Going to private school open day this morning ... dh wants to go in his jeans?!

Do you think this is OK? He actually knows some of the staff as he does assemblies for them, and tours round the church, so maybe that's why he feels quite relaxed about it.

He's not quite as convinced as I am that we need to go the private route for secondary (though he is coming round to the idea). And he has been to open evenings for the local comps in jeans, so...

If you move to send your kids to a better school, you are essentialy saying that the other school isn't good enough. To my mind that isn't any different to saying, 'I'll pay to send mine to the school I want'. Now I don't have a problem with people doing either, it is a free country and all that . But it seems a bit hypocritical for you to decry one, and practice the other.

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:25

Look martianbishop, my prob. isn't the schools but the people. Sure move your kids around to find a good school, and if all that' available is private then that's a sad thing. It's the people that choose private over state even though the local state schools have superb pass rates. That's my grievance.

codface · 15/10/2005 21:26

dare i parp

roisin · 15/10/2005 21:26

ROFL paulapell! I take it your comments are directed at me as I started this thread. You criticise parents who "send their kids to private school without exploring all of the options". I spend all day every day working in the local secondary school, so I think I can happily say I have fully explored the options. I know far better than you what our local school is like, and believe me it would be hell for my ds1.

Two other local schools have slightly better reputations, but there is very little chance ds1 would get in either of them. And the others apparently are a little better or worse than the one I work at. Oh, except for the one which has some of the worst exam results in the entire country To consider schools any further we would have to move house. Dh is a Baptist Minister so we have to live by the church, or uproot completely and find new jobs.

Yes, but most of us don't and that is mine.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 15/10/2005 21:26

Some would say the people buying all the houses near the best schools are changing the intake anyway

It doesn't make any difference to us as DH teaches in a private school and DS will either go there or to local schools and has to take an exam to get in {even to the local comp}

I don't really care what others do as it is their choice what they want to do or where they want to live

And if they want to pay inflated prices for houses near in the best schools catchment area that is their choice too.

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 21:27

that was to paula btw, not cod and her parp

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:27

It's not you I'm digging at. You work hard and don't want you kids to go to a school where you suffered. More than understandable. It's others who are only concerned about showing off that their kids go private.

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:29

that was to martianbishop btw

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 21:31

Given that Roisin's dh is a Baptist minister and she works in a state school I'd put damn good money on the fact that they both work harder than I do, and for less dosh.....(not that its any of my buisness Roisin)

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:31

broomstick lady, unfortunately the house prices in our area are vastly inflated due to people moving from the South for cheaper housing and communiting via the reasonably local A1, not people moving in for good schools.

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:31

Sounds like you're all on plenty more money than we are.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 15/10/2005 21:33

well everyone is different and those differences make the world go round

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 21:34

paula, LMAO, at your envy of a Baptist ministers stipend! Sheesh, it is one of the worst paid jobs I know of!

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:34

Well, I think I've annoyed enough people for one evening, I hope you all have a good (what's left of) weekend.
Goodnight folks!

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 21:35

why drop in , if that is all you want to do?

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:36

Just one more then I'm gone, broomstick lady, you are so right. We should all be different and that's what make the world so interesting to live in, but we shouldn't ever believe we are better than others should we?

Goodnight...

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:37

martianbishop, because it's an interesting topic but I've got to go to bed right now as we are going out early tomorrow am...is that ok?

roisin · 15/10/2005 21:37

I was going to rise to it, but I'm not going to bother. Please excuse me if I ignore you Paula!

Yoyo I'm very jealous of you off to the Science Museum next week. I wish we lived nearer. Having said that dss are on the NHM mailing list, and they'd be desperate to go and see the diamonds exhibition instead right now!

Yes, insulting people is such a good way to get a message of universal equality over isn't it?

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 15/10/2005 21:38

But I am the best mummy in the universe

And so I know that I am better than ALL of you

So there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 21:39

roisin, hope you didn't think I was out of line discussing your finances, which as I said aren't my buisness. I only posted because my dad was a deacon in a Baptist chapel and we lost our minister because he couldn't raise his family on the stipend

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:39

You've all gone mad! I'm entitled to my opinion as much as anyone else, and if it differs to yours so what?

If I've geniunely upset anyone then I apologise, that would not have been my intention, however I doubt any of you feel that bothered do you? Unless any of you have heard the little old saying 'the truth hurts'.

paulapell · 15/10/2005 21:41

broomstick - no you're not I AM, and my kids are better that all of yours so there!, isn't that what we all think? just no need to let our kids think it too.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 15/10/2005 21:41

But Paula I KNOW I am better than you !!!!!!!!!!!

Cos I am the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
