Westminstenders: Penny dropping time

RedToothBrush · 17/12/2019 08:12

Johnson already seems to be hinting at protections for workers rights and the environment that he promised are to be dropped.

Along with enshrining Brexit in law to the end of Dec 2020 thus creating another Brexit no deal date. This time without any safety net in parliament.

"won't Johnson be more liberal than he suggested" they cry

About that...

Before Obama, Every US President had a surname that was English, Scots, Irish or Dutch.

HesterThrale · 18/12/2019 18:14

G Verhofstadt says Citizens can never become the victims of Brexit.
I have extraordinary sympathy for the difficulties of EU in the U.K, and U.K. in the EU, but what of the other forgotten citizens? U.K. in the U.K.

It’s often forgotten that British people are having their EU citizenship ripped away, often against their will. I’m proud to be British but also feel strongly European.
I’m devastated to lose that citizenship, and that my DC will probably be unable to study/work in the EU.

What other government has removed people’s citizenship rights in such a thoughtless way, as if it doesn’t matter?

Jo Maugham has started a petition requesting associate citizenship. Unlikely but worth a try.

From the Scot John Buchan:

“The true definition of a snob is one who craves for what separates men rather than for what unites them.”

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 18:27

hester The problems that expats may face, having made life decisions many years ago,
assuming rights in their chosen host country which are then removed by Brexit
are a whole order of magnitude worse than shutting off future plans

In fact, many EU countries are actively encouraging young fit workers with appropriate skills from non-EU countries - which the Uk will become - and I expect reasonably well-off UK pensioners would also be welcome

Some Uk in UK people, especially those who aren't well-off / not professionals in demand / do have pre-existing health conditions,
will have opportunities removed

  • I won't minimise that

but Brexit is not a comparable threat to their current life,
except of course to those whose jobs or businesses are affected - but the EP can't help that.

I agree, it’s absolutely gutting.

When Greenland left the EU the country was given the option for citizens to retain EU citizenship.

DGRossetti · 18/12/2019 18:47

When Greenland left the EU the country was given the option for citizens to retain EU citizenship.

I can't see Boris "allowing" that. There's a lot of spite in Brexit.

CrissmussMockers · 18/12/2019 18:50

If we retain our EU citizenship we shall have the ECHR to protect our rights. Unlikely.

HesterThrale · 18/12/2019 18:51

Bigchoc I would never minimise the plight of ‘expats’; it’s disgraceful and shocking how they’ve been treated. They are being wronged and there are no words to adequately capture this.
But many people British who live in the U.K. also feel very depressed about losing their citizenship. It is another injustice.

placemats · 18/12/2019 18:53

Whether Johnson 'allows' it or not is moot.

It will be on the table as part of the deal from the EU's end.

And I think for Johnson to not give the option would be a political gaffe, though he is used to those.

I refuse to call the PM by his preferred first name.

placemats · 18/12/2019 18:54

The ECHR has nothing to do with the EU. It's a separate entity.

CrissmussMockers · 18/12/2019 18:55

SSSSSSSSSSSSSH! Don't tell them!!!!

Tanith · 18/12/2019 19:00

I am afraid that anyone signing up to request EU citizenship will be regarded as traitors.

TatianaLarina · 18/12/2019 19:03

I couldn’t give a fuck. However I just don’t think Maugham will succeed.

TatianaLarina · 18/12/2019 19:09

Talking of patriotism - I notice Dusty Diamond never came back to defend her opening post on Brexit Arms thread. With all its nationalist triumphalism.

WeshMaGueule · 18/12/2019 19:29

Sandi Toksvig annoys me. She was privately educated. That's not "no money".

You called 🙄

I have no need to 'defend' anything to you

If it offends you, I don't care.
It's that simple.

HesterThrale · 18/12/2019 19:43

Aah, Guy Verhofstadt has mentioned the UK citizens who want to keep their EU citizenship:

The EU member states should grant UK citizens living in Europe the full rights as they have today. Automatically. No ‘ifs and buts’ here either.
Let's also come back to the idea of ‘European associated citizenship’ for UK citizens who want to keep their link with Europe.

Probably an impossible dream, but worth fighting for - it would mean a lot to many people.

Obama made a good joke when in Ireland about having Irish descent

Oh for the days when a POTUS was an intelligent person with a genuine sense of humour.

TatianaLarina · 18/12/2019 19:52

If it offends you, I don't care

I know. That’s rather the point.

TatianaLarina · 18/12/2019 19:53

Re: EU - associate membership would be fabulous but I can’t see it working.

Microdot · 18/12/2019 19:57

If it offends you, I don't care. It's that simple.

And yet 'cares' so very much about any perceived offence against them, to the point of blind rage.

DustyDiamond · 18/12/2019 19:57

Yes, it is.

I could not care less what you post in here, it is none of my business.

Plenty of generalisations made about leave voters & Tory voters on this thread 'offend' me but I'm sure those posters who make those offensive generalisations don't care about my being offended by them.

Similarly, I do not care what you think of me or my posts. I do not care if I 'offend' you.

What I do care about though is blatant lies.
Lies & misrepresentations about me & other people.

That is what I took issue with this morning: the lies.
Nothing more, nothing less.

DustyDiamond · 18/12/2019 19:59

to the point of blind rage.

😂😂😂

It takes much, much more than words on a screen to send me into 'blind rage'

Don't flatter yourself hun 😂
