Once single do you still sleep on your usual side of the bed?

Grateful to be single now for over 2 years after a 20 year relationship.

I've noticed I still sleep on one side of the double bed, the same side as I did when married.

There's half of the bed not used and even an empty bedside table and I'm starting to wonder if that's odd.

Is this a thing? Maybe I'll mix it up

I do! But I'm enjoying the other bedside table which looks nice now instead of covered in all manner of shit. Small wins😁

SilentRetreat · 07/02/2025 19:13

Yes! Nice and tidy and no coffee stains. Excellent.

But I never venture over there in the night.

Yes

Mumteedum · 07/02/2025 19:16

Funnily enough I don't. And I've only just thought about it as you're asking. I slept in the middle when we split. Felt weird without him there...then gradually..I seem to have migrated! I'm in my ex-husband's spot now. Lol.

PartyGoose · 07/02/2025 19:18

I just starfish 😂 and bloody love it, even if I ever meet someone else I'm sending them home to sleep. Never sharing my bed again.

CleanShirt · 07/02/2025 19:18

Weirdly when exh left I gravitated toward his side (his side was better). Now I live on my own and sleep slap bang in the middle.

Magmum75 · 07/02/2025 19:18

Ha, yes. It's a huge super king, I only little and there's no point having both sides of the electric blanket on to keep it toasty

MarkingBad · 07/02/2025 19:18

Yes but I do use the middle too in the night but I do go to sleep and generally wake up on the one side

Ladyandherspaniel · 07/02/2025 19:19

Yeah I do , my exs side seems to be where I keep my midnight snacks 😂 , my tablet and my laptop sits there next to me and I scrunch myself up on the other side of the double bed like he’s still there ! Weird . I haven’t slept on his side since he died.

shellyleppard · 07/02/2025 19:19

I try and starfish but the cat hogs one pillow 🤣🤣

Flicitytricity · 07/02/2025 19:20

Yes, since DH died, I still sleep on 'my side', but the dogs have moved in to his side, so most nights I'm still fighting for covers and listening to snores😆

Mittens67 · 07/02/2025 19:20

No, I often sleep diagonally now fitted around my lovely cat who is much nicer bed company than any bloke.

SilentRetreat · 07/02/2025 19:23

I still sleep on the side that's not even the convenient side to get to.

It's not even the same bed or room.

I think I'll have a go on the other side tonight.

Sleeping in the middle seems weird to me for some reason.

Still in a 20+ year marriage, but don't always sleep together cos I snore. But when together, what's strange is that I'm on the left in our overseas home, but on the right in our English home - whether DW is there or not, in both cases.

ScottBakula · 07/02/2025 19:25

Yes I still sleep on my side of the bed. Though a few nights ago my cat was sleeping in my spot so I got in bed on the other side.
It felt weird !

LikeMyHeartIsAboutToStopBeating · 07/02/2025 19:27

Yes but with way more star fishing. If I'm spending time there in the morning I make a point of moving the pillows to the middle and sprawling.

The best thing is knowing I don't have to limit how much space I take up physically or emotionally any more. My bed is now my safe place.

RockStarMartini · 07/02/2025 19:27

I couldn’t sleep on ‘his’ side for years after my divorce, it was perfectly amicable but it just didn’t feel right. I do more now but it still feels like I’m rebelling a bit 😳😂

voodoodollwithmyname · 07/02/2025 19:28

3 years on and I still largely sleep on "my" side - I try and go in the middle but it still feels a bit weird

One of the cats has claimed his pillow though so i still have to put up with snoring coming from that side of the bed 😂

I'm with @PartyGoose . I sleep all over the bed generally, apart from when I'm really knackered - I must not move an inch. Later in the week I switch to the other side of the bed and it is like a freshly made bed .... take 2.

SilentRetreat · 07/02/2025 19:32

Maybe it's not related to being in a relationship then not. Maybe most people just have a side?

OP posts:
frogpigdonkey · 07/02/2025 19:34

I'm long term single and always have slept on my preferred side of the bed. Occasionally migrate towards the middle but never sleep on the other side. Even true in hotels! Just feels right 😁

setmestraightplease · 07/02/2025 19:35

Totally! :)

A friend once said to me ' why would you still sleep on one side of the bed, when you have to whole bed to yourself??!'

I still sleep on the same side, because that's the side I was happiest sleeping on when I was married (husband didn't really have a choice! 😬)

and I have a lovely easy reach for my bedside table on the side I prefer.

If I want to roll over and spread out, I have the choice ............. but, yes i think we're sometimes just happy sleeping where we're happiest, regardless of how much room there is :)

Almostwelsh · 07/02/2025 19:35

No. I took possession of his side. I don't sleep in the middle because it's too far to stretch my arm out to switch off the alarm.

vipersnest1 · 07/02/2025 19:39

I still sleep on the same side as like @Almostwelsh I can't reach my alarm if I'm in the middle.

SilentRetreat · 07/02/2025 19:44

It would make more sense for me to sleep on the other side with the way the room is laid out.
