Seeing rumours that Amber Rudd is to resign from the Cabinet. Is this the start of the exodus? Can’t believe so many have stayed after this week if they have any concern for their own longer term political careers..

Has she resigned as a minister or MP? Or both?

Resigned as a minister and resigned the Tory Whip, but will remain an MP. She’ll join her kindred spirits (Gauke, Hammond etc) as an independent Tory. She said she’ll stand as an independent Tory at the next election.

Yes what she says about No Deal is so telling

I think the 21 plus others will form a new party.

Wish they'd join the Lib Dems, we don't need lots of little parties

That's a devastating resignation letter.

I'm also loving Larrythecat on twitter updating with the ministerial resignations.

Does she have her eye on being part of a government of National unity? Seems like the only way out of this mess....

That's actually a very good point. I wonder if she is looking to head it?

Wowzers the letter is spectacularly damning.

She is a remainer though, so Boris probably glad she’s gone.

Yeah, Boris will be just delighted with another, high profile resignation. 😂

Do we think she's gone around to crack open the whiskey with Jo and the 21?!

Give it another week and we'll have two Conservative parties; a nice one and a nasty one, or a sensible one and a silly one a la Monty Python.

@TheoriginalLEM What is the shortest time anyone has been prime minister

Current record holder is probably George Canning - it depends what definitions you use as there have been others who were officially asked by the Monarch to form a government but were unable to persuade anyone to join their cabinet and had to give up after a few days. In terms of actually presiding over a functional government the shortest on record is Canning's 119 days. BoJo would have to last until 21st November to avoid taking over the record.

Nick Robinson on Twitter: “It’s not just that she has resigned from the Cabinet. It’s not just that she has resigned the Conservative whip. It is the language Amber Rudd uses to attack Boris Johnson that makes her resignation so devastating.”

Rudd has twice delivered devastating jibes at BJ. Previously, she said, "He is the life and soul of the party, but you'd never let him drive you home."

The only mystery is why she ever joined his cabinet in the first place.

No where's that Nicky Morgan gone? (A: Very quiet.)

....that Nicky Morgan who said - unequivocally - that she wouldn’t serve in a Johnson cabinet....

Is this the start of an exodus? Who will be next, I think it might be Esther Mcvay - a bit of a long shot, but I suspect she might have some scores to settle.

Can someone explain to me why this is such a big deal for Boris and may mean the beginning of the end for him? Can’t he just replace her with someone more Brexity?

Report
bellainthemiddle · 07/09/2019 22:09

Because having something resembling "a broad church of opinion" in his cabinet gave him credibility @Quaffy.

She was also talked about as a possible leader but chose not to stand.

More MPs may follow her lead. Others might look at where this is heading and desert the ship...

It's obvious Johnson told the moderates he was doing all this to get a better deal but now it's been revealed there is no negotiating going on at all and his endgame is actually dragging us out of the EU without a deal. It was revealed in the Scottish court case papers the other day and that is what has caused the Tory moderates to jump ship.
