Welcome to 2019.

Bit of a different thread starter; instead of me speculating what are your predictions for the coming year politically? Will be interesting to see how people are viewing things right now.

How is Brexit going to play out?

Who is going to be framed as the scapegoat for whatever scenario you think likely?

What are going to be the biggest political issues that the media / politicians push (as opposed to what the real issues are)?

What is going to be the most shocking thing that will happen either here or abroad?

What will happen with Trump?

Who will be the next Tory leader and when?

Whats on the cards for the various political parties in general?

That Medium article is very scary.

I've written to Theresa May, the Labour Party and my Tory MP since New Year's Day. I don't know what else to do.

Dear God, this thread if just insane. twitter.com/singharj/status/1081208536573595651?s=19

Andrew Adonis is asking that we send an email to the labour party telling them to support a people's vote - there is a template, you just have to click send.

The problem is, since 2017, I have had total radio silence from my local Labour party. On any issue.

My MP has been fantastic (loads of headed replies), as long as you don't use the word "Brexit" (because I've tried). They must have some sort of "grep "Brexit" > /dev/null" going on.

I have used WriteToThem as well. My last missive was to point out that they''ll never get my vote as a Brexit supporting party.

DGRossetti · 04/01/2019 17:02

Surely you can't really go from no boats to running a functioning ferry service in three months.

Why not ? You can go from nothing to running a country in a day.

I'm guessing this is what happens when you dismiss experts ?

This shit's getting real ....

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-46758849

Plans to tackle post-Brexit traffic queues by holding lorries in a disused Kent airport will be tested on Monday, it has been revealed.

More than 100 HGVs will travel the 20-mile route from Manston Airport, near Ramsgate, to the Port of Dover.

(contd)

the only way I get through the day after HMRC and Brexit and Local Government Grin

Manston has been mooted for years
When I was in Dover docks it was planned to use it during the P&O strike
and they always dither about using it rather than Stack

the trouble is that the airlines like to have Manston clear of lorries Smile

less of a problem if planes aren't flying ...

A gentle reminder to everyone to pop over to the Preppers Topic. Lurk. Ask questions. Whatever. You don't have to be a prepper to make some sensible food related preps.
The consumer website for No Deal will go live mid January apparently. Cue lots of coverage in the media and probably a ramping up of anxiety. Possibly stuff being difficult in shops.
If you haven't already thought about it, here's a chance to do it now

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 04/01/2019 17:29

Ok ...having read that article I’m thinking again about putting our savings, which are currently mostly in premium bonds, into euros. I thought about this for ages but couldn’t find a way of opening a Euro count in the U.K. I know some on here have transferred sterling into euros via Transferwise biput I couldn’t really work out what it is. It’s not a bank account as such is it? It feels a bit like your money is just in the ether, which feels a bit scary. I admit I may be being a total idiot...

Manston runway is one of the very very few that is big enough to take any plane .... its the one they would use to bring in a jumbo that has got into difficulties or been hijacked
that applies to stuff going over the UK as well as coming in

When I was in Kent (and DH worked very near there and he and I lived in Deal) it was a common topic of pub conversation "what to use Manston for"

DGRossetti · 04/01/2019 17:42

That would be if hijackers were minded to allow the plane they have hijacked to be sent to an airport of the authorities choice. I presume there must be an equivalent of Chris Grayling in the international terror community, but I suspect that evolutionary pressures mean not too many.

Meanwhile grown-up terrorists know a thing or two.

Anyway plane hijacking went out of fashion when terrorists realised that governments would quite happily shoot down a plane with passengers/hostages on board as a first response. That's before they twigged that the media was doing their job for them ....

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 17:44

True
Probably why they are allowing it to be used as a lorry park.
The A259 is a crap road (apart from the wide straight bit around the old Pfizer plant)
Chaos will ensue if lorries are going to Dover
less so if they go to Ramsgate

DGRossetti · 04/01/2019 17:45

I'm impressed policing and fire concerns were addressed so quickly ...

Presumably already looking for ways to change their name to "Nodeal" ?

Or "No Deal !" (although it would probably mess up a lot of pub bores trivia notes).

Cherrypi · 04/01/2019 17:49

Why are they doing the lorries thing? Is it to make people realise the chaos is not project fear?

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 17:50

Tee hee
In St Margarets (between Deal and Dover) the phone signal says you are in France

DGRossetti · 04/01/2019 17:51

Is there bunting going up in Kent then ?

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 17:51

The Manston test is because its the bit that is not "tried and tested".
East Kent is bad enough on a Friday in July
this will be a whole new level

Some of my old Clearance Agent colleagues are rather rubbing their hands that old skills will suddenly become valuable again.

100 lot JIT groupage is something that no other Port ever handled.
It will be interesting to see how it pans out

That piece as posted by loletta is pretty much where my thoughts and reasonings lie although as noted some of it is getting a little carried away.
It also reminds me to change my spellchecker to English!
