eBay new payment system that excluded PayPal

Does anyone use this? Is it compulsory? I'm used to PayPal now ( I only sell stuff like my old clothes, I'm in no way a business seller) and don't really want hassle getting my money. Any experience or feedback would help as I keep getting 'invited' and feel it may end up me making less money ( I tend to sell stuff at £10-15)

I've been on managed payments for some months it works fine you can choose whether to be paid daily or weekly the fees are slightly less than before . There doesn't seem to be any problem with postage costs if you use ebay to print postage labels you can save a tiny bit more

RubyWooRed · 03/05/2021 18:30

Same as PP I miss having the separate PayPal slush fund account
I used to sell stuff and give myself a target like try to get £100 in it then transfer across to my bank in the oner.
Since the new payments system I’m getting all these random dribs and drabs into my current account and it’s just being absorbed instead of a separate wee pot for stuff for me.

Sooverthemill · 04/05/2021 10:04

@RubyWooRed same! Thinking about having a separate account just for this as it really motivates me to see it add up

I wonder if I could link my savings account instead of current account ... has anybody tried this ? Or does it have to be the account associated with your bank card ...

terryleather · 05/05/2021 15:51

Trying to switch to managed payments has been a complete and utter nightmare for me.

I've been avoiding doing it for months (much prefer Paypal for various reasons and don't really want Ebay having access to my bank account) but was told I'd have to do it by the end of April so started the process a couple of weeks ago. It has proved to be a Kafakaesque shitshow, which is still ongoing.

I don't have any photo ID (do have a passport but they won't accept it as it's out of date) and after much to-ing and fro-ing I was sent an email saying they would accept an old style drivers license plus current utility bill, tax statement or other official document. I immediately uploaded these as requested.

Cue almost two weeks of calls to eBay because I still have a red banner on my account and nobody I speak to is able to tell me what the problem is with the documentation or what I can do to sort it - I just have the same conversation over and over again with their customer service which is usually pretty shit but is beyond useless in this instance and there is no way to sort it as there is no "higher ups" that they will allow you to speak to. I'm absolutely scunnered with them.

Selling on Ebay has been my only form of income over the past year as the virus put paid to my job and although I would like nothing better than to never have to sell with them again I can't do without the income...that's if this ridiculous situation ever actually gets sorted out...

Sooverthemill · 05/05/2021 17:52

@terryleather that sounds dreadful. What are you selling? Might another website/ app be easier? I've just had my first 2 sales under the new system and have no idea if I've actually received any money despite buying postage. It's really annoying

I love paypal. So easy as a buyer and a seller. As others have said, nice having that PayPal balance separate to normal bank account.

Haven't sold for a while and now have a stash to list. Because a lot are collectable items, the best place to sell is ebay but being forced onto this new system is shit.

terryleather · 05/05/2021 18:28

Aww thanks for the vote of sympathy Sooverthemill!

I mostly sell clothes, but what I sell is quite niche so I don't think that Vinted etc would work for me as they seem to be aimed at a younger more fashion led market...could be wrong though!

Despite having had the usual run-ins with eBay over the years (because they always take the buyers side no matter how unreasonable) it's been a really lucrative source of income for me and at this point I really need it.

I don't like what I've been reading about the new system, not being paid immediately and sending items to buyers before you've received payment from eBay I think is a shocker.

I also don't like what yourself and others have been saying about the difficulty in keeping track of payments - do eBay email you when they make payments into your account?

terryleather · 05/05/2021 18:30

And yes SpacePotato, I like having my separate pot of PayPal money...!

doodlejump1980 · 05/05/2021 18:36

I sell things on eBay and loved the ease and instant-ness of PayPal. Ebay also sneakily added in sub-title fees which meant instead of the £4.55 I usually got per sale, I got £1.71!!! Ridiculous!!

Ouch! Ridiculous indeed.

The big problem is that they still dominate the market and for many of us the other options make us less. Until now anyway!

You choose to get paid daily or weekly, and when they send you the payout they email you to let you know the amount. I'm not a fan.

Thanks for the explanation TheInebriati.

Has anyone tried Schpock? I keep seeing their advertisements on tv and wondered whether they were easier to buy and sell.

I’ve got about 20 items sat on eBay atm and am wondering whether to take them down and put them up elsewhere as I’m not really liking the sound of this new system.

Spiceyornicey · 06/05/2021 07:28

I’ve tried schpock. Stuff listed for months with zero interest. Lots of timewasters, like on Facebook marketplace and gumtree. Not good.

RubyWooRed · 06/05/2021 11:30

I just tried to change my bank account , it wouldn’t let me , can only be a current account attached to my eBay , not a savings account.

I suppose I will have to be disciplined and move all the “Ayden “ eBay payments over from my current account to my savings and try build up a fund that way.
It’s just doing it before I spend it on normal day to day family stuff though

They say it’s daily payouts but mine seem to be getting lumped together and I’m getting them every few days instead. It’s going to take a bit of getting used to.

whiskeyfoxtrotcharlie · 06/05/2021 11:36

I've come to moan about the new payment system and it seems I have found my people! Like many posters, I used PayPal as a saving pot for Christmas and birthdays or I would sell my old clothes and slowly amass funds to buy a big ticket item like a coat or bag. It really suited me. It will also be difficult to keep track of payments under the new system and I am not happy about the enforced move. However, I do want to keep on selling clothes and accessories on eBay so I think the dedicated Monzo bank account might be the best way forward and I'm going to investigate – thank you @cozycat1 for suggesting that.

Blondiney · 06/05/2021 11:39

I keep reading about people being asked to provide photo ID and bank and tax statements. Is this just for business accounts?

Switched to the new payment system last week and so far they only asked for my bank account details. I absolutely refuse to hand over any other documents. The worry being that they'll hold funds (if I ever manage to sell anything) and demand further ID.

onemouseplace · 06/05/2021 11:40

I don't like it at all. I really liked paying for p&p out of the money in my paypal account and then every so often, taking a chunk out of Paypal when it had built up to something substantial.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 06/05/2021 11:42

If I remember rightly the shut off date when you HAVE to swap is 31st May. I'll be looking elsewhere for another site, no way I'm posting before getting the money to do so. EBay already heavily favour the buyer... This is just another way that sellers will be crapped on. What if as a small time occasional seller you don't have the cash to post without getting it as you're paid? Awful!

TeacupDrama · 06/05/2021 11:52

if you buy your postage on ebay they deduct money from sale price of item so your payout is less; also a small parcel Royal Mail label costs £3 on ebay as opposed to £3,20 at post office there is no difference in price for large letters, this also autommatically uploads tracking so once tracking says delivered the buyer will not win a not delivered case.
I have had managed payments for about 4 months now but I have both a business and a private account have never had any problems I choose to get paid once a week as it is easier on the accounting to have 52 payments a year not 365
daily only means Monday - friday so last week any payments on Friday - Monday would have been paid Tuesday because of Bank holiday

terryleather · 06/05/2021 13:13

Mine is a private seller account Blondiney

I don't know if my situation was caused by me using the option to manually input the bank details instead of going through eBay's third party (I wasn't happy to do this as I've previously been a victim of fraud on my account) but nonetheless EBay offered that as an option, I've jumped through all of their ridiculous hoops to prove who I am and still that's not good enough.

The inability to tell me what is wrong with my submissions, having to go through the same thing over and over and over again with no resolution is driving to the limit.

The way eBay have treated me as a customer of theirs who is also making them money is beyond a joke.

Sooverthemill · 06/05/2021 20:05

@TeacupDrama that's not what's happening to me. I've sold 4 things today and each time I've used PayPal ( as suggested by eBay) to purchase my Royal Mail postage. I was sent my first payment yesterday for the value of the things I'd sold earlier this week inc postage paid by buyer. I'm just selling clothes I no longer want. I'm not a business.

@whiskeyfoxtrotcharliei have a monzo account but I dint really want to use it for eBay!

OP posts:
FlipperSkipper · 07/05/2021 07:34

I’ve set up a separate pot in my Monzo account and transfer my eBay payments to that, minus the postage. I didn’t realise I could buy postage from eBay, I’ll have to look into that.
