I like the ITV coverage too, for the music obvs but also for Millar commentating, in my head he is sort of the Eeyore of cycling but I like him for it anyway.

MrPan · 12/07/2019 08:15

The very best 'royal procession all day commentaries' coming up today.
Hopefully the scenery will help make up for it.
Not sure why they just don't do a 25km stage and save all of the mither and boredom of the other 150km.

Unless Greipel or Boassen-Hagen get their respective acts together, I'll not be getting any points today WinkBike

MrPan · 12/07/2019 15:39

Just checked in live reporting, s-l-o-w pace today..reckon me and Spech could keep up with them. For a bit.

Woo hooooooo well done Dylan! Sorry, I've had a soft spot for that boy since he did well in my native Tour de Yorkshire Grin

MrSlant · 12/07/2019 21:37

Aside from that, and this isn't rhetorical, what is the point of a day like that? Modern pelotons rarely let the break away do the epic escapes they used to. I know they need to cross over to the next area of France but don't they have cars/trains? Or is it just to keep their legs ticking over which normal transport wouldn't do? Nico Roche said it was a nice way of catching up with all his mates because they could chat, they were 30 mins behind the slowest published time at one point!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/07/2019 22:41

I was wondering that too. Fair enough have a flat stage to let the sprinters have a go at something but does it need to be quite so long?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/07/2019 12:57

Son has some French homework this week which is "find out about the tour de France". Tee hee. How much do they want to know do you think?

prettybird · 13/07/2019 15:07

Ds said about yesterday's stage was that it was actually more dangerous and no more tiring than a short stage.

More dangerous because the peloton loses concentration, so that a touch of wheels can cause a crash. Fortunately that didn't happen yesterday although I don't know what caused the early crash

A short stage is just as tiring because they don't take their time like they did yesterday Wink He pointed out that the 100km stage last year was really exciting.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/07/2019 21:00

Well that was better. (understatement).

Very pleased that the winner won!

MrSlant · 13/07/2019 21:48

Thank you prettybird DS, useful, I totally agree with the long slow stages being so dangerous, you can't relax in that peloton!

Endo please let school have it with everything you all know, that would be brilliant.

I didn't get to see today's stage (football tournament, joy) but I am wildly annoyed at BBC Wales who are reporting that G crashed and that is why he is now far down on the overall leader. That's not true, shoddy journalism all round. Endo maybe you should copy and paste the BBC into DS homework too Wink.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/07/2019 22:21

Son doesn't actually watch the tour, (unless you count 2014, live, but he doesn't really remember that). We kept it brief!

Looking forward to some Bastille Day fun and French winners (?) tomorrow, also hoping that Richie Porte makes it through....

It's my wedding anniversary tomorrow - didn't get married on Bastille Day on purpose but it does make it easier to remember when it is as le Tour always reminds me....

prettybird · 13/07/2019 23:03

Ds did a whole project on the TdF when he was in P7 and was just obsessed by interested in cycling.

He might not be cycling competitively any more - but he's just transferred his obsession to all sports Hmm (although rugby in particular as that's the one he plays very well Wink)

DoctorTwo · 14/07/2019 09:50

I won't be watching live today as the cricket is on Channel 4, followed by the British Grand Prix then the Men's Final from Wimbledon. I will watch on catch up.

I think in 4 or 5 years Alaphilippe will be a GC contender. Mind you, I said the same thing about G, and whatever happened to Him?

prettybird · 14/07/2019 10:12

I think we're going to be having 4 screens in the living room today so that ds can watch the cycling, the tennis, the cricket (he'll be supporting NZ Wink) and the Grand Prix.

He'll have to use his laptop, my laptop and the iPad, as well as the TV.

Our broadband will be taking a hammering!

Dh, meanwhile, will be watching the Tour outside on his Mac, while he does gardening - and I'll also dip in and out. Bike

MrPan · 14/07/2019 13:16

Yes well done Dr you said that years ago and I doubted it iirc. Chapeau.

If we could just expunge from the record the bit where I said the break never got to 15 minutes anymore I would much appreciate it. Thank you Blush.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 15/07/2019 20:42

Well well well, we didn't expect today to be the day to reshuffle the top 10 did we?!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/07/2019 21:18

Nope, and neither did anyone else!

MrSlant · 15/07/2019 22:56

Echelons

Grin
FelicityLemon · 16/07/2019 14:03

Woo! Echelons!

It's been quite an exciting weekend. Shame about Pinot, I'd love to have seen a French winner of the TdF.

In other news I managed to get the autograph of the Maillot Jaune at the ToB last year

Whoever sent Gordon George Bennett to fetch drinks needs a good kick up the arse.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/07/2019 17:45

If I was Gordon I'd be feeling pretty cross.

MrPan · 17/07/2019 17:31

Ah were there sunnies today?
Mine are now taller than me but still with little green faces. 🌻
