Holiday insurance and dementia problem.

I know you will appreciate my quandary. DM has last minute booked a holiday, without consultation with anyone. It leaves this Friday.
It’s totally unsuitable. 🤐🤯

Can we cancel and get it covered by insurance? I’m concerned about her wellbeing as it’s an arduous trip. She also can’t actually get to it, at the moment.

I think she would cancel if she thought she’d get her money back.

Any ideas or wisdom from previous experience?

She’s 84 and may or may not be suffering dementia. Which she may or may not have declared when she bought her annual travel insurance a year ago.

I don’t know. We don’t have PoA.

Any idea where I can go for help? AgeUK will be my first phone call.

I found this thread last night when squeezed between my parents, teens and some unpleasant neighbours and it really cheered me up.

I have a cruise addicted parent who's impulsive at the best of times, I started reading this thinking I was just storing away information for damage control but it's come with a delightful twist!

Thank you for updating.

GreatTheCat · 12/11/2024 11:14

Awww thank you.. Well almost home and a mum in one piece!

She told me last night a little about David x

Oh wow @GreatTheCat that's a beautiful picture.

Maddy70 · 12/11/2024 12:34

A cruise will be fine for her. It won't be cold on the ship and they're easy to walk around

Sounds like you haven't caught up with the rest of the thread.

My Dad was a saint, @GreatTheCat ! That’s the one subject she’s thoroughly reliable on! He was as awesome as she says, and I miss him. Did she mention their last cruise to Norway? 🤐

I also miss his ability to keep her in line! I hope she’s behaving well for fellow guests. She can be a little erratic/a lot demanding.

She’s managed to keep me on my toes despite the distance- a long list of instructions yesterday but again the phone line only worked in one direction and she talked over my questions before hanging up!

That photo is amazing, Cat. I am pleased that she’s seen what she went for!

Almost home!

Saw Carol today in the hot tub, we had a little chat.

And saw her tonight at dinner where we all took photos!

She fell over during the night on to her hip, but she made it back up.

She's in a good mood.

picklemepopcorn · 13/11/2024 20:23

Oh fabulous, thank you. She rang me this morning with a few more instructions 🤣! I’ll be glad when she’s safely back home!

I'm just checking in for my fix of feel good universe....
And what should I encourage. Mum is nearly 80, she thinks the cruise insurance goes up a lot.
She went a lot on P&O but not since my Dad died. She's booked a few coach trips with local friends, it's worked because it's busy and different. Not sure if she'd spend her whole time sobbing about cruises past.

picklemepopcorn · 15/11/2024 17:54

@CarbONothing how physically well is she? I think Mum found this one gruelling. How long has it been since you lost your dad? Mum became steadily more able to enjoy things each year since dad.

She got lucky with lift directly home. She may well keep booking challenging trips and hoping to get lucky! I’ll probably hear a bit more about it at Christmas.

It's about 18 months which I appreciate is nothing after nearly 60 years. Anniversaries are hard, lots of slightly random ones we'd never heard of before.
The coach trips have been ace. Relatively cheap, short and UK.
She's backed out of independent, long haul trips to relatives but they always preferred the dressing up, entertainment, talking at others side of cruising rather than going to see family.
I think I'm careful of what to encourage because once she gets her teeth into something I think she'd be happily booking as many trips as the travel agent could put in front of her.
She lies about her health, we tend to find out stuff late or never. Memory fantasy land is creeping in a bit and anxiety about fairly normal stuff.

picklemepopcorn · 15/11/2024 18:43

That sounds familiar! What about a little taster cruise? Mum went round the uk just after Covid. That worked really well for her.

The U3A ran good trips, but they always seem to be fully booked before she finds out about them, these days! 🤐

Hotel weekends like murder mystery, or Strictly, do a good line in dressy occasions I believe.

Has she tried Warner’s?

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 15/11/2024 18:44

oh yes, the random anniversaries and ‘particular favourites’ that proliferated after dad’s death. So many things I didn’t know were his ‘absolute favourite’.

CarbONothing · 15/11/2024 18:50

We should warn @GreatTheCat to steer clear of Warners.
They need to manage it like a Year Six primary school trip, just enough daily feedback to allow us to be confident there's a grown up in charge.

Glad your mum made it home safely. Thanks again for the joyous turn the thread took.

MelainesLaugh · 15/11/2024 18:55

This turned out to be a lovely thread! Well done Cat for keeping an eye out for her.

I’m quite jealous of your cruise!

GreatTheCat · 15/11/2024 20:30

I'm 51, pretty young to be on this cruise.. A lot of people were over 75... Your mum has a picture of me!

Glad it worked out well for her!

GreatTheCat · 15/11/2024 20:31

... I won't be going near a Warners!!

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 15/11/2024 21:05

Ahh what a lovely end to my week. I enjoyed this thread!

picklemepopcorn · 16/11/2024 08:00

I hope I get to see the pics, Great! She’s inclined to live in the moment- by the time she gets home, she’ll have moved on and I’ll hear all about the next problem rather than what a lovely time she had!
Though I have had to write letters of complaint for her in the past, when there have been specific problems.
One of her first trips, she came home with Covid. Was really poorly.

And thank you to those who journeyed virtually alongside Mum and Cat!
Here’s to me not being here again in three months, fretting about a train ride through the Rockies!
