Once single do you still sleep on your usual side of the bed?

Grateful to be single now for over 2 years after a 20 year relationship.

I've noticed I still sleep on one side of the double bed, the same side as I did when married.

There's half of the bed not used and even an empty bedside table and I'm starting to wonder if that's odd.

Is this a thing? Maybe I'll mix it up

I still sleep on one side since the divorce but I have noticed since I bought teen ds a double bed HE keeps himself to one side too he has never shared a bed with anyone sleeps with his butt hanging off the edge just like he did with his single bed!

I absolutely star fish across the whole bed or share with a DC if they want to come in with me. I dont miss sharing with H at all, its great. I bought a supersoft luxury mattress after we split after 10 years of sleeping on a rock hard cheapo mattress that H insisted was fine and I have lots of thows and pillows.
Also don't miss his wheezy snoring and the crap he had next to the bed like protein shakes and 5 different chargers!

I woke up to pillows on the floor and iPad dropped down the side of the bed. Slept well I think but clearly I was busy and everything wonky when I woke up.
I do think the unused side of the mattress was better though.

whenyou are peri menopausal you can roll over to the cool side when you have night sweats. V handy i find

Chasingsquirrels · 08/02/2025 09:46

Yes - King sized bed.
Although we'd lived in a number of places and I didn't necessarily have the same side in each place.

Then when I got together with 2nd DH I slept on the same "my side".

When DH died I still slept on my side.

And now I'm with DP I still sleep on my side whether he is here or not, although I use the middle a bit more when he isn't here.

All the same bedroom though, might be different in different places (weirdly I don't stick to the same side each time when away, it more depends on door & window placement).

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/02/2025 09:52

I have slept on "my side" since the first time we slept together, even though Mr MoastyToasty now sleeps in another bedroom because apparently I snore .
I only migrate to the other side if I have a night sweat or have a tummy bug (his side is closer to the bedroom door).

If you sleep in the middle, are your pillows in the middle?

My bed seems entirely set up for me and an invisible man.

After a while I ditched the extra pillows and now I move mine to whatever spot I’m sleeping in😊

I spent my whole life, even prior to living with anyone, lying right on the edge of my bed. I can remember being at a brownie camp and them being concerned I was going to fall out.

This continued even as an adult living alone with a double bed. It continued all through my 30 year relationship and marriage.

He finally moved out in June last year and I've slowly gravitate to the middle of our king size and now generally occupy "my side" plus right into and over the middle. I still get in and out my side but I've claimed most of the bed now and I'm sleeping the best I've slept in years. His bedside is empty of his shit and clean. It still has a lamp and I keep my air purifier on there too.

The room is about to be painted pink. My lovely crisp white bedding is complimented by cosy blankets and pillows and is made immaculately every morning. It just makes my heart so happy.

Best wishes to all enjoying your freedom 💪

My bed seems entirely set up for me and an invisible man.

I tend to sleep on my front so don't really use my pillows at all, so sleeping in the middle just works better anyway.

Not single but DH is out tonight and I am sprawled across the bed, I was away last week for work for a couple of days and slept smack bang in the middle of the bed, so I'd imagine if I was single again I'd be starfishing pretty immediately, it's also how I slept before DH and I lived together

superplumb · 09/02/2025 09:09

Chucked husband out almost 3 weeks ago after I caught the bastard cheating. My 11 year sleeps with me now in my bed..on his old side.

SilentRetreat · 09/02/2025 10:23

It just feels off to me to sleep on the other side BUT I am going to turn the mattress around as it's definitely firmer on the unused side.

I'm moving to a new place soon so I will see if things change with the new room layout.

I sleep, on what was, his side.
Nearest the door.
Totally different house..
When I meet up with my new man, I revert to my original side.
I think it's a safety thing.
Someone needs to be near the door to thump intruders with slippers.

I started a similar thread some years ago and I was glad to see I wasn't alone in this.

It didn't even occur to me as a thing, until the one side of my (extra king size) mattress started to dip on the side I sleep. I had rotated it and after a few months I could feel it dipping again. So my plan was, to sleep in the middle seeing as that part is untouched essentially.

But I couldn't. I gave it a few nights and I still could not get comfortable sleeping in the wrong spot.

I did come up with a very clever plan in the end though. I rotated the mattress halfway, so I I do really sleep in the middle, but still in my same spot. Ok the duvet cover falls a bit short one side, but meh, no one but me will see it.

One of the posts on that thread made me chuckle so much and I think of that poster from time to time. They said 'who are these people sleeping like pencils every night' 😂 I admit, I am indeed a pencil. The other side is the bed is always perfectly made.

I had surgery recently and the other side was perfectly made up. Laptop, earphones, books etc. Didn't need to move them at night and they were still perfectly placed when I woke.

Oh and in the bedside cupboard on the other side, is where I store my toilet rolls.

I can see no downside to my situation.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 09/02/2025 10:52

I slept on 'my side' for 12 years

Now not moved over cause one of the bed slats on my side broke 🤣

Got a new bed and now sleep diagonally surrounded by cats!

sunshinewithrain · 09/02/2025 11:06

For as long as I can remember, single or not, doesn't matter what house I've lived in (there's been a few over the years), or if I'm in a hotel etc..... I ALWAYS sleep on the left side of the bed on my left side, so facing the edge of the bed 🤣 I'm not single currently but I can't bare him breathing near me, I don't cuddle, I don't like him touching me when sleeping either, just leave me be on my left side 🤣 i don't really move either..... not unusual for me to wake up with dead leg or arm

livelovelough24 · 12/02/2025 23:16

Absolutely, yes! 🤣🤣
