Boris's Promises

Thought I would start a thread to keep track of what Boris Johnson has promised to see how likely it is that these things will actually be delivered. We know he has form for making false promises. The Cummings spin machine is in full swing playing on people's hopes and fears and telling people exactly what they want to hear. So far we have

£350 million a week for the NHS
To leave the EU on 31st of October or before
Tax cuts for high earners
20,000 more police officers by 2022
Fix the social care crisis
Increase school funding
Guaranteed rights for EU citizens
Points based immigration system
Manchester - Leeds High speed rail link

Feel free to add, I am pretty sure that there will be many more in the days and weeks ahead.

He’s promised to make sure farmers have the support they need and they’ll help them to find new markets if the current ones collapse in the event of no deal.

MaxNormal · 30/07/2019 18:05

TO rules explicitly say that you cannot directly recompense producers (e.g. farmers) for the impact of tariffs.

MaxNormal · 30/07/2019 18:05

WTO rules that should say.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 30/07/2019 18:59

And that’s exactly why that ones going to come back and bite him on the arse, Max.

BackInTime · 30/07/2019 19:54

As I said before Boris is not a details man. Just tell the Welsh farmers that the government will help them, regardless of whether it's possible under WTO. Main aim is to get a boost in the polls, get a good headline and then piss off back to London.

It’s exactly the reason the thread needed starting though.

He has to break it because what he’s said today isn’t actually possible, but when he’s pulled up on it in 3-6 months he’s going to deny he ever said it.

I have struggled with why farmers voted to leave, if it means they lose their subsidies

Lifebi · 30/07/2019 23:13

Stupidity perhaps?

Doubletrouble99 · 31/07/2019 01:10

Farm subsidies are not distributed in this country in a manner that protects the most venerable types of farming. They have been worked out by the EU to protect methods of farming practiced in mainland Europe. Farmers voted leave because they want a fairer system of subsidy and similar regulation.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/07/2019 01:17

But will they get subsidies once we are out of the EU?

The80sweregreat · 31/07/2019 03:54

Just read some headlines on the daily mail web page this morning that PM has 'hinted' we could stay in the single market etc till 2021 and the comments page has erupted !
at this rate, the brexit party will clean up at any GE coming up.
i too am confused, but maybe this is what they want?

Another brexit falsehood and why UK farming is the least sustainable among EU countries.

This means that national authorities are responsible for the administration and control of direct payments to farmers in their country. Each country also has a certain level of flexibility in the way they grant these payments to take account of national farming conditions, which vary greatly throughout the European Union

Not to say CAP needs reforming but once again EU blamed for UK problems.

£2.1 billion to fund prep for no deal.

Even "Boris bikes" were dreamt up by... Ken Livingstone.

I've seen OFO bikes turn into rampant litter in a couple of cities.

In a twist that surprises no one, new NHS money might turn out not to be quite so new.

Quelle surprise!
