New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Maybe we are hitting peak-commie-corbyn?

Let’s hope so, it’s beyond tedious. The Tories’ Russian funding will hopefully put a bit of a dent in that. Hardline Tories have no answer to that.

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:05

I'm telling you...they are trying to throw it

The probably couldn't even do that ...

(You had one job ...)

prettybird · 06/11/2019 16:06

Just watching BJ's Downing Street address (hadn't seen it until now and had only read snippets).

I'd say he came bloody close to actually did breaching purdah by using his prime ministerial office to campaign for the Conservative Party Angry as no-one else can use the podium in Downing Street.

Just as well he made such a fuck up of it Wink

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:08

I'm going to hold my hands up here and admit that I was one of the posters who thought the tories would run a very slick election campaign and it would all be over.

Saatchi and Saatchi (sp?) seem a distant memory now.

Hoooo · 06/11/2019 16:09

True dg

Only the tories could win by accident....

I feel like I am moving away from Corbyn being the best of a bad bunch to actually...I do like a lot of the policies here. I do think he has principles, and whilst he is clearly conflicted about the EU I do think he takes a considered approach.

I've always been very on the fence with him (something I've criticised in the man himself often enough!) but if he does manage to form a government, I think I would be pleased for reasons beyond just getting the tories out.

Having said that, the best chance of getting Labour in may well still be to vote tactically to keep the tories out...

tobee · 06/11/2019 16:15

Call me out if this is fanciful, but at a time when politics in this country is said to be being over taken by extremists, that Swinson and Johnson seem to be divisive and Corbyn more centristShock. Or maybe I'm just seeing this through a Brexit lens?

prettybird · 06/11/2019 16:17

Had to check for myself, but the Lib Dem battlebus really does say "Jo Swinson's Liberal Democrats" ShockHmm

Ironic that we've got Corbyn - an EU sceptic at heart, but willing to push the party line for Remain; versus Boris - an EU champion at heart - but willing to push the party line for Brexit.

But there any comparison stops, because Boris actions are purely for the best for Boris, whereas Corbyn seems much more about what best for the country.

A vote for the Brexit Party could let Corbyn win. And that means no Brexit

As I understand the Labour position "No Brexit" would only come about after a second referendum. So the Conservative in that leaflet are being disingenuous at best, and deceitful as always

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:24

That picture could have been taken in Chicago. Or Dallas. Or Newark.

Hooray, Nick Timothy didn't get the Meriden seat !

Mark Wallace@wallaceme

BREAKING:
Meriden selection result:

@bhatti_saqib selected as the new Conservative candidate.
Nick Timothy came second.

Heh heh

I'm told Sir Mark Sedwill made the decision to block the publication of HMT costings of Labour policies this afternoon
after a lengthy conversation Sir Tom Scholar

Comes after John McDonnell raised concerns in call with Scholar

Javid understood to be furious about it

HesterThrale · 06/11/2019 16:39

And back in the real world of real people trying to cope with the uncertainty of the eternal Brexit omnishambles...

Food & Drink Federation industry confidence survey
- Over 25% of members have spent over £100k on no deal prep
- 62% of businesses are dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied with government guidance and info ahead of Brexit
- Net confidence has declined by 20% since Q1 2018

What a needless waste of money.

Following the all-exclusive=none-included equation upthread, maybe HMT could publish costings of all parties policies. Seems fair to me.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 06/11/2019 16:40

Loving the 'God doesn't have a Jo Swinson complex' joke.

I have previously made reference to the JRM-alike I used to work for / now know again.
His remark about Grenfell was: 'were they too fat to squeeze out of the windows, or just too stupid to leave?' I tore him off a strip and told him he had a long way to go before he was fit to join the human race... He used to work for the Treasury (as did his wider family). Ugh. I was waiting for a text spluttering about JRM being treated badly by 'snowflakes'. I've not had one. Perhaps he listened to me, after all.

MockersthefeMANist · 06/11/2019 16:40

Anyone can set up a podium in Downing St if they want to. BJ did so without a Lion & Unicorn on his podium, indicating that he was speaking politically and not officially.

But it was the same old shit: 'I didn't want an election. They made me do it,' etc.

The online fuss about Jo Swinson's hubby is not edifying either: Transparency International is an International NGO. It is based in Germany. The EU money goes to Germany. Swinson Hubby does not "Own" TI, nor does he pocket the money personally or this would show up in the accounts, etc.

Is that all you've got?

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 16:41

- 62% of businesses are dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied with government guidance and info ahead of Brexit

Which suggests you wouldn't trust 38% of businesses with your lunch money, if they are remotely "satisfied with government guidance and info".

Any chance there's a list of the 38% ? I may have some investment decisions to make ....

Sam Coates Sky*@SamCoatesSky*

Boris Johnson’s election leaflet for Uxbridge.... appears to miss off the fact he is prime minister (unless I’ve not spotted it?)

Axel Antoni@antoni_UK Replying to @SamCoatesSky

Boris Johnson's team has already delivered his election leaflet through my letter box last weekend.

He is definitely standing in Uxbridge & South Ruislip.

(surprised that there is no, none, zero mention of Brexit on the leaflet).

< re his election leaflet:

Maybe he's hoping Uxbridge won't notice he is PM ?
He should avoid hospital photos in future
and it looks odd for the PM to join a "Save Uxbridge Police Station" - which answers my question : he wants to campaign against implementation of his own cuts ! >

Hmm

Probably a good idea to be extremely wary when near police with guns. They have a habit of shooting people and then asking questions. You'd be far safer approaching a terrorist ...

MockersthefeMANist · 06/11/2019 16:45

They told Andrew Mitchell to get off his bike.

tobee · 06/11/2019 16:46

Hmm. ... the Jo Swinson's Liberal Democrats Battle Bus? Wonder how that's gonna go down for you Jo?

Can I just say I can't stand the term "battle bus". Never have done. Can't stand the word Brexit either..... Hmm

ARoomWithoutADoor · 06/11/2019 16:47

Jo Swinson's bus is nowt compared to Nicola Sturgeon's whirlybird during IndyRef 1 - now that was wannabe Presidential ;)

tobee · 06/11/2019 16:48

Is it supposed to be a good look for Boris Johnson that he's about two sizes too fat for his suits? Overfed Tories etc.
