Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

IDoN0tCare I'm not even kidding here but we did actually eat them over candle light!!

The light blew just before tea & I realised we'd run out of lightbulbs (note to self: stock up on lightbulbs Grin )

First impressions of the tinned sprouts were not great, odd smell & colour, I steamed them then put butter (vitalite) on them & tried one. Tasted ok so dished them up. They seemed to get more bitter as they went on & I didn't finish mine. DH finished his & thought they were ok but I wouldn't buy them again, not even to put with mash for colcannon or bubble & squeak. They were also VERY soft Confused

I grew them last year for a test and had them at Christmas. Grin
I'll do it again this year.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2019 07:24

Thanks for the tip on getting DF spread from Aldi Noword. I'm DF too and just happen to have a trip to Aldi today Smile

NoWordForFluffy · 16/02/2019 08:05

Did I say Aldi? I meant Home Bargains if I said Aldi, sorry. Blush

I can't find DF free spread in Aldi. Angry

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2019 08:08

Sorry, you may well have said Hone Bargains Blush

NoWordForFluffy · 16/02/2019 08:13

Can you go there too?! Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 16/02/2019 08:25

Went to Iceland yesterday specifically to check out their frozen veg.

Peppers, casserole veg, broccoli, spinach etc and also frozen coriander.

HOWEVER the carrots were shit! Little tiny boys willies which I know would be all slimy and weird when cooked!!

What would happen if I just bought normal carrots, peeled and chopped them and froze??

Or would it be better to par boil then freeze on trays before decanting into bags?

NoWordForFluffy · 16/02/2019 09:34

Normal carrots store well kept dry in a cool place. You'd be better finding somewhere you can buy a sack of them.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/02/2019 09:57

Carrots freeze ok. The ones you do yourself are better than commercial. Every year I freeze carrot and parsnip batons for Christmas dinner roast.

I also freeze the first part of dinners. Prepare and cook the fresh veg and then freeze to be used later by adding, say the chopped tomatoes which store out of the freezer. I have a couple of parsnips I may chop up and parboil.

Broccoli does freeze but gets tainted fairly rapidly so may not be worth it. It is ok once cooked and frozen in sauce though. I am weighing up whether to do this or make sauces later with dried milk/ soya milk and use the freezer for something else.

I am going to be eating up the Brussels as the kids have gone off them and Aldi ones are too bitter for ds.

bellinisurge · 16/02/2019 11:15

Before you freeze fresh veg, blanch it first in boiling water then sling immediately into iced water. I have an old Good Housekeeping book with times but this looks similar

We will have some teething problems and then we will be able to get things moving in again. The problem is going to be exporting. France and Ireland are having to build new facilities and recruit/train new border staff to deal with our exports. Look out especially for the meat industry and luxury fishing industry. And financial services. That's where we'll be fucked.

PrivacyPolicyYeahRight · 16/02/2019 11:44

Can I join? I have just gone out today and bought, in one hit, a weeks worth of tinned/frozen food and spare toiletries/loo roll/san pro/squash/uht milk etc. Was about £70 in all as I hit Lidl. All stuff I will use again. My husband is quite amused but he agrees it needed doing. I feel a bit better now and less anxious.

IDoN0tCare · 16/02/2019 12:03

Anyone can join, PrivacyPolicyYeahRight. Don’t Male my mistake and tell too many about it. I’ve just went out to my shed and found that someone has helped themselves to four large kitchen rolls! Yes, seriously! I keep a strict list of my stock and mark off anything I remove/add. My outside shed is a thing of beauty and my youngest calls of ‘the shop’. 😁 They actually took it from the spot closet to the door, otherwise I might not have noticed. The fact that they only took four, low value items, would suggest that it’s someone I know. I never thought, considering I live well back from the road and it’s cleaning products/toiletries that I keep in it, that I’d have to lock it. You live and learn.

I spoke before about wishing I hadn’t told so many as some people would feel that I was being greedy or unfair to not sell them stuff at the pre Brexit prices, but stealing already! Ffs!

bellinisurge · 16/02/2019 12:04

Nice one. Well done. It helps to have a tad more control if things get bumpy, doesn't it? And if they don't get bumpy, it's stuff you can use.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 16/02/2019 12:04

privacy that's what I did at the beginning of the month. It's such a good way to kick start your prep. Since then I've turned to the freezer, organising it and allocating space for extra meat, bacon and whatever reduced stuff I can pick up. Today I'll be buying a door and shelves for the pantry I'm creating. Then I'll turn to things like batteries, candles etc. Trying to think of it as a new prep way of life

SparklySneakers · 16/02/2019 16:14

That's shit IDoN0tCare. Kitchen rolls seems an odd thing to steal doesn't it. Maybe it was a trial run to see if you'd notice? Hope you've got it all secure now.
I've got another under bed sized storage box now, a couple of pot noodles, cranberry sauce, and 60 Jaffa cakes. The Jaffa cakes might not last the weekend though Grin
Big shop on Tuesday Smile

PrivacyPolicyYeahRight · 16/02/2019 16:19

Ooo I hadn’t thought of batteries and candles! When I started writing my list I actually realised that there is a HUGE amount of stuff I would miss if I couldn’t get it. There is more on my list but I will pick bits up as the month goes on. I’m definitely not a prepper by nature though...it will all be gone once Brexit is all over Wink

PrawnOfCreation · 16/02/2019 16:22

Budget prep top up at Tesco.

20p spaghetti x 5
29p penne x 3
70p oats x 2
45p rice x 2

All in the dry food storage now.

IDoN0tCare · 16/02/2019 16:24

Kitchen rolls seems an odd thing to steal doesn't it. Maybe it was a trial run to see if you'd notice? I was standing there looking at the gap going ehh? 🤔 I had to double check, because I really wondered had I misremembered what was there. Indeed it is very odd. It was those big, thick kitchen rolls, similar to the ‘plenty’ ones. I never thought about it being a test run! I had eight, perfectly fitted on the shelf closest to the door and more at the back of the shed. It’s like they just reached in and grabbed them.

Murinae · 16/02/2019 17:20

I’ve just been and stocked up on chicken food and corn. At least they keep us in eggs. Just the freezer to top up with mince, chicken and sausages to do now.

Murinae · 16/02/2019 17:22

And we got a load of logs delivered from the local tree surgeon though I presume he will still have lots of logs after brexit

IDoN0tCare · 16/02/2019 17:51

It depends if there is a steady supply off coal, *. If there’s any interruptions, then people will need logs.

redhat · 16/02/2019 18:02

Topped up the oil just in case...

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/02/2019 18:47

I am still laying here not putting shopping away. There is a lot of it mostly for half term but some for the stash. 12 flights of stairs to get it all in, and more to put it all away.

I am switching between feeling it is all a bit of a game, like flat Tetris to being incredibly worried thinking there will not be enough to keep going, often many times a day.

PrivacyPolicyYeahRight · 16/02/2019 19:06

Same blackeye, I look at mine and think I could make it last a week maybe. Haven’t money, time, space energy to prep any more than that though
