Where did the Brexit Party get my details from?

Have googled to no avail. I received the Brexit Party flyer addressed to me. I've never even voted for Tories let alone anything like UKIP so curious how they got my details and why they thought I might be remotely interested?

If you’re on the electoral roll then political parties have access to your details. Even if you tick the box to not be on the public list.

greenelephantscarf · 18/05/2019 11:09

are you on the open part of the electoral roll?

MsPavlichenko · 18/05/2019 11:11

Electoral roll.

Tooner · 18/05/2019 11:12

I got one too, the only one in our family who did, very strange

NuffingChora · 18/05/2019 11:14

There’s a handy thread on twitter about this - I’ll link below:

It is clearly an electoral roll thing. All parties have access to the full roll for a one off election communication. It actually calls it that on the shitty thing.
You can start worrying and complaining to the Information Commissioner if they do it again. The SNP were bollocked a while ago for making automated calls to random people. The Commissioner (Elizabeth Denham at the moment) has generally been happy to take political parties on.

BishopBrennansArse · 18/05/2019 11:23

No idea. They sent one to DH as did UKIP and we are not happy.

headinhands · 18/05/2019 11:24

So it's random? They have no idea of voting preferences?

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 18/05/2019 11:26

I think they have also possibly used the first name in the alphabet for each house as DH got one and I didn’t and he is first alphabetically

PinkHeartLovesCake · 18/05/2019 11:26

I would imagine they can see details of people that are registered to vote and they’ve just sent the leaflets to everyone. Me and dh both got one......

BishopBrennansArse · 18/05/2019 11:28

That's a really good point, Miranda, he's C and I'm E...

sackrifice · 18/05/2019 11:31

I got one from Brexit and one from UKIP.

Comet456 · 18/05/2019 11:37

Well, I’m disgusted. My DD (with a very English name) got one and I didn’t. I have remarried and have a non English name. I think the Brexit party have discriminated against me as they think I’m Scottish and will be voting for a second Scottish referendum to leave the U.K. and rejoin Europe, therefore it’s a waste of time trying to secure my vote.

Still, the flyer gave me a laugh as I never thought that I’d see my DD and Nigel Farage on the same page 😂

Songsofexperience · 18/05/2019 11:39

Comet, I have a foreign last name (being a dual national) and got one, so did my mum and she's not even British... I think it's random.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 18/05/2019 11:40

MirandaWest
I got one and one from ukip (S) but DH (B) didn’t so I don’t think it can be that in all cases.
It made me feel a bit sick that they even thought that I might be interested. I know it’s not personal but ick!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 18/05/2019 11:42

Maybe it is personal actually. I sent both canvassers away with a flea in their ears before the election so maybe they are trying to piss me off.

Ginkypig · 18/05/2019 11:43

Me too brexit and the next day ukip.

I'm not happy that the rules allow my details to be shared for the use of political campaign material. I don't think any party should be allowed access to my details unless I have allowed that.

I am not on the open register, I am on the other one. That version is supposed to be unaccessible to advertisers (which in my opinion this is)

All I want is to have the ability to vote with my details being private and protected. I don't think that is too big an ask is it?

Peregrina · 18/05/2019 12:19

Ginkypig, sadly electoral law doesn't agree with you, Registered parties are entitled to a copy of the full register.

DH has been an agent for candidates in elections past, and knew the electoral office had sent him a copy of the wrong register because I am not on the open one, and my name wasn't on the copy he received.

What I would like to see is an electoral law which disallowed false advertising - so no 'we send £350 million a week to the EU.' We don't.
The "Let's spend it on the NHS instead." is a bit more tricky because that's more of a statement of what we would like to do. Although the Leave campaign leaders couldn't renege on this promise quickly enough 'Oh we never said we would', they cried.

Geegle · 18/05/2019 12:23

I got one, DH didn’t. My initial is also earlier in the alphabet than his.
I’ve returned the flyer to sender with an explanation of why I would t vote for them if they were the last party on earth Grin

gamerwidow · 18/05/2019 12:39

All political parties are allowed access to the electoral roll for campaigning means. Not all parties have the huge budget for advertising the Brexit Party has though.Other parties need to step up their game because Farage is an insufferable arsehole with no policies but is great at PR.

bellinisurge · 18/05/2019 12:57

I got one , my dh didn't. I suspect they are profiling women as a broad brush approach intrusion area.

bellinisurge · 18/05/2019 13:02

"Instrusion area" I mean, in my area. Although "intrusion " weirdly works!

Comet456 · 18/05/2019 13:12

The UKIP leaflet has just landed on the mat for DD.

Peregrina · 18/05/2019 13:16

The Tory party are apparently too broke to get any campaign materials out, so who is bankrolling The Brexit Party? I don't believe for one moment that it's all coming from Farage's £25 supporters.

KitchenDancefloor · 18/05/2019 13:25

I got one. My DH didn't.

They didn't include a return address so I couldn't 'return to sender' unstamped.

They've also been pursuing me with Facebook adverts which I keep reporting as spam.

Apparently their strategy is to bombard the over 40s. I don't know why they're leaving DH alone!
