Why do Rees-Mogg and the ERG want no deal so much when it will screw up the country?

I don't understand why, given the economic damage no deal will cause, they are so keen on it.

Is it purely about free market economics?

Can anyone explain?

A world hidden from us. And goodness knows what world hidden from us in the EU.
You think some of our politicians are corrupted and self serving but somehow EU politicians , are graced with pure in human qualities blessed to be perfect ,honest politicians who cherish and love us all and make the best descions for us all.

You dislike Mogg and yet don't think there's a whole gravy train of similar in the EU?

TheGhostOfBrexit · 28/03/2019 21:46

Disaster Capitalism coupled with I'm alright Jack arrogance and a complete disregard for their fellow man.

bellinisurge · 28/03/2019 21:47

Rees-Mogg's Dad literally wrote the book on disaster capitalism. It's not just a tired old slur like Rees-Mogg is a contemptible fucking wanker. It's an actual thing.

ContinuityError · 28/03/2019 21:48

Like father like son ...

Bluntness100 · 28/03/2019 21:51

Rees mogg has always been a rebel and his politics have always been dodgy, he is against abortion for any reason, and I mean for any reason, even medical grounds, and he is against same sex marriage and ashamed we have legalised it too, he is a thoroughly despicable character. In terms of immigration he makes Nigel Farage look moderate.

Unpleasant man. And incredibly wealthy, I think him and his wife are worth about 150 million, and he has made a career out of opposing the government.

As said, he's a deeply unpleasant character. Take some time to read up on him. Very few peoole will like what they find out.

Burpsandfustles · 28/03/2019 21:52

Oh goodness!

Do you think the EU economists were following disaster capitalism when they pushed for the states to be chained together by the euro?
Are they laughing whilst once bouncy nations solvency goes down the pan!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/03/2019 21:53

150 mil bluntness?

Cripes!

Bluntness100 · 28/03/2019 21:57

Yes, I read it awhile ago, his wife is worth approx 100 million or something and him 50. They are super elite financially,

And as said, he has some very very unpleasant views. On everything from homosexuality to abortion to immigration, and he doesn't hide it,

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/03/2019 22:03

Blimey!

RussellSprout · 28/03/2019 22:09

I find there's something beguiling about JRM, in his evil Tory ways.

How the heck did he gain Mhairi Black's approval/affection, they are practically best pals it would seem.

What

Like the mustache twirling villain in a victorian melodrama? Grin

Tonsilss · 28/03/2019 22:45

So some Brexiters think that the politicians of the other EU states are deliberately wrecking their countries for personal profit and fun? Last time I looked, Angela Merkel didn't seem to be doing that.

Drizzlehair · 28/03/2019 23:50

I posted on another thread today, but adding her because I detest rees mog (and refuse to capitalise his name or spell it right. That'll learn him...)

He may play the Catholic card and be all against abortion in any circumstances but he's perfectly happy to get rich selling abortion pills in poor countries.

Hypocritical scumbag

He really is high up on my scumbag list. He is practically the only person alive I'd less rather have as pm than boris.

A friend used to overlap at uni with his sister (she was keen to tell me they definitely weren't friends) and she assures me the sister is a really nasty person too. I'm very unsurprised.

How do these people seriously describe themselves as good catholics?

I've got myself all worked up when I should be sleeping Angry

lonelyplanetmum · 29/03/2019 00:04

*Beguiling?
*
Reviling more like. Looked at his vile voting record?

https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/24926/jacobrees-mogg/northheastsomerset/votes

Christian huh? Reduction in benefits. Reduction in housing, welfare, disability stuff

But no tax increases for those earning over £150k. Cuttting corporation tax Etc etc.

Really look at it...

TheGhostOfBrexit · 29/03/2019 00:17

Aye...there is nothing of charitable about JRM...not in the Christian faith sense, or any other, for that matter...

Emilyontmoor · 29/03/2019 00:25

I witnessed Farage being the sad laughable drunken bigot at the bar in a pub by Leadenhall market in the 1980s from midday every day and through the afternoon , sad hangover from the time when people, be they elite, Kent or Essex, could get on in the city on family connections and then spend half the day in the pub. Never occurred to me to take him as anything but a saddo. Not saying the city is better now but at least you need a brain and to put in the hours. A bit of a Kate Atkinson moment, maybe I could have changed history.....

notangelinajolie · 29/03/2019 01:32

Because Brexit is no deal.

Butterymuffin · 29/03/2019 02:11

I think you'll find Brexit means Brexit! So conveniently that can mean whatever anyone wants it. Not so great when it comes to nailing it down in legislation though.

JRM is a deeply unpleasant character. Apart from everything that's already been mentioned, he's also one of those crappy fathers that has never changed a nappy and is really proud of it.

EluphNaugeMeop · 29/03/2019 03:00

It is vitally important to Rees-Mogg that we are out of Europe by the end of 2019. New EU anti tax avoidance legislation started being applied a few weeks ago in January 2019 but won't be fully implemented across all complex scenarios until 01 January 2020. JRM and his ilk need Brexit to be hard and fast enough to remove this danger to their personal wealth. Any delay, or treaty keeping us in sufficient regulatory union to make this legislation still apply post-Brexit, will cost millions in tax that was previously avoidable.

lonelyplanetmum · 29/03/2019 06:35

How Jacob Rees-Mogg voted on Welfare and Benefits
• Consistently voted for reducing housing benefit for social tenants deemed to have excess bedrooms (which Labour describe as the "bedroom tax")
• Consistently voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices
• Consistently voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability
• Consistently voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits

lonelyplanetmum · 29/03/2019 06:37

How Jacob Rees-Mogg voted on Taxation and Employment

    • • Almost always voted for reducing the rate of corporation tax
      • Almost always voted for increasing the rate of VAT
      • Almost always voted for higher taxes on plane tickets

      • Consistently voted against increasing the tax rate applied to income over £150,000

      • Almost always voted against a banker’s bonus tax

      • Consistently voted against an annual tax on the value of expensive homes (popularly known as a mansion tax)

lonelyplanetmum · 29/03/2019 06:39

How Jacob Rees-Mogg voted on Social Issues
• Consistently voted against equal gay rights
• Consistently voted against smoking bans
• Consistently voted against allowing marriage between two people of same sex

havingtochangeusernameagain · 29/03/2019 07:57

How the heck did he gain Mhairi Black's approval/affection, they are practically best pals it would seem

David Allen Green said he knew him at uni (?) and he was a pleasant enough character. So it seems he can get on with people despite his views.

My MP (state school educated so nowhere near as rich as JRM) also voted for no deal, and also against LGBT education. Even JRM didn't vote against the latter, though he may have abstained.

Are we a 'bouncy nation'? Serious question. I don't know whether to be worried or not.
