How funny adragonisfor life - I felt sick when i visited the private schools, and relieved and excited when I visited the state schools!

In answer to op I think there are loads of mn-ers pro-private school.
I went to private school but for various reasons didn't want that for my dds.

I am so excited by the passion and energy I see in some of the comprehensives I've been visiting for dd1. Clearly many mners feel that at some private schools.

Horses for courses I say!

Surely if everyone pulled their DCs out of private education this would cripple, not enhance the provision of state education as the system couldn't cope with the numbers and the government couldn't foot the bill. Perhaps we should be grateful to those who free up resources and space in the State system by paying for their children to be educated privately.

I don't see "freeing up space for other children" argument as being particularly valid. However, the reality is that if DS1 goes to the private school rather than the state one, it frees up a place for another child. DS1 would be very likely to get into the state school either on ability or distance, so, by sending him private instead (and the choice is literally this school or the private one), his space is free for someone else.
