Anyone want to join a year 13 UCAS THREAD?

We can join in stressing about ucas forms interviews etc?

I am finding it all a very steep learning curve - we could support one another - celebrate and commiserate?

Ajandjjmum - ds1 got the letter today and it is for van mildert. He will go on the monday/tuesday and will do it on his own. It will be a good taster for the one night.

The offer is good and it does reduce the pressure, but he is still waiting for his first choice which has AAA as standard.

Swedey · 29/01/2010 12:30

DS1 received offer from UCL for medicine yesterday, just two days after his interview. He's delighted to receive it but he prefers either Barts (already has an offer from them) or Sheffield or Newcastle (interviewed and awaiting decision). He didn't really like the feel of UCL much.

We are all going out to Prezzo this evening to celebrate.

ajandjjmum · 29/01/2010 15:04

DS is going on the Monday/Tuesday lazymum - they'll have a ball.

The main concern now is that DS has struggled with all of the modules he has taken over the last week or so - which is disappointing as he has worked hard. Still, we'll wait until March before panicking!

NotAnOtter · 04/02/2010 23:55

ajandjsmum - ds also loathed a couple of his modules (stress stress!) especially biology which put him in a vile mood

dreading reults

swedes well done ds1!!!

ds loved ucl and prefers it to durham atm for reserve choice - lots of his friends picking it due to world ranking!

Swedey · 06/02/2010 14:32

Placed on waiting list for Sheffield. Which is basically a rejection, only more mediocre. I must be a terribly pushy mother as I felt very aggrieved on his behalf. How dare they.

We are now waiting on Newcastle and they will let him know in March.

I think DS1 will attend post offer open days and decide then.

NotAnOtter · 06/02/2010 20:47

teehee swedes! me too

ds is still waiting on Edinburgh - his last choice

J walked in the door the other day and said 'rejected' - I actually felt myself blush

turns out it was his passport photo that was rejected at the post office - not university!

looking at the increase in applicants etc this year i think we should all be really pleased with our dcs - there are some really bright lovely boys in ds year with no offers yet - heart breaking

brimfull · 06/02/2010 20:50

swede-when did your ds get his sheffield notification?

dd still waiting for sheffield-desp wants to go there .

NotAnOtter · 06/02/2010 20:53

ggirl - not sheffield but ds got sick of waiting for edinburgh and emailed saying other universities were pushing him to accept offers and he needed to know and they wrote back immediately and said it would be within the week...might be worth a try

brimfull · 06/02/2010 22:30

nao- really , when is the latest they can let you know?

Actually she does need to know as her other offers are inviting her to dept open days and if she knows she's got an offer from sheffield she probably won't go to one or two of them.

NotAnOtter · 06/02/2010 22:49

yes that open day thing was what he said !

no idea about latest but i do know a boy who has an interview at sheffield HALLAM in may!!!

This world ranking thing does throw a spanner in the works for DS, as he feels UCL would be 'more recognised' than Durham, but that he would have a better university life at Durham. Having said that, he's got to get the grades first. If, by some miracle, these module results are better than expected, he is thinking of firming Durham and having UCL as insurance.
Good luck to everyone still waiting.

NotAnOtter · 07/02/2010 12:38

aj ds was all out for ucl as insurance but - like your dc has thought again and thinks durham may be better quality of life (plus gets to live in a castle!)

Swedey · 07/02/2010 17:54

I think it depends on the subject doesn't it? The only thing I will say about UCL and Oxbridge is they are much more respected overseas than they perhaps should be.... relative to other top UK universities, especially by American and Japanese companies. And perhaps that should be borne in mind as the job market becomes more and more global.

But mostly I think they should have a good time.

If DS1 accepts UCL as his first choice, that will be 6 years in central London.

brimfull · 08/02/2010 00:03

any opinions on dd choice of insurance offer from an employers pov, which would have better reputation?

swansea or reading ..for economics and french

ajandjjmum · 08/02/2010 14:08

Reading seems to come out above Swansea, but I suppose it's really down to how comfortable your dd feels at both unis.

brimfull · 08/02/2010 21:18

Yes I agree, here's hoping she gets the grades for her first choice.

NotAnOtter · 08/02/2010 22:31

wow! a boy at ds school unexppectedly got an offer for economics with history from oxford in december. the offer was aaa to include maths. today the history department have told him if he fails to get the A in maths he can change to history - so he now has two oxford offers!!!

brimfull · 11/02/2010 19:04

who's still waiting then?

dd's friend got a rejection from sheffield the other day

but dd still waiting and getting quite impatient ..must say I am getting impatient as well. WOuldn't be so bad is it wasn't her favoured one.

lazymumofteenagesons · 11/02/2010 20:55

Still waiting for one of DS1s durham applications. But i've been on student room website and there are still loads waiting to hear on this course. Last years applicants said some of them heard after the cut off date and also after the open days had been! Go onto 'student room' and see what you can find for that course at Sheffield - I seem to have become almost as addicted to that as Mumsnet!

ajandjjmum · 12/02/2010 14:28

I'm there with you lazymum - feel like a bit of a aged stalker.

lazymumofteenagesons · 12/02/2010 16:27

Ajandjjmum - Every now and then I really want to have my say on it and have to avoid the temptation of setting myself up with a false student identity . I really wish I hadn't found it. Its mumsnets fault I think 'Milliways' brought it to my attention.

brimfull · 12/02/2010 17:46

oh I so agree with the tsr site , love it and desp want to join but so far have resisted
I can't find anyone on there doing joint economics and french -gah!

Milliways · 12/02/2010 22:23

My ears are burning now

But I agree, it was a great site for me when DD was applying, and now DS can use it for GCSE help etc.

lazymumofteenagesons · 13/02/2010 17:50

DS1 has been moved to a college on his first choice Durham application. That means the academic dept has accepted him and aslong as the college has room he is in . Since the college has already accepted him for Anthropology and Sociology I hope its a formality. He is very pleased and has been having a bad time lately and this has helped alot with boosting his confidence etc.

ajandjjmum · 14/02/2010 13:17

That's brilliant lazymum - so it's a near certainty now! Glad it's given him a boost - we all need that occasionally.
