We've had a new thread pretty much everyday for the last week or so, so I'm short on inspiration.

There haven't been too many new developments today. There have been two ministerial resignations. Both were ministers close to Boris Johnson.

We had a vote to add an extension if we still have no deal agreed at the end of next week to the Withdrawal Bill. May has said she will do this anyway; this would merely tie her hands. It passed by 5 votes. It now is fast tracked to the committee stage and third reading.

A business of the house amendment by Benn to secure a debate and Indicative Vote 3 next week failed after a speakers vote. Bercow followed convention and didn't create a majority where there was not one (though under Erskine May he is free to do the opposite at his discretion).

Corbyn has met May for talks which have been described as construction, though we have no further details though curiously Emily Thornberry put out a statement demanding a ref on whatever was decided which suggests Corbyn isn't keen on the idea. Rumours are of Schrodingers Customs Union: somehow being in a union but not a union. It can't be called a customs union. And Liam Fox has said Corbyn can't have his union. Though he may have a vested interest as he loses his job if Corbyn gets his way.

Oh and the Commons photocopier broke so no one knows what is currently supposed to be happening.

Otherwise it's been a quiet day, all things considered. Too quiet?

Giving up and going to bed.

I actually don't particularly want this bill to pass. I'm happy to have an extension, PV, Revoke, common market 2.0 or CU or CU+SM. Pretty much anything except No Deal. But I think legislation hastily drafted and passed does have a tendency to bite back. And it does seem this has been rapidly and poorly drafted. MPs should not, frankly, be passing a bill / amendments which they have only had access to for a couple of days / hours. The process really does matter (to me).

Unescorted · 03/04/2019 20:52

Bill Cash is not doing my blood pressure any good. Bring back Anne Main.

Sostenueto · 03/04/2019 20:54

Thank you bigchoc and dreich for support its well appreciated. Flowers

Unescorted · 03/04/2019 20:55

Cordilliaa I wish that thought had been around when A50 was triggered with no consideration to the position it put us in. It was legislation by headline. This at least is trying to give us a little more time to get our shit together.

Belindabelle · 03/04/2019 20:55

BercowsSilkTie they are trying to pass Yvette Coopers bill in one day. A bill has two readings (which we have had) then goes to committee (which is going on at the moment) then comes back for a third reading. Which will happen soon after this committee shenanigans. Then tomorrow this bill will go to the Lords. I think.

For pp upthread asking about extension:

The EU Council decision was that on 10 April they would consider an extension IFF

  • Legislation has been passed for EP elections
  • May has reportedly promised an Order In Council to do this, hence no vote needed ✅

AND

  • EITHER the WA has been passed OR May indicates she intends more than extended dithering Hmm
  • if talks with Corbyn are still going, or they have a basic agreement of how to proceed, that should be sufficient grounds for a long extension,
because the EU have been wanting her to get cross-party buy-in - building consensus again
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 03/04/2019 20:56

It’s the 18B a year we pay the EU multiplied by 5 if we extend for 5 years, horseshit.

TalkinPaece · 03/04/2019 20:57

Sorry folks, nothing now persuades me that reality is not the only way to persuade

Sostenueto · 03/04/2019 20:57

Well I'm off to watch ' motherfatherson' see u tomorrow.Wine

CordeliaEarhart · 03/04/2019 20:59

unescorted, undue haste in triggering A50 cannot be remedied by undue haste in passing further legislation imo.

Arg! Cash is so bloody awful!

woman19 · 03/04/2019 21:00

So instead, Cooper gave it her best shot with requiring May to request an extension - which at least has a chance of being granted

I really like Cooper, but according to Jo Maugham her request was legally very flawed.

Cherry's was water tight.

I'd love these so called 'hard remainers' to have the power you seem to ascribe to them.

Do you think that all of the Labour abstainers on Cooper were 'hard remainers'? The Cuks are tiny. You're blaming 'hard remainers' for a crash out, which despite the legal integrity of Cooper's intended legislation, is for sure the game plan that May etc have been sticking to for over a year?

Seems a bit harsh.

Get well soon red. Sending virtual chicken soup. (check it out, you can get it in Manchester, Wink)

Late joining. Nothing helpful to say...
Thanks Red

horseshit · 03/04/2019 21:01

Rafals Thanks, that’s what I thought it meant but had to mute the TV before throwing a wine bottle at it.

AutumnCrow · 03/04/2019 21:01

As Joanna Cherry said at the start of the day, the Bill extraordinaire is before the House of Commons because the House is in extremis.

QueenMabby · 03/04/2019 21:01

Have had to mute Cash. Did he reallly go there on the “we saved Europe twice” drivel??

woman19 · 03/04/2019 21:01

I don't believe May ever had any good faith intention of getting the WA passed. That's why it is what it is. brexit always meant crash out.

QueenMabby · 03/04/2019 21:02

Pure hubris from him (sorry - pressed post too soon).

tobee · 03/04/2019 21:02

Is this filibustering? Or what? Trying to guess by looking and not turning sound up.

golondrina · 03/04/2019 21:02

PMK

Wonnacott35 · 03/04/2019 21:03

I think she's sabotaged it from the beginning and is hoping for a revoke. I hope that's what she's doing and she gets her way

HazardGhost · 03/04/2019 21:03

sos hope you've reported any personal insults. Don't let it bother you. ❤

horseshit · 03/04/2019 21:03

Poor Billy, he personally saved Europe twice from the Germans only to be leashed, gagged and whipped by Angela Merkel herself :(

AutumnCrow · 03/04/2019 21:04

Bill Cash has finally shown his true colours.
