Seeing rumours that Amber Rudd is to resign from the Cabinet. Is this the start of the exodus? Can’t believe so many have stayed after this week if they have any concern for their own longer term political careers..

May I ask for the source of this, OP?

Usual coterie of political journos on Twitter - no inside information, unfortunately!

This could be fun😂 I reckon I could probably muster 50 votes or so (local)....
I don't know if it is true but someone told me once that Uxbridge had been Tory for over 100 yrs solidly. Turnip with a blue rosette territory.
Wikipedia says boundary commission recommended changes in 2018 for next election. Anyone know whether this would happen in a non fixed term parliament election or does it have to go to consultation first??

SleepyKat

“I thought that traditionally the other major parties didn’t put anyone up against a prime minister as well? Have I dreamt that?”

Not sure SleepyKat but I think we can safely say if it is, tradition and convention have flown out of the window these last few weeks. Crikey, I’d stand against him and happily lose my deposit if it meant the 7 votes I’d muster would mean they didn’t go to him! Now, there’s a thought. How many independent candidates does it take to unseat a Prime Minister?.......

Nick Clegg pissed students off with the back tracking on fees issue. Seeing as his Hallam constituency is student central that was rather silly.

Looks like there will be a labour candidate for Uxbridge.

Wish that if John Bercow gets the boot by the Tories putting someone up against him he stands in Uxbridge instead. That would be hilarious.

Ab-so-lut-ely NOT!!!

Can't think of a British sitting PM who lost their seat. Brian Mulroney in Canada retired before he was pushed and his seat went the way of all the others when the Canadian Tories were wiped out.

I think party leaders usually have quite large majorities sleepy having established themselves in “safe” seats. Didn’t Nick Clegg get booted out in 2017 though?

I was interested in Rod Liddle’s community in today’s Sunday Times. He commented that Boris’ own constituency majority is not so solid and that he risks losing votes to remain.

Which is interesting when Bo Jo says he really really wants an election ASAP.

Just imagine a sitting Prime Minister losing their seat.

Neither Lab nor LDs will put up a candidate against Bercow, so it's him vs the Tory and perhaps the Brexie

It will be interesting! His constituency looked pretty evenly split with Brexit/Remain vote.

Be rather embarrassing if he won.

Good post, lonelyplanetmum. The Conservatives are trying to appeal to the right-wing hardliners - who will never be happy, and don't actually want to be happy - at the cost of potentially millions of votes from pragmatic centre-right voters.

Let's not forget that 39% of Tory voters voted to Remain in 2016. Most of them would probably accept a softish Brexit, but will be appalled by no-deal and all this pandering to Farage.

I just heard one of BoZo’s old chums on Broadcasting House putting forward the same argument Ownerofanangrycat. So, in this brave new world, when you insult someone what you’re actually doing is asserting their rights? Well, who knew.

I think his argument is that the quote in the context of the article was something along the lines of "Personally, I think the burqa / niqab makes women look like letterboxes and bank robbers, but in a liberal society they have the right to wear it if they want."

But it was possible for him to make that point without using those terms. But hey, he's a journalist! He's "flying the kite". The problem is that words have consequences, particularly if you are the PM...

Apparently BJ calling Muslim women letterboxes and bank robbers was supportive of their right to wear niqabs and not meant to humiliate, embarrass or isolate.

Well, that's put me right.

Think PPs have already mentioned the spectre of McVey.
I’m also worried that Ian Duncan Smith will be brought back in. That self-important proselytiser would be the final straw. Demonstrates the state of our politics when intellectual lightweights like him are described as “big beasts”. Clarke, yes, Hammond, possibly. Ian Duncan-Smith? Good grief, no. Thick as mince.

John Bercow has, effectively been deselected as the Conservatives will put up a candidate against him at the next election. He is a Conservative but being effectively removed because he stood up for Parliament again the Government’s wishes. Another vindictive move and they are desperate for seats. I hope electors will vote for Bercow if he continues. He’s a good constituency MP. If you do the right thing, you are effectively expelled.

The ERG also gained prominence due to UKIP and their gain in popularity. They persuaded Cameron that he needed UKIP “hearts and minds” and therefore needed to offer a referendum.
