Well worth a read and fairly sobering stuff.

Where exactly are companies supposed to put all this extra product? How do they pay for creating it and housing it for months on end?

Bought a tin of peaches today for stockpiling purposes..

To the posters who were interested in the preparing for WW2 programme, I couldn't find it on an initial look but I'll keep searching.

LineRunner · 28/07/2018 13:46

A lot of tinned food has 'use by' dates of 2021 so a modest stockpile will hardly go to waste.

I'm channelling my inner Eric Cantona - and embracing sardines.

To give the Swedes their due - and to counter the bemused comments of author of the article - their recommendation of rose-hip soup will be because it is a fantastic source of Vitamin C - something that will be otherwise lacking Wink

MonumentVal · 28/07/2018 14:24

I think the most likely outcome is price rises, particularly of fresh fruit, and the odd supply blip of particular items, so I'm making sure my cupboards are kept well stocked. I have family abroad who routinely prepare for being snowed in for a couple months, so I try to ensure I have enough for a couple weeks in comfort, usually in case I'm too ill to sort out food.
And similarly, it's likely to be a couple days if there are other infrastructure problems. We have a gas camping stove in case of power failure, and I have reasonable stocks of meds, so its only disruption of water that could be a problem - which Thames Water had this winter anyway. I also remember the fuel crisis as I had to move house during it - no van so did 8 trips on the Tube across London, and then managed to dismantle all my furniture and get it into a taxi with a roof rack...

There will robably be a move to a rationing-type diet only with more sugar and dairy and eggs, simply for cost reasons. I very much doubt it will be like Venezuela about 5 years ago when the average person lost 10% of their body weight and on the whole, public health experts were delighted.

SimonBridges · 28/07/2018 14:37

Maybe I'm odd, but I can recall how quickly we went from 0 to near riots when the fuel tankers stopped running back in 2000.

I remember it well. There was no bread or milk to be had, nor bread flour and yeast. Fortunately I had bread flour at home and knew where to buy fresh yeast.

My mother always stockpiles food and I’m the same.
Just me and DH but I’m fairly sure we could last for about 2 weeks without leaving the house. We don’t have dairy milk which makes a big difference.

prettybird · 28/07/2018 14:49

I have my own sour dough starter (nearly 3 years old Smile) so don't even need yeast! ....just need to stockpile the bread flour Wink

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 15:53

@prettybird - awesome! I want one.

prettybird · 28/07/2018 16:02

They're easy to make: grate an apple, add to some yoghurt and flour (think I did a hybrid of a H F-W and Wozza or Ramsay recipe) and mix for a couple of weeks.

You then need to feed it regularly with flour (I use a mix of white bread flour and rye flour) and water (nice soft Scottish water Grin) - but can make it go dormant if required by spring it in the fridge.

I've just started following a Sourdough No-Knead technique from the Breadtopia site which is giving brilliant results. (And no kneading! Grin)

I've also worked out that I can, at a push, still make it during power cuts on our firepit in my big Le Creuset casserole. Smile

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 16:17

That's actually inspired me. I have a pathetic solitary apple on a mini tree - go a use for it in a Paul Hollywood sourdough starter recipe I found . #middleclassprepping!

prettybird · 28/07/2018 16:29

Actually it might have been Paul Hollywood's recipe that I merged with H F-W's recipe Grin

It was 3 years ago! Wink

prettybird · 28/07/2018 16:33

Correction: ....go dormant by putting it in the fridge Blush

My even more middle class tip is to put caraway seeds into the bread mix. Wink Best value caraway seeds I've found are in Flying Tiger. Memo to self: must stock up on them as part if my stash Wink

SleepFreeZone · 28/07/2018 16:42

I know everyone is enjoying all the scaremongering but do you not think that if the U.K. started running out of food and therefore dying, other countries might send aid? No?

Cyw2018 · 28/07/2018 16:49

I'm starting to plan my stockpiling. But how far do I take it? If we have power outages we can't cook it (so do I stockpile gas for our camping stove as well), and we risk loosing any freezer stockpile. We also need a power supply for our water (private supply- electric pump), so do I need to come up with a back up plan for that too.

I have also started looking at an escape plan, I am a in a sort after health profession, so beginning to read up on transferring qualification to Canada, New Zealand, Australia.

It's scary times, I didn't vote for this, I have a really nice life now, it makes me sad and angry!

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 16:49

@SleepFreeZone - not really planning to rely on other people to feed my family if I have the means/ability too.

As far as I recall "excessive" overseas aid was one of the reasons people voted Brexit.

Apologies if @prettybird
and I enjoying a sourdough starter moment upsets you.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 16:52

@Cyw2018 - take it slowly. Don't get freaked out about having to buy a power generator etc.
The standard starting point is having 3 days worth of meals /drinks etc in.
For many, that's all they can stomach and their budget can allow.
If you have a camping stove - that's great.

SleepFreeZone · 28/07/2018 16:53

No not at all, I love sourdough. I already have plenty of food in my two large freezers and cupboards full of tinned food. However when people on this thread start discussing others dying it does make me wonder whether anyone else would help us with aid. Particularly since you’ve said in your post, we are very generous when it comes to offering aid to others.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 17:01

I must have missed stuff about people dying - I remember a bit about the dead body of someone's cat in the freezer.
I am a prepper. I hope for the best and prepare for bad stuff.
I've trotted this one out a few times but I think food supply issues are likely but anything else such as power cuts is less likely. Doesn't mean I , as a prepper, haven't got preps for them but I don't think anyone else should feel obliged to just because I do.

TheElementsSong · 28/07/2018 17:03

SleepFree I’m fairly sure that other nations will come to our aid in the very unlikely event that things get that bad. But, IMHO, if it comes to us needing foreign aid to avoid dying, isn’t that kind of the definition of a failed state? Not exactly a successful Brexit. Especially as aid would very likely come from our nearest neighbours - the EU!

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 17:06

@prettybird - if your ds is off to uni and you are a bit worried- think about dehydrating and sealing food. Good idea anyway and the gear isn't too pricey.
Look at 1960HikerDude and KevinOutdoors on YouTube for recipes. Just add water to rehydrate for a nice warm meal.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 17:11

@prettybird - they are kind of backpacker meals and don't take up a lot of space.
Here's a photo of 500g of turkey mince that I dehydrated. Oxygen absorber and moisture absorber in the bag along with the cooked dehydrated mince.

The dead cat in the freezer was mine Blush

I've already done my AngryAngryAngryAngry post (if not in this thread, the Westministenders thread) about WTF the Government was doing still in power after saying this needed to be prepared for in peace time Angry as a result of a self inflicted action Angry and with no viable opposition excoriating them Angry

And breeeeaaaathe

(That's despite the fact that as a Scot, we might have an exit strategy - but I don't wish the pain on England Sad)

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:16

@prettybird - I am sorry about your cat and sounding glib. Major cat lover with cat preps Blush.
I just didn't want new joiners to the thread to think that preparing for a food problem = dead bodies everywhere.

prettybird · 28/07/2018 18:24

I wasn't upset, honest. Smile
