oh the first few times i saw the quinny zapp thread my heart leapt..lol..
the zappatas thread ..was that it?

sheik, thanks for starting this one! dunno why i never did one earlier,... did do a few mentions here and there..
still getting the hang of this place i guess!

was told after i first appeared that there was only one suzy in the village though so stuck around just to annoy mainly ...

Sputnik · 18/01/2008 15:14

You're right about the permeating, I can remember hearing Zappa songs way before I actualy started liking them. I have been playing odd bits of Zappa to my sis for years, then recently she asked for a copy of Absolutely Free

The thing about Zappa is he took the piss out of everyone, including himself, so equal-opportunities offensiveness

LadyThingFishAlot · 18/01/2008 15:16

oh yes, zappa saw stupidity in everyone

SheikYerbouti · 18/01/2008 15:59

I can't go into a p[etrol station without thinking of "Wind up working in a gas station"

This here song might offend you some.
If it does, it's because you're dumb.

there is a woman i see locally with no chin!
cant help it everytime i see her,
that fast bit of music and
'spent all of my life trying to grow me a chin..'
...comes into my mind...imagining little terry bozzio thwacking out it the drums...

too much talent not enough time!
i think there is some more stuff to be released by zappa family ...

sputnik you are so right...tis time for a namechange o orbital one?

SheikYerbouti · 20/01/2008 08:44

suzy!

OP posts:
suzycreamcheese · 20/01/2008 18:50

thought i was the threadkiller of my favourite thread!!
...

FrannyandZooey · 20/01/2008 19:00

ok I have Frank Zappa INITIALS how about that?

I probably don't belong here as I only know about 2 albums but I really, really, really like You are what you is especially the 4 songs from You are what you is to Dumb all Over

so can I just loiter here near the door?

suzycreamcheese · 20/01/2008 19:10

hmm
yes
..well, i've always been a bit uber of your intials FZ
class

come loiter or join in..
swirly chair or bean bag...i bags sofa

and they are damn fine albums (he did over 70)

suzycreamcheese · 20/01/2008 19:15

and
sheik
dont tell me YOU wouldn't have had that toon pop into your head if same chinless wonder crossed your path of vision???

also, question for those with uber cool parents with musical taste
...what did you rebel against?..what did you shock them with when the teenage angst & hate kicked in?

or was it healthy good relationships all round and they remembered what it was like and everyone hung round at your house mum baking hash cookies and loud jamming?????...

LadyThingFishAlot · 20/01/2008 19:59

yes, i was raised on some seriously cool shit!

my dad even converted our garage into a room for smokin and listening to some cool moosac. mum baked cakes for us to munch on. happy days

i rebelled by getting into dance music which my dad was not keen on at all...

SputnikEnRegalia · 21/01/2008 10:52

Ta Da!

(sorry, off having a weekend)

My parents are very into classical music and especially modern music, and every so often a Zappa piece gets played at concerts they go to, so they're coming at it from the other direction kind of thing. (I'm slowly converting my family).

I have been inspired by this thread to broaden Baby Sputnik's musical education (he is 7 months) and he's currently door bouncing to a Zappa selection. He loved RDNZL, but I don't have the really great version with Ruth Underwood on percussion anymore, I feel some CD buying coming on.....

F&Z I was listening to You are What You Is the other day, it really is a classic. I'm sure we can help you if you'd like to expand your Zappa knowledge

LadyThingFishAlot · 21/01/2008 11:32

omg. ruth underwood is amazing. my dad used to have a vid of her playing. she's so good it's hard to believe that's one woman playing even when it's right before your eyes.

SputnikEnRegalia · 21/01/2008 11:34

She retired to concentrate on her family, what a shame

SheikYerbouti · 21/01/2008 15:24

Ok, when I grew up, Dad was into dope/Gong/Jefferson/Grateful Dead/Zappa/Beefheart/Doors/Led Zep

Mum was into Showaddywaddy/Wham/Human league/Earth Wind & Fire/Boney M/Elton and tried a fag once when she was 17 and it made her vom

It's no surprise their marriage lasted no longer then 8 years!

My mum is still uber sensible and Dad is still a Pot Head Pixie

I always much preferred my old man's tase in music, surprisingly

OP posts:
SputnikEnRegalia · 21/01/2008 15:42

I'll admit to having been partial to a bit of Gong

SheikYerbouti · 21/01/2008 15:49

I love Gong

SputnikEnRegalia · 22/01/2008 13:14

Never heard of them, thanks for that

LadyThingFishAlot · 22/01/2008 15:19

if you ever feel sad listen to that song. you can't possibly be sad whilst listening to it

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2008 15:22

WQhat does everyon;e DH/DP think of Zappa? DP doesn;t really get it. He like u2

OP posts:
LadyThingFishAlot · 22/01/2008 15:30

dh likes it. he is into all kinds of music though and he plays the piano and can appreciate the musical genius of the composition and the people who play it.

having said that, i expect we did brainwash him a bit

some of it is quite difficult to get your head around though, doesn't he even like the more easy listening stuff like bobby brown goes down, he's so gay etc? just the pure comedy value is enough to get some people interested.

or watching a live concert (on dvd obv) is amazing so you can actually see what they have to do to achieve that sound.

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2008 15:33

No, the only song he likes is Zoot Allures

OP posts:
LadyThingFishAlot · 22/01/2008 16:00

hmmm... perseverence!

try playing it to him whilst he's asleep

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2008 16:10

mmm, good idea

anything's got to be bettter fdor hin than u farking 2
