Where did the Brexit Party get my details from?

Have googled to no avail. I received the Brexit Party flyer addressed to me. I've never even voted for Tories let alone anything like UKIP so curious how they got my details and why they thought I might be remotely interested?

Brexit party have discriminated against me as they think I’m Scottish

I don't think that's true, I have a very Scottish name too and my partner has a traditional English first and surname. I'm the only person in or household to get mail from political parties, even though we're both on the electoral roll.

Goingonabeerhunt · 18/05/2019 13:41

I wonder this too. I am not on the open electoral roll so no clue
I got leaflets from UKIP and Brexit Party. A right laugh as I am half European

feellikeanalien · 18/05/2019 13:43

I've had one from the Brexit Party and one from UKIP, both addressed to me, and one from Labour which wasn 't addressed to anyone. DP has had nothing but my name is first alphabetically.

Nothing from Lib Dems or Tories.

Our MP is a hardline Brexiteer but I don't know if that makes any difference to their targeting strategy.

feellikeanalien · 18/05/2019 13:44

I'm also not on the open register.

prettybird · 18/05/2019 13:55

We (household of 3 voters) have had nothing from the Turquoise Party - maybe they realise that Glasgow is a lost cause to them Grin

They'd be right Wink

bellinisurge · 18/05/2019 14:00

@feellikeanalien , it's not about being on the open register it's about being on the Full Register. Which we all are. Candidates have the right to send electoral communications to everyone on the full register. And we all have the right to throw their bollocks intone recycling. Let them waste their money.

lljkk · 18/05/2019 14:01

I got the full suite this morning, UKIP, BP AND an EDL flyer (but last one came to all houses from Royal Mail). Very pretty. I deffo like UKIP's colour scheme best.

Ah shucks. Too bad for them I sent my postal ballot off yesterday for Ch-UK. Wink

The Tory party are apparently too broke to get any campaign materials out, so who is bankrolling The Brexit Party?
Arron Banks

CitadelsofScience · 18/05/2019 14:44

My dd got one too, she was HORRIFIED. Myself and dh didn't get one though.

I got one from the Brexit party but neither DH or DS got one. We all voted remain so it has absolutely nothing to do with voting preferences. DMIL also got one - also a remainer. I think they must have just picked one person from each household from the electoral register.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/05/2019 15:01

I got one but DP didn't. I'm first in the alphabet. How odd. The other party leaflets weren't addressed to anyone.

BishopBrennansArse · 18/05/2019 15:09

This is how they both got sent back

I work for an MP.
There’s a difference between addressed & non addressed leaflets in elections. I can’t remember the rules exactly but the ico has stuff here
ico.org.uk/media/1589/promotion_of_a_political_party.pdf

I think that each party gets 1 Freepost mailing to each household in elections, and anything more than that they pay for.

Political parties get a copy of the whole electoral roll. Not the closed roll. Elected representatives also get it (eg MPs)

In some cases, you will be sent targetted stuff depending on how they think you have voted previously. (Based on canvassing info) In other cases, it’ll just be to 1 person in the household- possibly whoever’s name was written first in the roll.

There are strict rules about what can be shared- eg if you write to your MP and give them your email address, it is illegal for them to give this to their central party. Not all MPs stuck to the law though...

GeorgiaTrotmansParachute · 18/05/2019 16:25

We had one too addressed to DH. I haven't stopped taking the piss out of him yet.... I have told him that if he is a secret friend of Nigel's, this will negatively impact our marriage.

Awittyusernamehere · 18/05/2019 16:30

They seem to be going through the electoral roll and addressing the leaflets to the first name alphabetically in the household. My DH got one, we have posted it back to their address without a stamp so they have to pay the postage.

faelavie · 19/05/2019 10:55

My DH got one, but I didn't. I did take the piss out of him a fair bit. We are strong remainers, I'd be surprised if this leaflet changes any remainers' minds.

gamerwidow · 19/05/2019 11:05

They’re not really interested in changing people’s minds though I think. It’s more an incitement to their base not to sit this election out given that turn out for European elections is around 30% usually.
This election really hinges on who can actually get their supporters into the voting booth. Whipping up anxiety and fear is one way to prompt people to take action that’s traditionally been very successful for the right.

Eve · 19/05/2019 11:08

Received some here as well and are marking it return to sender so they need to pay for it.

Confuzzlediddled · 19/05/2019 11:12

Not 1st alphabetically in our household, but it was the 75 year old who received it...

gamerwidow · 19/05/2019 11:13

Ps I know the above is obvious but it’s worth remembering that public opinion counts for nothing and only votes count. It’s no good being remain if you don’t turn up at the ballot box (like last time)

Kaddm · 19/05/2019 11:22

I’ve had mailings address to me from all of the parties.

Tink1990 · 19/05/2019 15:22

Ive personally received two different letters from Lib Dems. No other party.

DarlingNikita · 19/05/2019 15:30

I think they have also possibly used the first name in the alphabet for each house as DH got one and I didn’t and he is first alphabetically

I came to this conclusion as we have three adults on the electoral roll in our household and the lucky punter (!!) who is first alphabetically got one, while the other two of us didn't. The same happened with leaflets from the Lib Dems and UKIP.
