Boris's Promises

Thought I would start a thread to keep track of what Boris Johnson has promised to see how likely it is that these things will actually be delivered. We know he has form for making false promises. The Cummings spin machine is in full swing playing on people's hopes and fears and telling people exactly what they want to hear. So far we have

£350 million a week for the NHS
To leave the EU on 31st of October or before
Tax cuts for high earners
20,000 more police officers by 2022
Fix the social care crisis
Increase school funding
Guaranteed rights for EU citizens
Points based immigration system
Manchester - Leeds High speed rail link

Feel free to add, I am pretty sure that there will be many more in the days and weeks ahead.

Unfortunately I think many people will be taken in by these promises and polls today have indicated a bit of a boris bounce in support for the tories.
I saw a bbc report from the north east the other evening. Many of those interviewed were either longtime labour voters or had never voted at all but most wanted to leave and they seemed very impressed with him due to this 'can do' optimistic persona he's adopted. He'll unite former brexit party voters and tory leavers but also attract labour leavers taken in by all this promised spending which could have worrying impact on a GE.

Many many police officers. Just many.

People are just so desperate for some positivity after 3 years of Brexit, it's easy to see why the Tories have had a surge in the polls.

How can anyone promise anything?
Just give an honest answer to what you’d try and do if circumstances permit.
If we leave without a deal it’s going to be politicians making up stuff as the go along for years As long as it’s fair and reasonablepoliciesv, does it matter? In fact the worse thing is to sign up to arrangements for years when things are likely to change quickly.

I am a school governor, waiting with interest to see if he fulfils his promise of increasing school funding. However, being ever so slightly cynical I can see him increasing the funding per pupil, but taking some other sort of funding away, so schools won't actually be any better off.

School governor here too. Dont actually believe any of it. Per pupil funding here increased last year very very slightly but other funding was reduced including the lump sum amount. We were the worst funded area so no reserves left. No idea what to do anymore. Next year we have a massive hole.

Although I'm desperate, still don't believe it.

I am not sure that people will vote for it. People have seen it all before. Maybe if they saw the money actually being spent? Johnson's words are cheap and everyone knows that.

Surely the question is not which promises will he keep but ‘where does he think the money for them will come from?’

I’m liking them so far. I wasn’t impressed with Jeremy Corbyn bad mouthing the 20,000 officers when his 2017 pledge was for 10,000. He’s got a bit of a cheek with that.
I think we should give him a chance, I actually like him. I’m not a Tory btw. I’m a floating voter (except a Corbyn labour). If the pledges actually happen, I don’t see how people could bad mouth him. I may be naive though

He said he’d protect citizens rights, but he can’t pass legislation to prove it before we actually leave. And his idea of citizen right is the settled status scheme which we know has plenty of holes.

The silver lining? ALL of the EU parents I talk to in my kids school are doing the naturalisation procedure, which means thousands of £ to the home office but also a right to vote NOT for this government at the next chance...

• Being sacked in 1988 for entirely making up a quote in a front-page story.
• four-year mistress Petronella Wyatt, which he denied and she had an abortion.
• helping his fraudulent mate Darius Guppy in his attempts to commit ABH or GBH on a journalist
•worsening the chances of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe getting a release from Iranian prison by making sloppy comments when Foreign Secretary in 2017.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion ...but I'm interested in why these qualities mean he should be given a chance?

I agree @lonelyplanetmum, while I would love to believe that these things will be delivered his track record does not fill me with confidence.

For me that would be a vote winner, although I have no intention of voting Tory. For many in the Tory and Brexit parties, that is a complete vote loser.

I am watching John Oliver's Last Week Tonight on Boris Johnson. He nails it. He also mentions, along with the zip wire antics (that some say were orchestrated by BJ) the I make model bus bollocks as a way of changing google hits.

In one Facebook group I'm in probably more than 50% of members are in the UK without proper paperwork. You'd think Boris is a saint by how he is referred to in there, people are actually including him in prayers. Here's another half a million loyal supporters.
And I think, if framed correctly, it could be a winner with Tory electorate as well. If there's a fee, say £10k - £20k to get a residence permit, people would pay, and the concept of "paying for their sins" would appeal to more conservative voters too.

Has anyone missed here the actual fact that BJ would have to get all these promises thru Parliament with a majority of precisely one.
