Brexit

Do you think cancelling Brexit will grow the far right? Or has the Brexit referendum itself already grown the far right?

Chris Grayling has effectively said that we must go through with Brexit or it will give rise to the far right, is he implying the far right will go away after Brexit is driven though? I actually think the opposite is true, that pushing through Brexit will put more power into the hands of the far right. I voted Remain though and, I know confirmation bias exists and try my best to watch for it. I don't remember so much open hostility towards immigrants before June 2016 .

I was also trying to think of an example in history were ground has been given to the far right, or policy put in place that they are calling for, to the detriment of others (immigrants) and this has eased a situation and the far right agitators have melted away. What do others think? Does Brexit fuel the far right or satisfy it?

Hadn't seen the clip in full before. Woman challenges powerful man. He didn't like it much did he??

GirlsBlouse17 · 14/01/2019 20:50

Nope. She said something bigoted about immigrants.

I just listened to the clip again. I wouldn't call it bigoted. She just asked Gordon Brown what he was going to do about immigration. A concern many people have had . That does not make someone extreme right wing or racist.

Anyway, definition of bigotry - intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself.

I would say there have been many on both sides of the Brexit debate who have shown this

This is what the lady said

"You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're … but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?"

birdsdestiny · 14/01/2019 21:35

I think he did well to hold it in till he got in the car.

I think he did well to hold it in till he got in the car.

Why? Because she told him, the PM, what her concerns were? What her issues were?

I read somewhere that New Labour forgot about its traditional Labour voters.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/01/2019 22:08

Labour: we are interested in your opinions and concerns

No not that one you bigot!!

PutYourBackIntoit · 14/01/2019 22:14

She is from Rochdale. She works for the council with children. She had concerns about the population increasing and asked where the Eastern Europeans are coming from.
I dare say her comments should have triggered a conversation about exactly why she was so concerned. Certainly not GB demanding to know who's fault it was that she had been given access to him. It's disgraceful that he was so angered that he was put in a situation where someone asked him forthright questions, rather than massage his ego.

jasjas1973 · 14/01/2019 22:17

Quite ironic that at the very end, she says her GC are stuck in Australia.... bloody migrant pom's where the hell do they all flock from?

Peregrina · 14/01/2019 22:45

She had a point. Brown wasn't really in a position to say "because Blair messed up" by not putting a stay on the number of E Europeans coming, which other established EU countries did and the UK could have done, and then hopelessly underestimating the numbers who would actually come.

GirlsBlouse17 · 14/01/2019 22:51

I agree Peregrina

birdsdestiny · 15/01/2019 06:04

What question was he going to respond to. Where are the east Europeans flocking from? That's not a question about immmigration. I have literally no idea what anyone could say to that.

GrammarTeacher · 15/01/2019 06:24

It's a question rooted in bigotry. Why would he 'do anything' about Eastern European's flocking to work in this country! After Brexit we will realise how much we needed them. A tad outing if anyone was there but I had reason to be grateful for one of 'them' when my son had an accident in church. But then I treat people has individuals and try as far as I can to avoid judging on mass. The woman was a bigot.
These visits are (or are meant to be) carefully prepared to be wholly positive media opportunities. I suspect Brown (and May on her hideous visit to Scotland) were set up for embarrassment.
