An interesting new article from The Guardian re: stockpiling and why it isn’t as easy as the government suggest

Well worth a read and fairly sobering stuff.

Where exactly are companies supposed to put all this extra product? How do they pay for creating it and housing it for months on end?

I remember the worry about getting to work.

prettybird · 29/07/2018 19:47

When the supply chain was disrupted for "just" a couple of days during that Beast from the East this March, there were empty shelves due to the lorries not being able to get through. Not panic buying - just no re-stocking Hmm

We genuinely had no bread and ended up having to buy an expensive (and stale Hmm) "artisan" loaf at the local deli (nothing in the Sainsbury's Local), having walked to the shops (roads were impassible, even in inner city GlasgowHmm) (unfortunately my sourdough starter was dormant at the time and would've taken 36 hours to get going again - which I did do especially after paying an extortionate amount for a loaf that wasn't nearly as good Sad).

We got the second last milk in the shop - no more than we needed.

We ate well despite/because of that as we were fortunate enough to have a well stocked freezer and cupboards.

I intend to continue to be prepared - but with the addition of extra supplies of my daily contact lenses, which come from Ireland. I usually only order more the week before and I really don't like wearing glasses.

LineRunner · 29/07/2018 20:03

My exOH has a big family and he really does already need to be well stocked anyway. I've spoken to him today about storing some extra things for them in my loft, as he's more space limited.

But again, as others have said, it's medicines that worry us most, especially for the DC.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 20:47

Im glad i read this

I wasnt going to...but my highlight is a poster saying that if the 2000 fuel shortages were a big deal there would be articles

Then someone posts an article

The a posters says it there would be a wiki article ....and someone links the wiki article

Ive enjoyed it so far

(Gave up on my sourdough as i was struggling with a foolproof bread recipe)

TheElementsSong · 29/07/2018 20:50

You missed a step Rufus in which the articles didn't report a sufficiently catastrophic situation to be deemed satisfactory.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 20:55

Oh yes so i did elements

Very enjoyable overall though....

caroldecker · 29/07/2018 20:59

None of the articles talk about significant food shortages, which was the initial claim.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:09

Still enjoying it carol

Wine ?

prettybird · 29/07/2018 21:19

Rufus - my sourdough was always highly variable but I've recently resurrected the starter and am using a No Knead Sourdough recipe from the Breadtopia website with consistently good results. The fact that it is No Knead is a brilliant bonus! I'm lazy Wink

TheElementsSong · 29/07/2018 21:20

I wonder what would be defined as a suitably significant disruption to allow a level of concerned discussion? Presumably "more than that amount in any given example, short of Mad Max/global nuclear winter" Grin

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:32

I might look at that recipe pretty

My sourdough starter was a thing of beauty...but the bread wasnt Grin

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 21:34

@Rufustheyawningreindeer - already planning @prettybird 's recipe suggestion. Thank you again. Excellent!

SimonBridges · 29/07/2018 21:34

No one talked about significant food shortages.
Just some, for a day or two.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:41

bellin

I was very fond of my starter...he was called boris

pretty? Could you do a similar recipe without a starter? Its just id rather not make a ne sourdough baby and the kill it when i cant make the bread

TheElementsSong · 29/07/2018 21:46

No one talked about significant food shortages.

Yes, but was it less bad than the Black Death? Or Mad Max? Eh? Eh? Because anything less than that is not worth even thinking about, dontcha know?

prettybird · 29/07/2018 21:50

Rufus - I think you can. I haven't looked at the rest of the website, but I get the impression it was a variation of a normal yeast based recipe.

But I can keep my sourdough in the fridge ignored for over a month with zero care and attention Blush and it survived. Only took 2 days of TLC (feeding and whisking it daily) for it to be fully active again.

The heat probably helped though! Grin

prettybird · 29/07/2018 21:55

Here is the recipe

https://breadtopia.com/sourdough-no-knead-bread/

I find I need more water than it suggests - but that might be a function of my particular starter (1/4 cup = 50 ml and I find I need 8 x 50ml measures of water).

The only problem is that this recipe doesn't use enough starter Confused - by the time I've re-fed it, I end up with more! HmmConfused

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 21:59

Boris was rather big when i killed him Sad

TheElementsSong · 29/07/2018 22:08

I'm not going down that sourdough route again. Hermann was a fucking chain-letter-style burden.

prettybird · 29/07/2018 22:16

I had a Hermann ShockHmm

That's why my sourdough starter a) doesn't have a name Wink and b) spends most of its time in the fridge Grin

prettybird · 29/07/2018 22:17

....I also periodically throw out half of it Grin

ICJump · 29/07/2018 22:28

Thanks for the no kneed recipe. I may revive my starter.

For those with overflowing starter I’ve found making a batch of sourdough crumpets uses up heaps of starter. www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/sourdough-crumpets-recipe

I’m not in the UK but worried about MIL.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 29/07/2018 22:33

Oooh sourdough crumpets...

prettybird · 29/07/2018 22:40

Oooh - ds loves crumpets Grin

Unfortunately I can't eat any of it as I'm following the MN HFLC Boot Camp Hmm I'm looking forward to when I get to maintenance and might be able to have the odd slice of sourdough or a crumpet

bellinisurge · 30/07/2018 05:44

@ICJump with this sourdough crumpets recipe you are spoiling us [making Homer Simpson noises]
