Welcome to 2019.

Bit of a different thread starter; instead of me speculating what are your predictions for the coming year politically? Will be interesting to see how people are viewing things right now.

How is Brexit going to play out?

Who is going to be framed as the scapegoat for whatever scenario you think likely?

What are going to be the biggest political issues that the media / politicians push (as opposed to what the real issues are)?

What is going to be the most shocking thing that will happen either here or abroad?

What will happen with Trump?

Who will be the next Tory leader and when?

Whats on the cards for the various political parties in general?

That amount to visit Venice is 'peanuts' and should be far higher, particularly if it really does get used to maintain Venice. You pay £3 for a cup of hot water and chocolate powder in a National Trust tea room.
From 'Not the Nine o'clock news'. Come home to a real fire, buy a cottage in Wales.

OlennasWimple · 01/01/2019 17:30

We have local and tourist rates here - sometimes there is a huge discrepancy (the local rate is as close to free as dammit), more often it's along the lines of the tourist rate being $10 and the local rate being 10 Local Currency. It helps that we have national ID cards, so it's really easy to implement...

Many years ago I went to cathedrals in France that offer a discounted rate for EU passport holders - another Brexit casualty I hadn't thought of Sad

OlennasWimple · 01/01/2019 17:31

If an HS line is needed, why not down to Cornwall ?

Population (or lack of)

GingerPCatt · 01/01/2019 17:33

PP (sorry can’t remember who) I love your mantra of “bin brexit fix Britain”! I may steal that.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2019 17:34

Someone posted what percentage of tax is local in Germany compared to the UK a while back.

I was shocked by the difference.

It is - in part - due to inequality. It wouldn't be viable in certain places.

But on the other hand the current system is failing them too.

We are dreadful as a nation in terms of strategic planning. Brexit is a symptom of that, not the cause of it.

We do need to have a good rethink of the structure of our taxation system in terms of regionality.

NIMBYs won't like it though.

LeClerc
From the point of view of Venice, they get over half a million cruise ship day visits a year .... at EUR10 a head, that will go a fair way towards balancing the city's budget

Olennas
No ID was needed for the tourist rate - language did the trick !
It was the same in Tanzania

Rosetti
I am a firm believer in local income taxes
but they have to be balanced against some of the dangerous inequalities they can cause (and do cause in the US)

wherearemychickens · 01/01/2019 17:35

It was me Ginger, but I've nicked it from someone on Twitter - but can't remember who! - so can't claim the credit :)

DGRossetti · 01/01/2019 17:35

Less than 3 months to go, and I see Brexit has dropped off the BBC again ...

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2019 17:36

Cornwall might need it after Brexit. All those people who are refused visas for minor issues without appeal won't be able to go to Spain anymore.

The traffic is going to be a special kind of hell.

They'll manage. After all, as we have been told unto death, they knew exactly what they were voting for. Especially now they're getting it.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2019 17:44

Loving the poster on the AIBU thread who reckons there is a trade deal with France already signed Grin

Hasenstein · 01/01/2019 17:44

DRG

"
Barbarossa was launched later than intended thanks to the British effort in the Battle of Britain."

I'd always thought Barbarossa kicked off late because the Germans had to waste unexpected time going into Greece to sort out the mess caused by Mussolini's incompetence there.

Of course, there may have been multiple small causes contributing to the delay.

1tisILeClerc · 01/01/2019 17:53

Ta1kinPeace, or anyone, how much is the London congestion charge, I haven't driven 'inside' since it was introduced?
€10 to go into Venice sounds OK to me and if you consider how much the holidaymakers are putting away in terms of drinks it is hardly anything.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2019 17:59

LeClerc
Congestion Charge is £10 per day. And does not apply on Sundays.
DH just factors it in when he has to work in the zone.
It has finally brought London traffic speeds back up to above Victorian times Smile

1tisILeClerc · 01/01/2019 18:10

Thanks TiP
Suggests that Venice are undervaluing themselves.

1tisILeClerc · 01/01/2019 18:11

{Loving the poster on the AIBU thread who reckons there is a trade deal with France already signed}
I was going to look at that for 'fun' which thread is it please?

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2019 18:15

Popcorn thread

Yes and no.
Congestion Charge applies to people entering London to work
Venice is not a business centre

bellinisurge · 01/01/2019 18:17

It's a cracker that thread. Apparently the poster was told this by a close relative who is high up in government. That in itself tells you all sorts.

SwedishEdith · 01/01/2019 18:23

It's probably David Davis.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2019 18:24

I did not realise how scary I was though ......
I've asked each of the Brexiters simple questions and one by one they have left the thread Grin

TheElementsSong · 01/01/2019 18:28

That thread causes me almost physical pain.

London is pretty much unique in the world. In no other country is 1/6th (thats one in every six ...) of the population live in a single city - let alone the capital.

About a quarter of the population of Portugal live in the Lisbon Metropolitan area.

That thread. Wish I hadn’t looked. Sad

Had a wonderful Christmas with family and was feeling optimistic - but now crashing back down to the reality of 2019.
