Boris's Promises

BackInTime · 28/07/2019 09:55

Thought I would start a thread to keep track of what Boris Johnson has promised to see how likely it is that these things will actually be delivered. We know he has form for making false promises. The Cummings spin machine is in full swing playing on people's hopes and fears and telling people exactly what they want to hear. So far we have

£350 million a week for the NHS
To leave the EU on 31st of October or before
Tax cuts for high earners
20,000 more police officers by 2022
Fix the social care crisis
Increase school funding
Guaranteed rights for EU citizens
Points based immigration system
Manchester - Leeds High speed rail link

Feel free to add, I am pretty sure that there will be many more in the days and weeks ahead.

I like him too.
He delivered on infrastructure in London and I believe he will deliver now.
Why not be positive and at least say "let's wait and see"?
Why all this negativity?
I voted Brexit in the Euro elections but will vote Tory now.

CendrillonSings · 29/07/2019 10:43

Corbyn promised the moon on a stick last time, and 40% of the population fell for it with a smile on their face. Bet he and McDonnell are fuming that a more wily and charismatic politician than May is pinching their best tactic!

missyB1 · 29/07/2019 10:43

He can make all the promises in the world but they mean jack shit because we know he’s a bloody big liar!!

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 11:09

What exactly did he deliver in London? The Garden Bridge? Cable car in the wrong place so used by 1 regular commuter? Routemaster buses in which the air conditioning didn't work, but would pay for themselves by sales elsewhere? Sum total of sales elsewhere = 0.

"Boris" bikes which were Livingstone's idea? London Olympics where the spadework to win that had been done long before he became Mayor?

lonelyplanetmum · 29/07/2019 11:23

It's people from outside London who think Boris Johnson delivered.

Most Londoners disagree.

Alsohuman · 29/07/2019 11:24

It’s a wishlist and if Corbyn was promising it, it would be ridiculed for the fantasy it is.

BackInTime · 29/07/2019 14:47

@Coppersulphate More than happy to be proven wrong but his track record as a bluffer makes me sceptical. The Cummings propaganda machine is in full swing telling us exactly what we want to hear with little substance behind it. There is no plan or details yet of how these things are to be delivered while facing the economic consequences of a no deal Brexit.

"I voted Brexit in the Euro elections but will vote Tory now."
Which is exactly what Johnson is aiming for.

The80sweregreat · 29/07/2019 15:49

yes, if J C was spouting all this spend spend spend nonsense it would be ridiculed and shouts of ' wrecking the economy' etc etc.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 16:12

I can think both of them are fucking wastrel dipshits. That is possible.

Alsohuman · 29/07/2019 16:14

It is indeed possible @bellinisurge, that isn’t how the media are spinning it, though.

Coppersulphate · 29/07/2019 22:14

Backin,
You can hardly expect detailed planning. He's been PM for less than a week.
He is positive and optimistic which is good.
He got the Elizabeth line in London, Crossrail, the olympics, Boris bikes and a lot of cycle routes and he got the crime rate right down.
I spend a lot of time in London and he did a lot.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 22:16

"he got the crime rate right do" - it went down by the same percentage nationwide.

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 23:55

Crossrail

The Crossrail Hybrid Bill was presented to Parliament in February 2005 and the principle of the scheme was established at the second reading debate in July. The Bill was then scrutinised by committees in both Houses of Parliament where affected parties could appear as petitioners to have their objections heard. It was a long process, but ultimately worthwhile – with some changes the Bill finally received Royal Assent in July 2008.

The Crossrail Act 2008 finally gave Crossrail a confirmed route - Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, with new rail tunnels (and stations) under central London as required. The funding deal for the scheme was complex (the full details of which can be found here) but the basic principle was simple – the cost would be shared between the Government, TfL and the business community.

After 35 years of planning and development, Crossrail finally broke ground on 15 May 2009 at Canary Wharf, when the Mayor and the then Transport Secretary Lord Adonis launched the first pile into the North Dock in Docklands at the site of the new Canary Wharf station.

Boris Johnson became Mayor of London on 4th May 2008, so as far as Crossrail goes he did bugger all until he made a show of cutting the first turf.

Ditto with the Olympics.

Oakenbeach · 30/07/2019 00:03

”he got the crime rate right do" - it went down by the same percentage nationwide.

You mean he reduced crime in the whole of the UK, not just London - oh what a super mayor! I always knew Boris walked on water!

Some meanies don’t believe he were directly responsible for the Olympics like the fake news in the link below:

Oakenbeach · 30/07/2019 00:06

@Coppersulphate

I expect you also think the Queen won the Falklands War and the 1966 World Cup Final Confused

BackInTime · 30/07/2019 08:59

@Coppersulphate Boris Johnson is well known for not being a details man and for lacking focus in previous positions such as the foreign office. There was a good reason why he was kept away from interviews and TV debates for much of the leadership campaign and when he did appear it was glaringly obvious he had no idea what he was talking about when it came to quite crucial things he was advocating like like WTO and GATT 24. Let's also not forget the kipper waving lies and the small matter of promising £350million a week for the NHS.

The man is a liar and a bluffer of the highest order. He is now about to spend millions on a public information campaign preparing the public for something that is supposedly going to be wonderful Confused

prettybird · 30/07/2019 09:40

Adding to his promises:

£300 million of new money to Scotland, Wales and NI although some of it was already underway under city/town deals so is not "new" Hmm

Coppersulphate · 30/07/2019 09:46

Oaken,
Don't talk drivel

Coppersulphate · 30/07/2019 09:49

You lot don't like him because you have finally realised that we a PM who will take us out of the EU.
And all you want is to stop Brexit at all costs, even though Leave won in the referendum.

MaxNormal · 30/07/2019 09:54

Copper you're totally ignoring the facts as they are being presented to you, why is that?

NoBaggyPants · 30/07/2019 10:00

You can hardly expect detailed planning. He's been PM for less than a week.

Yet Labour did, and still got jumped on for it.

Different rules for different people?

OstrichRunning · 30/07/2019 10:31

This article has an interesting take on 'Boris' promises', for anyone interested -

Emilyontmoor · 30/07/2019 12:26

Copper By infrastructure do you mean the near 400 tower blocks 288 approved by him, that have gone up in London, in the main built by Asian investors for Asian investors (sales actually launched in KL and Hong Kong) that sit empty because their owners are overseas. He even managed to be the first Mayor to undermine the planning regulations that protected the iconic views of St Paul’s by approving a tower block in the sight line. After he said there would be no Dubai on Thames........

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 15:09

According to the Huffington Post yesterday, Johnson has now contradicted Gove's assertion that the government are preparing for a no deal brexit.
No wonder the rest of us are confused Hmm
