New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Yet another moderate One Nation Tory in a safe seat gives up the ghost.

Every one that goes changes the complexion of the Parliamentary party one little bit.

Ed Vaizey@edvaizey

After much reflection I have decided not to stand at the next election.

I will campaign hard for my successor & look forward to @BorisJohnson and @conservatives winning a great majority.
Thanks to all in Wantage & Didcot who supported me over so many years #vexit

Guess what they're saying about Corbyn in 2019?

" the worst decision of his premiership"
he'll soon surpass that

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Another of the Rebel 21 comes back to haunt Boris Johnson,

and the worst decision of his premiership to suspend them.

Anne Milton@AnneMilton

I wrote to the PM yesterday to tell him I felt unable to be a Conservative Candidate.

I have considered very carefully what is best to do and will stand as an Independent Candidate at the next General Election.

1945: Clement Attlee branded a Stalinist

Poster00 It looks like the Tories have been trying to copy Churchill since 1945 ...

Hi I'm catching up on this thread so I'm still looking at posts from 11 am ish.

Just wanted to say on here that it was me that made that comment to @Bearbehind.
And I would like to apologise to you Bear. For being snippy. I wasn't meaning to say "don't tell me what to do Bear"because you are Bear, iyswim.

I have been the only one with a position on another thread on a controversial board and understand what's it's like to be in that position so should be more thoughtful.

And lets not forget BCF that Foot was of course a Soviet Informant

Just love being gaslighted about apparant soviet links in the Labour party for decades by a party that appears to be in bed with the russians Hmm

What's the difference between God and Jo Swinson? God doesn't have a Jo Swinson complex.

Just saw that on twitter Grin Grin

Those gagging for a new Labour leader - looks like it won't be Tom Watson on the right ....

His majority at West Bromwich East is nearly 8,000
BUT:

  • He has been one of the fiercest campaigners for a PV, but his constituents voted 68% Leave
  • He's on the Labour right and George Galloway is standing against him, so he'll lose some votes to the left
  • Harvey Proctor too - although a Tory, he'll get some sympathy as an innocent victim - Watson believed the lying "Nick" and pressured police to investigate Proctor for serious offences
  • The Tories have him marked as one of the target seats to compensate for expected losses to SNP & LDems

Even if he survives, he'll be badly damaged

Tory chiefs confident they can oust Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson in December general election

In a Lib Dem leaflet, the party edited a Guardian headline to say “Lib Dems winning and on the up after by-election victory.”
The original made clear the words came from Jo Swinson, not the Guardian itself. This is misleading.

RogersRoget · 06/11/2019 15:14

The www.livefrombrexit.com/tacticals link is interesting. Our seat is one with a split recommendation. Will watch how that changes (academic interest only, nailed on winner unfortunately).

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2019 15:17

Both parties have turned the spending taps on.

Nothing inherently wrong with that - except that for the Tories it goes against nearly 10 years of their policy in govt

  • are they lying or do they recognise austerity was a fuckup too ?

....the Tory Brexit fuckups will make it hard for either party to fulfill these promises:

The Conservative government has spent an average of 37.4 % GDP over the last 9.5 years.

the Resolution Foundation calculates that the Tories's promises - so far - will increase this to 41.3 per cent of GDP

Meanwhile Labour will go to 43.3 % GDP

I wonder how much Swinson is offering us .....

Peregrina · 06/11/2019 15:25

Ex Speaker Bercow thinks Brexit is the biggest foreign policy mistake since the War. I wonder how he rates it alongside Suez?

I think myself they are both part of the same thing - the end of Empire and not yet finding a proper role.

dreichwinter · 06/11/2019 15:29

What's the difference between God and Jo Swinson? God doesn't have a Jo Swinson complex.

I would say that Swinson and Corbyn are similar in that for either of them to get into government they are likely to need support from other parties.
It would seem Corbyn is much likely to make this happen than Swinson but either would better from a Brexit standpoint than Johnson.

Bearbehind · 06/11/2019 15:32

@tobee - apology accepted, thank you 😁

This is a very emotive and divisive subject, it would just be nice if we all did what we can to at least make it inclusive and avoid alienating people just for the sake of it.

Off back under my rock now 😂

Emilyontmoor · 06/11/2019 15:34

Peston just posted on Facebook that he is wondering if the Tories are throwing the election. Has he departed from his usual “controversial number ten sources” in favour of Mumsnet Hmm

Emilyontmoor · 06/11/2019 15:40

On JRM and the Catholic predilection for othering, when our community took our Council to judicial review for setting up an exclusive Catholic faith school as a legacy for the Tory Council Leader and giving it a rare perfect school site when there was a looming shortage of inclusive school places (the free school set up by the community is oversubscribed in spite of still operating out of portacabins four years on) the Councils lawyers referred to “Catholic children” and “ordinary children” 😡

Hoooo · 06/11/2019 15:41

Oi, Peston!!
Get your own ideas, chum!
(The cheek!!!)

Emilyontmoor · 06/11/2019 15:46

I don’t really want to add to the noise around JRM but one thing that has stuck with me from that terrible night (apart from the smell that hung in the air across West London) was the firefighters describing the trauma of driving towards the fire and being completely traumatised by the sight of the fire leaping up the outside of the building. They had never seen anything like it before, and they knew they were going to have to go in there and get people out......

prettybird · 06/11/2019 15:50

@IainDale Iain Dale

There is one word to describe the Conservative campaign so far - Clustershambles. And that's being kind.

I've counted 8 pretty major gaffes or fk-ups.

Best to have them now rather than at the end of the campaign, but even so.

Marginal seat candidates must be very angry.

Iain Dale is a right wing commentator. Shock

Hoooo · 06/11/2019 15:53

I'm telling you...they are trying to throw it

DGRossetti · 06/11/2019 15:53

On JRM and the Catholic predilection for othering, when our community took our Council to judicial review for setting up an exclusive Catholic faith school

Separation of church and state really can't come soon enough.

I wonder if it could happen as an anti-muslim initiative, should the tories get back in ?

Or is it too simplistic to think that equal exclusion is just as good as "100% inclusion" ?

ClashCityRocker · 06/11/2019 15:54

I'm going to hold my hands up here and admit that I was one of the posters who thought the tories would run a very slick election campaign and it would all be over.

Although it is early days yet, its a very bad start.

Feeling a tiny bit more optimistic tonight although there's still a long way to go yet.

I'm also noticing a lot more eye-rolling whenever someone mentions 'Corbyn the Commie' type stuff. Is it possible that they've overused that line of attack and people are realising that there's little of substance to it? Anecdata I know, but there does seem to be some genuine movement.

Hoooo · 06/11/2019 15:55

Maybe we are hitting peak-commie-corbyn?

TatianaLarina · 06/11/2019 15:59

Maybe we’re also hitting lesser of two lunatics.
