Why do Rees-Mogg and the ERG want no deal so much when it will screw up the country?

I don't understand why, given the economic damage no deal will cause, they are so keen on it.

Is it purely about free market economics?

Can anyone explain?

Because No Deal is closer to a clear-break Brexit than the Withdrawal Agreement which all accept is a compromise.

Because they're going to be fine. They know it will cause misery to millions, but they see that as a reasonable price to pay for freedom from the EU. They truly don't give a shiny shite about those who will suffer.

As a fellow Catholic, I'm appalled at Rees-Mogg using our religious belief as justification for some awful things but conveniently forgetting it over things like this. He's a hypocrite.

Because when food is so expensive normal people can't afford it, he can.

Because when people are in so much need of money to pay for even just the basics, he will profit from regular people working too many hours for not enough money in unsafe conditions.

Because while your average UK citizens will have to work every hour under the sun to pay for education and their health care (once it's all privatised) he doesn't have to worry about that.

He will pay less tax once there is no NHS and no state education. He will still have health care and education.

There is no good argument for a no deal Brexit. Anyone who promotes it is either lying for their own selfish reasons, or doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.

Their belief in the UK being free from EU regulation trumps any concern about the economic well-being of the UK and it’s citizens. They believe the ability to make our own trade deals will result in better ones than those negotiated by the EU and we will be free from the EU’s laws and requirements in a broader sense, eg courts, law making, monetary policies etc. In other words we regain control of our own destiny. So no, it’s not just about free market economics. It’s a much wider philosophical argument whilst also supporting less immigration from EU countries and reducing payments to the EU.

The problem, as many are now discovering, is that the people likely to be doing future deals are incompetent. Boris anyone?! Heaven help us! It’s not entirely their fault of course. The EU has trade deals with every major trading partner worldwide. They are used to negotiating. It’s an expertise that, in effect, we pay for. We have gained from it. We have not always been able to take full advantage of the trading arrangements and we should definitely wonder why Germany sells 6 X what we do to China for example. How will freedom improve this if the Chinese don’t want our goods? We may well find some countries are not that bothered about negotiating anything!

Essentially the ERG don’t believe Brexit will damage anything. They are deluded and believe the UK is far more influential than it is. I do believe, however, that the ERG have been shocked that the EU has been far more resolute and better at negotiating than we are. They have way more experience and I think they will have far more clout at any further negotiations. There are 27 of them and the Rees Moggs have found them united when their rhetoric says they are falling apart. They are not.

I dont know any off the top of my head but one assumes they must exist

But I doubt there are as many pro no deal arguments as remain ones

When you are rich enough to have more money than you can 'use' during your, and your children's lifetime, manipulating money is a pleasant pastime, a form of posh gambling but with (mostly) other peoples money.
'Betting' that currency will either rise or fall, especially if you have an inside lead, where you know a particular announcement is coming up is almost like knowing which of say 2 horses will win the Derby.
The value of the Pound jumped about 1% in the 10 minutes when T May made her speech in Salzburg last year. Having a good idea of what she was going to say, and the likely market reaction is most of what you need to make money.

Some of the ERG, or friends of some of the ERG live in a different world to most of us and some players are clever or at least have influential connections. The public faces we see, JRM etc MAY be clever themselves or may just be good at saying one thing and doing another. Having money buys a degree of anonymity so it is very difficult to tell.
Farage was and possibly is a gold trader with connections, I think reaching to Russia and other places. Again this is a world few actually see.
