Someone help me please. My fingers are so sore from sewing these wretched labels on. Wish I bought the iron on ones, but so many people advised against it.

Now I've got to the socks and dont really know where to put them. I guess the soles, so I did one (sewinig the ends on) but now I think it should be sewn all the way round. That is going to take AGES.

Someone help, please.....

I ahve iron on labels but they are not really sticking to socks as they are stretchy so I have done 2 pairs and given up.

Am I being thick and naive in thinking that she won't take her socks off?

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:23

TSAP: It is usual for children to take off their socks to do PE. They usually do indoor PE in bare feet. But your school may be different. Perhaps something to ask in the first week?

naswm · 03/09/2006 22:24

ah twinset - I am not really gloating that your labels arent sticking, but it does make me feel slightly better about my sewing them on!

I dont think you are being naive about them being taken off - it all depends if your school does PE in bare feet or has sports socks. If so, then they will definitely be coming off!

Good luck. Let me know how you get on. I need to order some iron on labels for next time

But she has plimsolls for PE, so will she not take her school shoes off and put her plimsolls on?

Spatz · 03/09/2006 22:57

I didn't bother with labels on socks last year for reception and we didn't lose a single one - she took them off for pe and swimming and probably for drama/dance stuff.

ja9 · 03/09/2006 23:05

oh naswm, stop whinging and get on with it

i taught Primary2 last session and had an interesting 'situation' arise with parents, when 2 girls in my class had a tug of war with a pair of tights after a PE lesson. it was not pleasant, so get sewing!!!

DumbledoresGirl · 04/09/2006 09:47

TSAP - don't assume anything! I bought mine all plimsolls and at the school they were at before we moved, they never wore them until the summer term - by which time they were too small of course! In the autumn and spring terms, they only did PE indoors and always bare foot.

Not sure now about their present school.

But it is safe to say that it is unlikely that any reception child will do PE, with or without their socks in the first week of school (teachers lke to settle them a bit before starting the great lesson of "changing for PE") so you have a little time yet before you need worry about lost socks!

naswm · 04/09/2006 09:50

Hi DG didnt see you 'slip in' again! Re PE in 1st week. DS1 will be doing it. I checked. Glad I spent half the night sewing now. lol

That school of yours is very scary naswm!

(Sorry I am not on msn right now. You know why. Forgive me.)

naswm · 04/09/2006 10:14

Hi DG, hope you are ok. (I'm not sure why you are not on MSN if you are on MN, hope eveyone is ok... maybe I am just being dense! But dont worry, I'm going out now.) Nx

Hope ds1 enjoys his last day of freedom naswm.
Re MN and msn - I am not up for a conversation right now but I am always up for some time wasting. But I must get myself together now as I think my children could do with some last minute entertaining before the term begins.

sugarfree · 04/09/2006 10:44

Life is too short for labelling socks,I'm sorry but it is.
My boys have got 9 years of school between them and we've never lost a sock yet.

mummydoc · 04/09/2006 10:48

my dd1 school insist everything labelled ( and socks from school shop at £5 a pair i don't want them lost!) go to easy2name.com where i found iron on transfers for socks which basocally look like the babygap socks ( if you have ever seen them) with your childs name instead of "babygap" in slightly raised letters and best of all they stretch with the sock - how fab is that! i have done all dd1 socks and knickers and have done all dd2 socks and knickers for nursery - hurrah. last year i nearly lost the will tolive stretching socks as i sewed ...

mummydoc · 04/09/2006 10:48

ps am not shcreholder in easy2name or anything just think this product so fab!

DumbledoresGirl · 04/09/2006 10:50

now labelling socks I have heard of, but labelling pants?

Anchovy · 04/09/2006 11:22

My nanny (who has looked after Famous Children in the past and knows a thing or 2) said we should label pants and soks and vests. EEEEK. We compromised that she did the socks (fully sewn round name taps, going vertically IIRC) and I said she could do pants and vest if she wanted to but I wasn't going to bother. Can't remember if she did or not.

DS goes to a small private school and believe me, no small private school in London is ever knowingly under-uniformed. We have different socks for PE and normal.

Every single thing DS has is now labelled. Everything. Can he actually read his name? No! (to be fair - long and Welsh therefore not obeying the rules of "Jolly Phonics")

mummydoc · 04/09/2006 11:29

well in defence over the pants issue my DD1 swims at school and does sport 4 x week ( at very old fashioned prep where htey do "outdoor games every day) in the afternoon as children need fresh air and exercise" ) and they shower after games ( she is only 6!) so i htink htey just put back on the nearest knickers ! and lets face it when you are 6 everyones princess pants do look alike...and dd2 is at nusery and is potty training so knickers galore there....

mummydoc · 04/09/2006 11:32

anchovy love the descrition of never knowingly under-uniformed LOL ! doesn't that sum up all private preps ! my DD1 has 3 sets of different sports kit FFS and i have no pulp left on my index finger from sewing on name tapes and yep the school insisted on sew in tapes for everything apart from socks and pants...ahhhh

trinityrhino · 04/09/2006 11:34

I would never sew labels onto socks whether they asked me to or not, I think thats riduclous

LiliLaTigresse · 04/09/2006 11:36

I have managed to label everything (new school, new uniform with extensive PE kit and get this, a coat with detachable sleeves and you have to label the coat and EACH SLEEVE as well!!!!)
Now I have to label socks and tights (mountains of them)
but how do I label the swimming cap???

LunarSea · 04/09/2006 12:50

Don't sew them - get these ! And 10% off for mumsnetters too.

ja9 · 04/09/2006 12:52

each sleeve !!! loving it!!!

DumbledoresGirl · 04/09/2006 13:52

Can I pass on my label tip, having had 3 children enter the school system so far and 12 years of schooling between them. Buy labels with just your surname on them (unless of course, you are called Smith in which case, bad luck!) This makes for smaller labels to sew on in the first place, and also means you do not have to swap labels when you pass clothes down to a younger child.

eidsvold · 04/09/2006 13:55

haven't read the other replies - for dd1 - just loop them and sew ends together and to the sock.
