrt his Xmas message as my nerves can't take him 😩

In other news - it appears the fear is real that we (leave supporters) are a bunch of Manchurian Candidates 😱
Apparently, when the bells toll on 31st Jan to signal Brexit, we will be triggered into causing mass unrest, generalised civil disobedience & murderous massacre on the grandest of scales...
(Kristallnacht & St Bartholomew's Day were specifically cited as analogous possibilities - I shit you not 🙄🙄)

Anyhoo, haterz gonna hate etc
2 days til 🎅🏻 🙌🙌🍷

Saucery · 23/12/2019 09:13

Morning! Just popping in for a livener before going to collect Christmas food order.
I don’t think ringing Big Ben on the 31st is a terribly good idea. It could well spark off nutjobs to do stupid things and just add to the fervour. It’s a set of trade deals and agreements, after all, not the end of a war or NYE.

Anyway, bugger Sally, pray for me, I’m going in! 😱🙏

Wishing everyone in the Arms a peaceful and lovely Christmas 🎄

MamaMary · 23/12/2019 09:13

Morning everyone!

Who mentioned Kristallnacht Dusty? Shock

I have to admit I was shocked when I went on the Westminsters thread and saw the Arms being described as a hotbed of racism. Such uncalled for and unwarranted nastiness.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 23/12/2019 09:14

Sometimes i feel like I’m chatting to myself Grin

Nobody looking forward to Christmas and the 31st then

I prefer Christmas eve myself

Saucery · 23/12/2019 09:18

It’s the anticipation on Christmas Eve, isn’t it, Rufus. Plus the peace, the excitement of young children etc. Love it!

SingingLily · 23/12/2019 09:21

Apparently, when the bells toll on 31st Jan to signal Brexit, we will be triggered into causing mass unrest, generalised civil disobedience & murderous massacre on the grandest of scales...

Oh dear, they really don't understand us at all, do they? That's just your average Saturday night out in my little village. Famous for it, we are.

In this household, we'll be too busy dancing round the kitchen, beaming from ear to ear, watching next door's fireworks and finally opening the champagne that's been waiting in the fridge all this time for Independence Day. Can't stand the stuff, by the way, but my sister gave it to me and I don't like waste.

You're further ahead with your Christmas cleaning than I am, Dusty! Just off now to pick up the turkey (which I also can't stand but I was outvoted...and that's democracy).

DustyDiamond · 23/12/2019 09:22

Lol Rufus - I'm buzzing in & out sporadically & being a bit of a dick not interacting properly 😳

Too much other distractions going on...!

Xmas Eve Eve the kids always drag their mattresses down & sleep in the living room - always watch Die Hard & get a takeaway.
They're 14 & 17 now but said they're still doing it tonight 😍

Xmas Eve is Xmas jammies & general dicking around then it's usually just me up watching shit TV til they're asleep & I morph into 🎅🏻

We're going out for Xmas dinner (have done this for last few years since me & their dad separated) so I get a full 2 to 3 hour captive audience with them which I love 🥰

No idea yet about New Year - will play it by ear....

Are you all set?!
