Holiday insurance and dementia problem.

I know you will appreciate my quandary. DM has last minute booked a holiday, without consultation with anyone. It leaves this Friday.
It’s totally unsuitable. 🤐🤯

Can we cancel and get it covered by insurance? I’m concerned about her wellbeing as it’s an arduous trip. She also can’t actually get to it, at the moment.

I think she would cancel if she thought she’d get her money back.

Any ideas or wisdom from previous experience?

She’s 84 and may or may not be suffering dementia. Which she may or may not have declared when she bought her annual travel insurance a year ago.

I don’t know. We don’t have PoA.

Any idea where I can go for help? AgeUK will be my first phone call.

Fabulous, enjoy your rest. I think you might be an angel, 😇 sent in my time of need! I go looking on cruise-mapper each day and am amazed at the ground you cover- I had to scroll and scroll to find you this morning!

Oh what happened??

TruthAndTrust · 07/11/2024 15:36

AMAZING thread. Glad all is well.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/11/2024 15:51

I’m invested now. So she’s back home, less than a week into a two week cruise?

I was assuming back on board after a trip onshore.

picklemepopcorn · 07/11/2024 16:14

Back on board after ringing me from a shopping mall to ask me to ring Lidl to get her parking ticket cancelled.

“And I’m in a bit of a bad position but you won’t be able to help with that… I have got separated from everyone and I don’t know where I am and it’s getting dark.”

Followed by no answer to me ringing, no response to texts or messages. Findmyphone didn’t work because she hasn’t turned on roaming.

She finally answered my son when he rang. I’m getting him to ring from now on! 😅

I’m off to have a stiff drink and a hot bath, having cried off work tonight. Told boss I was feeling shaky after a now resolved family emergency.

It will have been a great adventure and all everyone else’s fault, I imagine.

I was just pondering how she would regale her dinner companions tonight with her adventure. Scary for you though.

Poffy · 07/11/2024 16:23

I love this. She reminds me of my late mum who was a glamorous extrovert, very impulsive and had a selective memory.
We had a "cruise" incident. She and my dad had done a couple of cruises in their 60s. When dad died she found a cousin who was happy to travel with her and they did various holidays.
One day when I called she was full of excitement about a Greek Island cruise she had booked online. She was about 80 by then, had a mild stroke a couple of years earlier, heart failure and a host of other things wrong.
I asked her about travel insurance and had she told them everything? Clearly not as she just shrugged and said no-one asked her.
Worse was to come because when I looked at the holiday she had actually booked an island hopping holiday. So far from the luxury of a cruise ship it was a week of Greek ferries and one night stays in basic hostels.
She had to cancel and lost the full cost.

GreatTheCat · 07/11/2024 16:40

Hmm the coach stop was right outside the shopping mall. Lol. She loves to wind you up.

We are at dinner now.

stayathomegardener · 07/11/2024 17:19

This is adorable xx

picklemepopcorn · 07/11/2024 17:32

She’s a madam. Bloody Drama Queen. <chunter chunter grumble grumble>

What a wonderful thread and what a lovely person you are, @GreatTheCat

TheShellBeach · 07/11/2024 17:58

Actually, my Nana did something like this when she was 82.

She was living in an annexe of my aunt and uncle's house.

One morning, auntie couldn't find Nana. Or her suitcase.

Nana turned up three days later at my other Granny's house, 752 miles away.

This was in the 1970s, so no phones etc.

She had caught two buses and a train to get to London, then got a sleeper to Inverness, then another 4 hour bus journey further north.

It was all very odd, because my two grandmothers had only met once before, at my parents' wedding.

🤣

Such a sweet thread
how kind of @GreatTheCat

hope you have a great cruise, I always wanted to do similar

GreatTheCat · 09/11/2024 13:27

Thank you.

The weather here is terrible. The waves are coming up to (and above) my windows!!

Haven't seen your mum for 2 days as I haven't been for dinner but I'm going tonight.

chocolateanddietcoke · 09/11/2024 13:39

Obsessed with this thread

picklemepopcorn · 09/11/2024 14:10

Oh dear! Do you get seasick? It’s the roughness I was worried about, that she’d fall on an unstable boat or just feel ill.

No sign of the lights yet?

GreatTheCat · 09/11/2024 19:01

No, no I'm not sick! Thankfully x

Just been for dinner.. You mum said a tile fell of her ceiling and almost hit her! I watch her out side when the captain said the lights were on.. She was pretty strong on her feet!

picklemepopcorn · 09/11/2024 19:21

That is reassuring thank you! She’s like a wind up toy, she just keeps going! Glad you aren’t poorly.
