New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Jeremy Thorpe had a hovercraft.

(Too many emmets on the roads in N.Cornwall)

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:49

surprised that there is no, none, zero mention of Brexit on the leaflet

I'm not ...

I think Labour started on exactly the right foot, and that Brexit is not going to be the defining issue of this election. Which suits Tories and Labour just fine.

Of course it's not what the BXP want, as they can only really campaign on that. And they need to choose whether it's Tory Brexit they are against, or Labour Brexit.

But "Brexit Fatigue" is a thing.

I can't be arsed to invent some metrics, but a following of the threads on MN in AIBU/Chat about this election will probably bear me out. I'd guess NHS will be mentioned far more than Brexit ....

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:51

Jo Swinson's bus is nowt compared to Nicola Sturgeon's whirlybird during IndyRef 1 - now that was wannabe Presidential ;)

I think Swinson might be better off on a unicorn.

FishesaPlenty · 06/11/2019 16:51

Is it supposed to be a good look for Boris Johnson that he's about two sizes too fat for his suits?
It's the shirt-tails always hanging out that gets me. Does the twat not know how to keep himself dressed? Maybe he's meant to remind the older generation everyone of Just William.

Alsohuman · 06/11/2019 16:59

A bit of light relief.

On the first day of the election, my true love sent to me:

A minister resigning
Another saying sorry
Chairman hides from Burley
Videos getting doctored
5 gaffs a day
Hide the stuff on Russia
Ads get banned
Can’t use Treasury
It’s a great start to the Tory’s GE.

Ellie56 · 06/11/2019 17:00

Johnson always looks scruffy to me. You'd think with all his money he could afford some suits that fit properly, some new shirts and a decent haircut.

Lately his hair looks as if Carrie has plonked a bowl on his head and chopped round it. Hmm

How many more ‘gaffes’ do you think it will take before people realise that the Tories just have shit policies and most of their MPs haven’t spoken to a voter in decades?

Not even the best campaign in the world could change that 💁‍♀️

prettybird · 06/11/2019 17:02

Was the helicopter branded with Nicola's name? (....who btw wasn't the leader during the Indyref campaignConfused).

I have no issue with an election battlebus (or even a helicopter if that's needed to get quickly around a large geography Wink) for the LibDems - I just think Jo Swinson been badly advised in personalising it the way she has done.

It's not "her" LibDem Party Confused She is the leader of the Party but that can change.

Emilyontmoor · 06/11/2019 17:04

Does the twat not know how to keep himself dressed? Oh but he does, he’s been doing the endearing bumbling upper class eccentric schtick all his life. It worked for him as Mayor of London, and his party members mistake it for charisma. He apparently messes his hair up before he appears in public, and probably pulls out his shirt tales too. The surprise would be if he had ever appeared looking dignified and statesmanlike. It distracts from the fact that he is not in fact a statesman or talented politician. A sort of double bluff.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 06/11/2019 17:05

She is the leader of the Party but that can change.

Especially if she loses her seat Grin Grin

dreichwinter · 06/11/2019 17:08

I have family members in her seat who say that Jo Swinson is a decent local MP.
( I don't think that the bus is a good look. I'm surprised she didn't remember some Labour gaffes in the presidential direction and say no thanks)

And when was Bozo in Uxbridge long enough to be photographed outside Hillingdon Hospital? Or is that leaflet just clever photoshopping?

Does the twat not know how to keep himself dressed?

He has a problem keeping his Johnson in his trousers, certainly. Which might explain why he has this permanent look of someone sneaking out the window as the husband gets home.

I can't help but feel there is yet a Boris scandal lurking somewhere. Probably to do with the opposite sex, but you never know.

Politicians who dismiss their security escort are rarely doing charity work in Kings Cross ...

squid4 · 06/11/2019 17:14

hey,

I was one of the sole voices a few weeks back saying that despite the huge poll lead I was so sceptical of the tories running a decent election campaign,
the media kept repeated Boris was an amazing campaigner... but is he?
He believes his own press, he's lazy
labour didn't surge this early in 2017 I don't think
they have everything to sell, tories have no policies, just money and the media - though that may be enough

Fighting this is better than passively accepting the shit (and possibly imaginary ) polls being reported. I'm glad we didn't drag the election into next year anyway

excited about the labour manifesto it's going to be excellent.

Heading into another NHS winter at work (actually it's pretty mjuch winter all year round now - like narnia!!) and need some hope I guess.

sovielverloren · 06/11/2019 17:19

I'm a bit behind but just wanted to reply re the "Swinson bus". It drove past me in Vauxhall this morning. I have been waiting all day at work to get on the train tonight to check what you knowledgeable lot knew about it! It doesn't feel very...British somehow.

Feels like the marketing department may have got this wrong Grin

ARoomWithoutADoor · 06/11/2019 17:23

And she was First Minister and Leader of the SNP when it was landed in the Borders during the campaign as I watched her then do a (Presidential) meet n greet and then whizz off for her next stop ;)

BestIsWest · 06/11/2019 17:24

So how exactly does anyone set up a podium in Downing Street? Because when I was there the other month the only way in was through armed police guarded railings.

Boris Johnson on election campaign collision-course with Brussels over new EU commissioner

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-brexit-general-election-eu-commissioner-julian-king-latest-a9188081.html

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 17:24

Things that make this election ... unprecedented (and thus one to be very wary of calling ...). In no particular order

  1. In winter
  2. Decline of print newspaper circulation
  3. Rise of non print media
  4. Leave/Remain splits complex mapping to party political support
  5. Spectacularly incompetent (although not so unprecedented) incumbent performance
  6. Rise of smaller parties
  7. New paradigm of local/national balance in reporting

Anymore for anymore.

I've left bots and targeted advertising out as separate issues - they're really part of (3) and I have some doubts about how effective they are. Especially given how pisspoor some online marketing I've seen which was open and funded turned out.

Still waiting for someone, somewhere to be brave enough and actually put a number on the seats each party can expect, as opposed to a parade of lottery suggestions.
