Ooh. It's a bit empty in here.

It's a bit daunting having a whole new topic to play in. Where to start?

AuntieStella · 28/01/2014 17:38

Probably with a 'dreadful puns' thread Grin

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 28/01/2014 17:39

How about a linguistics joke?
(disclaimer here, have never done any languages after secondary school level so don't know if I've got the terminology quite right!)

Linguistics professor begins class by saying that some languages have a double negative that means a positive, others have a positive and a negative that result in a positive, but there are no double positives that come out negative.

Sarky voice from back of class:
"Yeah, right"

MardyBra · 28/01/2014 17:39

Are you referring to my user name Auntie Stella?

magimedi · 28/01/2014 17:40

This is very exciting!

A good pun is its own reword.

alexpolistigers · 28/01/2014 17:44

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 28/01/2014 17:57

MardyBra · 28/01/2014 17:59

complex It's taken a bit longer than that.

MardyBra · 28/01/2014 18:01

Is "shiney" a word?

There used to be a MNer whose user name was shortened to "Shiney" a lot (she of the penguin fame in Classics iirc). Is she still around?

MardyBra · 28/01/2014 18:01

You're not going all pedanty on us are you Zero? Wink

DrankSangriaInThePark · 28/01/2014 18:01

Whilst my linguistics teacher asked all of us in first year lecture hall to finish the sentence:

I ought to do it.....I?

2 of us, out of about 100 answered with "didn't I?" and he told us he could tell us exactly where we came from. He was right.

I did the old ghoti= fish George Bernard Shaw thing with my Italian students this morning...

AuntieStella · 28/01/2014 18:02

Was I imagining it, or was there a thread a while ago when someone asked who else had studied or was interested in linguistics and loads of people joined in?

I've tried to search for it, but nothing.

Anyone else remember? And if it's found, might it be worth asking for it to be moved here? (Or was it in chat, and gone forever?)

alexpolistigers · 28/01/2014 18:04

I remember it, AuntieStella. I think it was in Chat. I posted loads on it.

Indith · 28/01/2014 18:05

There was one in Chat a couple of years ago, started by Psammead.

alexpolistigers · 28/01/2014 18:06

And there was another linguistics-related thread that got moved to Bilingualism, back in the summer, if I remember rightly

Annunziata · 28/01/2014 18:09

Ciao a tutti :) Alex, you should start an Italian thread here!

MardyBra · 28/01/2014 18:09

And there was the Occitane thread in AIBU which went off in all sorts of directions.

AuntieStella · 28/01/2014 18:11

alexpolistigers This thread?

alexpolistigers · 28/01/2014 18:12

That's the one, AuntieStella!

alexpolistigers · 28/01/2014 18:14
