Westminstenders: Waiting for Sanity

We could be waiting a long time, but that's what we have to wait for as that's what the EU is waiting for.

The EU has requested we expand on our plans for 'alternative arrangements' with regard to the backstop.

We need to do so before the next HoC vote on 14th Feb. The EU see no point in shifting their position before than. And the UK will struggle to provide the info the EU want before then. So there is now some doubt as to whether the vote will go ahead as planned.

About a third of the Cabinet now believe that Brexit will have to be delayed due to legislation not being ready for exit date. However we don't have power over this and we might still exit without it.

There is no Brexit related business next week in the HoC to prevent pesky amendments. The recess has been cancelled but MPs have been told its OK to go on their ski holidays so it's just a PR stunt.

Meanwhile No Deal is in full effect as businesses trigger their exit strategy in the absence of certainty. No Deal is reality for many even if we do have a last minute deal...

We are all about to get poorer. As that's what we voted for.

For true beleavers this has become a religion.

Closer to a sadomasochistic death cult, now.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 18:06

I haven't seen anything about that yet, ballyhoo
but tbh I'm concentrating so much on Brexit news, with occasional forays into Trumping
that I could have esily missed it.

No headlines, anyway

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 18:07

Just as long as the whole of the UK isn't their Waco.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 18:08

Just as long as the whole of the UK isn't their Waco.

Well, oops.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 18:09

Tony Connelly@tconnellyRTE

Here's a thing:
The UK EU Withdrawal Act, which is now law, says this about the Joint Report of Dec 2017:
"Nothing... in this Act authorises regulations which create or facilitate border arrangements between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after exit day...

< but nothing specifically excludes it, either >

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 18:10

James Feltonn@JimMFelton*
Honestly can you imagine literally any other circumstances where officials could say

“there’s a chance there might be putrid piles of waste and pig shit lining the streets next month”
and
half the population says “yeah ok seems fine”.

We’ve lost our minds.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:03

Buteo. The op is obviously a reporter for some rubbish rag or other. Keeping up there rubbish scare mongering and shit stirring daily which sadly mums net are allowing.
Funny they say the policy of mums net is to support others. I’ve yet to see how the ops rubbish helps anyone bar stirring up rubbish that are based purely on a Crystal ball that’s full of shit and guesses.

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 19:05

Someone's been hammering the cooking sherry...

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 19:08

GrinGrin

pointythings · 02/02/2019 19:09

Maryjoyce if you're going to malign RTB who has kept these threads going for over 2 years, posting solidly sourced astute political analysis, supporting intelligent discussion of our situation - can you at least make an effort to do it properly instead of just using a cheap sneer?

If you don't like the Westminstenders threads, hide them.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:11

No I don’t drink thanks. Just find it very very dumb all the guessing and making some of the more worried people more scared than need be when nothing is known at all and it’s just a guess.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:12

Yes 2 years plus of rubbish

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 19:15

That's nice, Mary dear.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 19:18

Wow, somebody's getting awfully riled up Grin

I suppose this sort of content-free sense of betrayal and inchoate rage is very self-affirming for the already-faithful True BeLeavers. Not sure how well it does at recruiting sceptics to the cult, though.

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 19:21

Maryjoyce one thing that is a certainty: we don't have enough time left to pass the necessary legislation for either May's deal or No Deal.

Luckily the EU are making moves to soften the impact.

If our Government are doing similar, please let us (or Nissan) know.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:23

No not riled yet.
Just bored of the same old rubbish daily no common sense and no facts since there are no facts as everything is only a guess been we haven’t left yet.
The fact I voted to leave is irrelevant as pointless guessing gains nothing.

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 19:24

no common sense and no facts

I believe this is what's known as projection.

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:24

Common sense is all parties need to be ready to leave with no deal. It’s in all of our interests.

UnnecessaryFennel · 02/02/2019 19:25

Just bored of the same old rubbish daily no common sense and no facts

Gosh, me too, mary. Funny, that.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 19:25

So very, very, very riled Grin

Maryjoyce · 02/02/2019 19:25

It’s still a crystal ball full of shit. However you call it projection or guessing it’s exactly the same it dosent change by calling it another name

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 19:26

55 days left and no facts as everything is only a guess.

Dunno about you but that scares the shit out of me.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2019 19:27

The government joining in with all this scare-mongering too:

calling up armed forces reserves for 12 months

organising a new 24/7 No Deal emergency organisation of 4,000 civil servants

setting up their own ferry service to bring in essential medicines and food

the health minister boasting he's become the biggest buyer of fridge in the entire world, for medicine prepping

telling supermarkets and pharmaceutical companies to organise at least 6 weeks of emergency stocks

Maybe we're all MI5 agents who've subverted Mumsnet 🤔
< surreptitiously adjusts trenchcoat >

Scandaloso · 02/02/2019 19:27

With your great brain, Mary, it's a shame you're not in charge of proceedings. I would feel much safer with you at the helm.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 19:27

Riley McRiledFace 😂
