Brexit

What would be a good compromise for both sides?

There is little talk of this really.

Would a deal where:

  1. The UK leaves the customs union so it is able to arrange its own trade deals.
  2. Industries with cross border supply chains are granted special access in both countries.
  3. The UK still pays some sort of fee into the EU for this access.
  4. The UK can set numbers on EU immigration based upon figures required by industry.
  5. There is a seperate ISDS court for UK/EU rulings.

Would that suit?

News flash: MN is not real life. I know plenty of Leavers and Remainers and they never conduct themselves like twats in public. They are free to vent anonymously on a public forum like MN.

SemiPermanent · 11/04/2017 13:53

Victim card??

Not from me.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 11/04/2017 14:25

A small and abhorant group (of remainers)who are just as abhorant and nasty as the extreme BNP lot.

you think remoaners are the same as the 'extreme' BNP (as opposed to the average BNP?!). Dearie me.

SemiPermanent · 11/04/2017 14:36

You are twisting my words somewhat disingenuously there histiny, as you are well aware.

"the extreme BNP lot" is one complete phrase - as in 'the BNP lot are extreme'.
In no way do I imagine a 'spectrum' wrt the BNP.

But you knew that really, didn't you.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 11/04/2017 14:41

I have no idea what you mean;

Which remoaner views do you find as abhorant as those on a political party that calls for forced repatriation, racial segregation, that is anti Semitic, holocasust denying? I'm not twisting your words, I'd like to know what their views are that are as abhorant as those. Everyone should know.

SemiPermanent · 11/04/2017 14:51

Everyone should know

😂

SapphireStrange · 11/04/2017 15:08

Semi, laugh it up, but it's true –if it's important to be aware of how nasty the leave side can get (and it is) then it's equally important to know how nasty the equivalent on the remain side is.

I am very keen to find out what remainers have been saying that are as bad as the examples histiny gives. So that I can distance myself from them, apart from anything else.

Dreardre · 11/04/2017 15:14

Obviously I don't think Leavers are the same as Jo Cox's murderer or the people who sent threatening messages to Polish kids calling them vermin. So where are the examples of Remain supporters doing hideous things like this. Like pp said, I need to know because I want to distance myself from them.

Dreardre · 11/04/2017 15:15

And if you, Semi, have experienced BNP-esque tactics in real life you should go to the police.

LynnsSnazzyCardigan · 11/04/2017 15:19

As the mum of a child with disabilities I was horrified with the resurgence of words such as retard, mongs and cretin that were flying about after the referendum. I found those tickers counting down until the deaths of the over 60s pretty abhorrent too.

I'm not making a comparison to the BNP btw, I don't know much about them but thought I'd share some of what made me feel hurt and uncomfortable.

I acknowledge there's been shitty behaviour on both sides; only online though, never encountered such anger and vitriol in RealLife. We're all far too busy dealing with the crap every day life throws up to be rowing about Brexit on a daily basis. It's discussed yes, but never gets heated.

Dreardre · 11/04/2017 15:29

Lynns, that is horrible. If I ever heard or saw any of that shit I would jump on it.
FWIW any Remain voters who whinge about older voters not having any right to have a say would get short shrift from me. I know over 80s who voted Remain and people in their 20s who voted Leave.

LynnsSnazzyCardigan · 11/04/2017 15:35

Social media was awash with disablist language in the weeks following the referendum. Not so much on MN mind, thankfully!

My mum is over 60 and voted Remain, lots of her peer group did too. My dad is an old left-wing socialist and voted Leave. To see a ticker counting down to their deaths, however they voted, was horrible.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 11/04/2017 16:20

I still don't get what you're saying semi.

In the brexit arms, they constantly refer to remainers as remoaners. What on earth are the views I hold that are as nasty and as abhorant as forced repatriation, racial segregation and holocaust denial?

Anon1234567890 · 11/04/2017 16:31

Remoaners are people who voted remain, are now refusing to accept the result of the referendum and are hoping if they moan loud enough thy can somehow subvert democracy and stop us from leaving the EU. There seems to be a disproportionately large amount of them on MN.

I was a Remainer and I'd like a Fudgit This is exactly the sort of pretend Brexit that leavers need to stay vigilant against. It is what is fueling the idea that 'no deal is better than a bad deal' and is keeping our country divided. We need a clean Brexit and then a deal compromise that is good for both everyone, not just leavers.

SapphireStrange · 11/04/2017 16:37

We need a clean Brexit and then a deal compromise

Can you explain how this would work, Anon? And why are you scoring out 'deal'? Genuine questions.

are hoping if they moan loud enough thy can somehow subvert democracy and stop us from leaving the EU. Personally, I'm not – I know we're leaving;which is why I want the best deal possible. For me that is indeed characterised as a 'Fudgit' because it would include many of the EU benefits we have currently.

Youdontwanttodothat · 11/04/2017 16:38

I moan about the result. I have no intention of trying to subvert it. Bed made. Lie in it. Don't expect me to turn into a BeLeaver just because you are.

twofingerstoEverything · 11/04/2017 16:42

I moan about the result. I have no intention of trying to subvert it. Bed made. Lie in it. Don't expect me to turn into a BeLeaver just because you are.
Ditto, but I'd like to add that I might stop 'moaning' if I saw any semblance of a good-looking, sensible plan.

SemiPermanent · 11/04/2017 16:52

What on earth are the views I hold that are as nasty and as abhorant as forced repatriation, racial segregation and holocaust denial?

I am thoroughly bemused as to how you have come to the conclusion that I have explicitly said, or indeed implied, that your views are in any way comparable to 'forced repatriation, racial segregation or holocaust denial'.

Do, however, feel free to provide evidence of my doing so.

Youdontwanttodothat · 11/04/2017 16:54

You brought up the BNP remainers, semi. Totally unclear who these people are.

SapphireStrange · 11/04/2017 16:59

Semi, you're totally right that you have not implied that histiny's views are that abhorrent.

However, you've answered that point but not the original one, which is Which remoaner views do you find as abhorant as those on a political party that calls for forced repatriation, racial segregation, that is anti Semitic, holocasust denying?

I'd be very interested in the answer; as I said earlier, so I can distance myself from these views.

herethereandeverywhere · 11/04/2017 17:01

I really wish the Leavers would put as much time and effort into making the case for our 'brighter future' as they spend pointing out 1) how people who voted remain are moaners
2) how people who voted remain are all nasty and horrible and pick on the poor leavers
3) how they can't possible give a clear explanation of the plan for or benefits of Brexit due to 1and 2.

Every thread is exactly the same.

Youdontwanttodothat · 11/04/2017 17:03

Here Grin

histinyhandsarefrozen · 11/04/2017 17:04

I think some leavers genuinely feel that being told their views are stupid on twitter is like being beaten up for being polish.
They really feel that being told their views on immigration are racist on mumsnet is the same experience as being black and being chased down the street and being told "we'll get you lot out next".

It is utterly, utterly deluded.

Semi, you said remoaners views were as abhorant and nasty as the extreme BNP. Which views?

Anon, you were asked several times about how as normal people we try to make brexit work or we try to make brexit fail. Could you be more specific?

histinyhandsarefrozen · 11/04/2017 17:08

Very true, here there.

SemiPermanent · 11/04/2017 17:09

You brought up the BNP remainers, semi.

Did I?
Or did I say:

There are a small, extreme group who are just as nasty & abhorrent as the extreme BNP lot who want to subvert and overturn the ref result and will do anything they can to achieve that - they are the teeth gnashing, bigoted few who sneer repeatedly at anyone who voted differently to them and are equally as obnoxiously hateful as their opposite numbers.

Fwiw I don't refer to Remainers who are reasonable, nice people as remoaners.

I do not refer to Remainers who protest against Brexit as remoaners.

I do not refer to people who are exercising their democratic right to oppose Brexit as remoaners.

In fact, I think I made it quite clear exactly the type of person I would refer to as a remoaner.
