This morning Jeremy Hunt declared that, 'With vision on both sides we can find a way through that has the support of Parliament and also works for the EU'

Of course this is 18th February 2019 and the UK has yet to demostrate they understand the problem, much less have the vision to solve it. And we leave the EU next month.

It needs to be stressed at this point: DON'T FORGET TO FOCUS ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Everything else is a tactic to make you close your eyes and miss what is really going on. Everything. Brexit looks increasingly like a hypnotist making their subject do ever increasing acts of ridiculousness on stage. Except I do not know if the public or the politicians are that poor sod. It is the magician who uses tricks of slight of hand to make you look the wrong way, whilst they makes all the big moves out of your vision.

There are so many stories that are coming out to try and make you miss what the government are failing to do. Stay focused. We can't ignore all these stories, but understand whether they are really important to the end game too.

A labour split, a march on the 23rd March, talk of a PV, the Brady amendment, the Malthouse Compromise, Cooper-Boles halting no deal?

No we need more than that.

The time for fantasies are gone. Its time to face reality and be pragmatic. The only thing that matters is the approaching cliff. Which we will go over not on the 29th March but in the next couple of weeks. We might not realise the ground disappearing beneath our feet at first. Our momentum as we go forward will carry for a short while before gravity kicks in.

But we can not defy the laws of physics and suddenly be able to fly because we develop magic superhuman powers of vision.

And no one will come to save us either.

Our national humilation will be total, if we don't acknowledge what is coming and stop.

That Junket quote is interesting. Do the EU think the tide is turning in the UK?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2019 20:58

So next instalment tomorrow?

#BREAKING -- @JunckerEU: If UK requested extension to #Brexit talks, nobody in Europe would oppose it; No time-frame in mind for length of Brexit extension.

There's a saying about being nice to a man before you kill them.

I suspect Juncker is confident the UK will not ask for an extension ....

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:02

If a few Tories also quit their party, this could have been the turning point, the opportunity for an Opposition leader of average competence to leverage

.... but we have dimwit Corbyn, who wants to ride Brexit to his own victory, like Dr Strangelove riding astride his nuke.

Woah extraneous 'is'
As you were

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:08

The EU have no real reason to refuse an extension to 1 June

  • it gives them extra time for prepping and they want to show they've given the UK govt every possible chance to sort itself out

I doubt if Juncker can be confident about a longer extension though, unless for a PV

RedToothBrush · 18/02/2019 21:09

Woke = virtue signalling you have a very shallow grasp of a subject involving diversity and equality in order to look cool to your peers.

I suspect Juncker is confident the UK will not ask for an extension ....

Especially if he personally, says "The UK can have an extension with zero catches or strings what so ever", because these fuckwits are so cantankerous they will literally disagree with any proposal suggested by the evil fascist called Junker

This news is only a surprise if you rely on British news for your information

RedToothBrush · 18/02/2019 21:11

It came as Anna Soubry sparked speculation she is preparing to jump ship after removing a Conservative Party slogan from her social media profile.

The Tory Remainer removed all reference to her party from her Twitter biography, referring to herself simply as ‘MP for Broxtowe’ having previously described herself as a ‘lifelong One Nation Tory’.

There is no such thing as a One Nation Tory anymore.

I'd believe there's more than a grain of truth in that. I'm reminded of some parenting tricks when DS was younger ....

frumpety · 18/02/2019 21:14

39 days to go, I thought even Evan Davies sounded quite cross on R4 tonight talking to some weasel about Honda. The thing I wonder about all these closures is , if they happen after B-day and if we have left with no deal, could that effect redundancy pay outs ?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:15

Difficult to imagine the UK govt asking for an extension - atm, the only grounds would be that the UK can't make up its mind what it wants Hmm

They'd have to lie and invent some waffly grounds, to fool the public, but that wouldn't fool the EU of course.

Even if the govt did ask, I expect they'd run out of time trying to decide how long an extension they need

PestyMachtubernahme · 18/02/2019 21:16

I did see an interview with Frans Timmermans about a month ago. He said of course the EU27 would sign an extension. It was his job to keep everyone up to date and on board (even if some were a little reluctant). He also said the EU would want a suitable reason, no just more can kicking. Have failed to find it again.

Labour are getting a wee bit Stalinist on twitter and we have long known the tories are heading rapidly towards neo-fascism. Maybe a new middle party is just what we need. Especially if they are called TIGgers Grin

Efferlunt · 18/02/2019 21:22

Brexit has really turned most things I believed in on their head.

I used to believe we had a strong constitution that just sort of worked even if it was uncodified

I used to believe that while you could disagree with a lot of the ideology driving some politicians most genuinely believed that what they were doing was the best thing for the country.

I also used to believe that the BBC balanced reporting was a good idea not something that gave a platform to extreme views.

If this allcalms down in a few years there has to be a reckoning where we remake our institutions because they have failed us.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:24

frumpety afaik it shouldn't affect the amount of redundancy.

Unless Honda and the others wait for the govt to start their Bonfire of Red Tape,
which might include abolishing statutory redundancy pay

Even now, it's hardly a fortune:
maximum £15,240 and that's usually only if you're earning above average pay and have worked there for many years
Most payments in practice are far less.

RedToothBrush · 18/02/2019 21:24

I will vote for anyone with a pulse who does not demonstrate authoritarian leanings and extreme views.

Not fussy. Man, woman, goat. The Elvis and Himalayan Yeti Preservation Party or the Lord Buckethead Party.

On the basis that an extension requires all EU27 to agree to it (?) I wonder if the Spanish 'sabre rattling' is related. Mr Junker saying an extension is possible, but Spain strongly hinting it may get vetoed?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:32

Efferlunt This struck me when I was looking at that photo of Hunt with his full title on his name plate:

The UK has this very impressive system of elaborate titles, pageantry, "men in black tights", robes etc
and we keep patting ourselves on the back about the spectacle it all makes
and how everyone envies our BBC and our royal Family

... but it's just a spectacle, nothing more

Brexit has shown the British Constitution, Parliament, the pageantry .... are just a show covering up that there is nothing useful any more underneath all that
just a dark & grimy cellar with rats running around, some of them rabid.

Littlespaces · 18/02/2019 21:33

I like the nickname Tigger Party. Sounds enthusiastic.

TalkinPeece · 18/02/2019 21:36

Labour readmitted Derek Hatton today.
Proof if it was ever needed that Corbyn lives in an echo chamber

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2019 21:37

LeClerc Any longer extension affecting the EP elections and the previously allocated British MEP seats could come with conditions
e.g. for a PV, that it might have to be Remain vs WA - no option of No Deal, no changes to the WA

If there isn't a PV, then members might require considerable inducement to give this longer extension.
That might even include paying some of the EU's extra costs for setting up new Customs & border systems
Or concessions on fishing
