I thought shiney or shiny was an American English and British English thing.

Ooh, nice here, innit?

Report
AphraBane · 28/01/2014 18:18

That was meant to be more of an exclamation than a question. Nice here innit!

I started the thread (giving away my American upbringing with 'shiney' Grin) and ran away to supervise feeding time at the zoo.

So, velvet chesterfields - check
Library with dusty tomes - check
Superfast interweb access - check

Anything else??

Hard copy OED.

Preferably all 24 volumes + the occasional updates in hardback.

"Anything else??"

A plaque on the wall honouring Brian for the name, given that a share of the profits is a little unlikely. Grin

Hurrah!

Loved the thread last night!

I missed the thread about 'who'd understand me on my high street how far back' and now it's developed so nicely, I'm just lurking on it. V good though.

Is it weird that I just posted this and then went on Active Convos to see what it looked like there? Grin

I've asked MNHQ if they'll move the High Street thread, the one I linked earlier, and the 'oleaginous' thread to this topic. I hope they at least do the first, as otherwise it'll expire as it's in Chat (the other two are in permanent topics).

Oh, good idea, some retrospective tidying-up Smile

I was wondering if, rather than gentrifying, this topic will attract .. um .. interesting Friday night posts?

So exciting to see 9 different threads on this board already.

I will have to wait until tomorrow to explore them fully - but it's going to make a rainy Wednesday a happy day for me.

Have not really dabbled much in the linguistic side of MN... yet.... but do love some word play.... we were told by our English Language teacher (in Scotland) 30+ years ago Shock

ghoti (fish) could also be silent ..... gh(though) - o(people) – t(ballet) - i(business)... I wanted to say pronounced silently, but that didn't make sense...

When we moved to Cheshire my primary teacher marked me down when I said that fur and hair rhymed, because for me, they did, and in fact still do!

I still burn with the injustice.

Me: Oops, sorry. I see that now! How arrogant of me. I shall wait a little longer for my 15 mins of fame.

I do intend returning to this topic regularly though.

May I join you?

I am the owner of a hard-backed OED and many dusty tomes

Unfortunately the OED is the third edition from 1934 Blush
