Westminstenders: Flextension

Just wrote an intro and wiped it. So this is as quick as I can sum up.

EU response is extension to 22nd May if May passes her deal by 29th March

Or an unconditional extension to 12 April which could be extended with a plan and understanding to take part in EU elections.

This isn't what may wanted. It gives her less time and leverage

It opens up the possibility of her being ousted as PM in the next couple of days. Graham Brady asked her to quit on Monday. Remain Cabinet ministers are threatening to quit if May whips a vote to support no deal.

The talk is May has indeed flipped to supporting no deal with many think she's pretty much gone full on Colonel Kurtz.

The EU are in effect supporting parliamentary sovereignty and are being incredibly reasonable.

May now has to decide whether to accept.

The whole situation looks explosive and likely that one half of the cabinet or the other are on the brink of walking. And May's power is so shattered.

However she remains the gatekeeper and as it stands if she's hell bent on no deal, it will be extremely difficult for Parliament to prevent that.

you can book an NCP car parking space eg: Portman Square by Hyde Park in advance online

You’ll be lucky to get a car that close tomorrow

You'd have to pay congestion charge as well obvs.

There’s no congestion charge at the weekend

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2019 08:38

Chevvy, when you say happy to drop off, do you mean on the outskirts, i.e. Barnet, for instance, or nearer to the march. The congestion zone really is quite central, IIRC, but I've also not been for a while. The TFL website says it's not applicable at weekends anyway.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 22/03/2019 08:39

There’s no congestion charge at the weekend

Oh yeah, true.

I don't drive into London, as you can see Grin

I need more coffee.

golondrina · 22/03/2019 08:39

England could end up a lot like NI was in bad times if we do not tread very carefully. Unfortunately nobody is treading carefully....

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 08:39

Don't forget we've also had Andrew Lilico openly saying that revoking is a trap for far right fascism and political destabilisation more or less openly too. This isn't me being hysterical here. It's the stated political goal of a minority.

PMK but i have to say, I’m struggling to follow! Shock

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 08:41

ESTRAGON: Well, shall we leave on 29 March 2019?
VLADIMIR: Yes, let's leave on 29 March 2019.
(They do not leave on 29 March 2019.)*

And funnily enough it was written originally in French, about 2 years before Beckett (Irish, let's not forget) rewrote it in English. How very European! 😀

67chevvyimpala · 22/03/2019 08:50

I'm looking at the ncp site - anyone uses it?
Quite a few spaces still available to book...

QueenMabby · 22/03/2019 08:51

PMK with a confession that I have not read any of this thread yet but wanted to get my place in before I blink and we’re at 40 pages!
Altogether now....and FLEX!

prettybird · 22/03/2019 08:52

Chevy - the congestion charge doesn't apply at the weekend, so that's one less thing to worry about. Smile

It surprised me when we drove down to see the Saracens-Glasgow rugby game in January.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2019 08:54

Chevvy, I've found Just Park to give cheaper parking in the same car parks rather than go direct to NCP.

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 08:54

.

woman19 · 22/03/2019 08:59

Thanks songs I didn't know that he originally wrote it in French......

For relief from the stress of all this can I recommend Simon Mayo's new radio station Scala. I wonder if he's deliberately set it up with all this in mind (to calm shattered nerves and to bring people together) partially funded by the makers of the new, liberal, anti racist Tim Burton version of Dumbo.

Which comes out on .......29.3.19.Wink

wheresmymojo · 22/03/2019 08:59

As always, apologies if duplicating....these lighter moments from the EU conference made me snigger this morning

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 22/03/2019 09:02

Then we need Derren Brown! Battle Of The Hypnotists! grin

Tanith I was just going to say the same thing and not even half joking! I had some very minor dealings with Darren Brown via work a few years ago. He seemed like a thoroughly decent person and I’d instinctively pick him for a Remainer. I reckon if it came to it he could totally take McKenna down Grin

On an unrelated and, to everyone else, irrelevant note, staying at in-laws for a few days. DMiL made a delicious and huge sausage casserole last night, the remains of which she left out of the fridge all night. It’s bound to get served up again at some point. I’m worried we’re all going to die (or at the least I’ll be rendered incapable of marching or driving home depending on when we eat it ) Envy Not envy.

Bearbehind · 22/03/2019 09:06

I really would avoid prebooking any parking too close to the march route.

The main roads (Piccadilly etc) will get closed so moving around becomes very difficult.

I went on the one in October and we didn’t move from Hyde Park corner for about 2 hours because there were so many people ahead of us.

Pick a car park away from the route and walk in / use the tube.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 09:07

Men in yellow vests out in force in my part of Kent this morning. 3 roads closed around dd's school and 'emergency electrical works' on several roads Hmm

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/03/2019 09:09

Re hypnotists - I was going on remembering a show of his he did at my ex's university. One of my ex's housemates was hypnotised and he did all sorts of silly things on stage and then was 'woken up'. But I suspect it doesn't all effect the same motor functions and some is deeper.

Horehound · 22/03/2019 09:10

I'd be suitably embarrassed going abroad as I was after the referendum
To be fair, the Scottish and Northern Irish dont have to be embarrassed just the English. And well, Europe already had a crappy opinion of them anyway. Wink

TatianaLarina · 22/03/2019 09:14

According to Telegraph - Gove is emerging as frontrunner to supersede May.

And from the article last night, looks like the men in grey suits may be knocking on May’s door.

icannotremember · 22/03/2019 09:14

Singing my DH is similarly cavalier about the need to refrigerate leftovers. Three days in he'll still be eating from the pan that's sat on the hob breeding bacteria, astonished that no one else wants any. In his pre vegan days he sometimes ate raw meat though. I suspect he's got iron guts.

wherearemychickens · 22/03/2019 09:20

I was saying to my DH last night that my money would be on Gove

OogieMcBoogie · 22/03/2019 09:23

Is Gove likely to want to avoid no deal?

Peregrina · 22/03/2019 09:26

Chevvy - we sometimes park in places towards the end of the Underground like Hillingdon and then get the Tube in. Hillingdon used to have cheap parking for the day although I haven't been there very recently so I don't know if that's still the case. I don't know about the other stations, or if that can be looked up, but it's an alternative.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 09:26

I think Labour are trying to get an urgent question in the HoC to get a statement on the extension of A50.
