Westminstenders: Flextension

Just wrote an intro and wiped it. So this is as quick as I can sum up.

EU response is extension to 22nd May if May passes her deal by 29th March

Or an unconditional extension to 12 April which could be extended with a plan and understanding to take part in EU elections.

This isn't what may wanted. It gives her less time and leverage

It opens up the possibility of her being ousted as PM in the next couple of days. Graham Brady asked her to quit on Monday. Remain Cabinet ministers are threatening to quit if May whips a vote to support no deal.

The talk is May has indeed flipped to supporting no deal with many think she's pretty much gone full on Colonel Kurtz.

The EU are in effect supporting parliamentary sovereignty and are being incredibly reasonable.

May now has to decide whether to accept.

The whole situation looks explosive and likely that one half of the cabinet or the other are on the brink of walking. And May's power is so shattered.

However she remains the gatekeeper and as it stands if she's hell bent on no deal, it will be extremely difficult for Parliament to prevent that.

I usually use google maps for road closure or delay, it was useful in the snow.
This one, though a bit clunky, gives reasons for delay and estimated time to reopening.

An LBC caller supporting 'Leave means Leave' (Mike from York?) appeared to suggest to Shelagh Fogarty abour an hour ago that lots of leavers had boxes of leaflets in garages ready to distribute after 29th if we have not left and that these were calling for possibly violent action against MPs?

Could not dig into this due to after school stuff, could this be true?

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 16:16

If its Mueller come visiting or sending a taxi the timing could not be worse for May

I would hope our own - much vaunted - security services had the advance scoop on this. Otherwise (quite seriously) what's the point of them ? We spend a fucktonne on GCHQ, so it would be nice to have something to show for it.

Of course whether they would tell May is another question ...

(Speaking of questions, I wonder if it's automatic the PM gets the highest possible security clearance. After all it seems Wilson didn't ....)

This gossip about Vince from New Statesman
www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2019/03/commons-confidential-why-vince-cable-snapped

Lib Dem staff are launching a covert ABC campaign – Anyone But Charmless – with resignations predicted should the brusque Jo “charmless” Swinson replace Vince Cable. My snout claims the Karl Marx of Twickenham was driven to despair by his deputy. I’m told he secretly favours Oxford’s Layla Moran.

It's a bit rich. It also hints of a lot of unrest at LDHQ...

I note here that this would suit New Statesmans editorial but there's plenty out there to suggest the LDs really do have massive problems atm.

Could not dig into this due to after school stuff, could this be true?

Considering their normal abilities to organise things - probably not. But even if it were - anybody handing out such leaflets could expect to be arrested in pretty short order.
Most probably just ridiculous hot air, threats and bluster from a leaver watching it all crumble in front of his eyes.

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 16:21

As they're unlikely to have brown skin, that's alright ....

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 16:28

Of course whether they would tell May is another question

I'm guessing that May would know they were here. But not necessarily why. It would depend on who was being talked to / picked up / other explaination and why.

The thing about Mueller is how intertwined senior Tories seem to be with certain people deeply involved in the enquiry. May as Home Sec would also have responsibility over certain aspects going back some years (remember the Steeple dossier?). Then there's stuff like Cambridge Analytica. And it's relationship with Leave.

People have said previously 'why hasn't May looked into things connected to Mueller?' for a long time.

And there's been questions about whether May 'helped to cover up' things perhaps she shouldn't and questions over poor judgment (see @mrharrycole pinned tweet for an example). And how Russians were issued visas despite quite large questions about the source of their incomes.

If it is indeed Mueller, it's hard to see how May's reputation comes out well from it. That IF is a big one. But if is right, by god we haven't seen anything yet in terms of crisis and scandal.

Could someone please spell out to me, an idiot, what the thing about the plane is?

yolofish · 22/03/2019 16:37

I had emails from both Heidi Allen and Anna Soubry (not a constituent of either) and was actually quite touched - like bercows. It felt like someone is listening... my MP is that prat Damian Collins, I've met him socially, he is your typical red-trousered Tim Nice But Dim. Actually, maybe leave out the 'Nice' bit.

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 16:38

Reason enough to keep her out of the loop now.

It's all a bit "Brotherhood of the Bell" isn't it. (and if anyone else can find a more obscure cult reference, then please keep it to yourself Grin )

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 16:39

Can some one please explain the mueller thing?

A US department of justice plane which is notorious for being used to pick up significant individuals has been spotted in the UK. It has a long history having previously been used in picking up suspects in the rendition scandal and more recently the extradition of a Russian hacker from Prague.

The fact its in the UK raises a lot of questions. Anything from DoJ officials on a sensitive trip to talk to someone or about something or to pick up someone.

It's not 'insignificant'.

Whether it relates to Mueller or something else entirely is another matter. It's been noticed (and it would be by other nations as its not very secret) by plane spotters at Luton and on radar.

So whatever it is, its probably something to file under Very Important Things Are Happening. And that's really about as far in actual substance you can go.

Beyond that, it's speculative. But interesting. And Carole has got VERY excited about it.

Ok thanks red!

phpolly · 22/03/2019 16:41

DGR I acknowledge all the good arguments to be made about separating the art from the artist. However, I find that once you know something, it's difficult not to let it affect your opinion and of course impossible to un-know it. I don't hear Wagner without thinking of Hitler.
I was sorry to see that video clip of Roger Daltrey (even though I was never a huge Who fan).

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 16:42

And yeah if I was May, with everything on my plate right now, I'm guessing regardless of whether she's in the loop or outside the loop, just about the last thing she'd want right now would be THAT particular plane on UK soil because it has 'another political headache to deal with' emblazoned down the side of it in flashing neon lights.

WhatdoImean · 22/03/2019 16:42

I think it might be to do with Julian Assange.... Perhaps he has come out of the embassy?

I wish it were for Farage or his ilk, but I do not think we are that lucky!

phpolly · 22/03/2019 16:42

Any possibility that the Mueller plane is here for Arron Banks??

WhatdoImean · 22/03/2019 16:42

The plane that is :-)

TalkinPaece · 22/03/2019 16:43

Just because Jonathon Pie does rants nearly as well as Malcolm Tucker

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:45

I have literally no idea what people are talking about. Googling isn't helping

phpolly · 22/03/2019 16:49

Stealth re Mueller, you mean?
This link might be helpful: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Counsel_investigation_(2017–present)

tobee · 22/03/2019 16:49

I heard Assange too.

Layla Moran is an idiot.

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 16:52

I think it might be to do with Julian Assange.

Assange belongs to the UK first, Sweden second, and the US ... well not at all, until an extradition request is presented.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 16:53

I have literally no idea what people are talking about. Googling isn't helping

Honestly don't worry. It's getting into the realms of pure speculation mostly right now. Though that plane won't be here for no reason at all and that's precisely why its so intriguing and touches on the best conspiracy theory you can dream up.

I wonder if it's the DoJ come to pick up the Evil Bond Villain Phillip May himself. Woohahhaha (This is intended as comedy BTW)

StealthPolarBear · 22/03/2019 16:54

What plane? There is nothing on the news about any plane. This is what I mean, I have literally no idea.

Brexshitfuuuuuuuck · 22/03/2019 16:54

Who's Carol?
