I want to do a Cat Stevens song, but I am worrying that they might sound a bit tuneless when anyone other than Cat Stevens sings them

I need something nice and low and lovely to sing

dp needs not too hard guitar accompaniment for which we can find the chords online

I do know the occasional song that is not on a Putumayo album, you know

If I am going to do a Putumayo song that isn't "You are my sunshine" it will be "the Bellybutton song"

Blu · 10/06/2007 21:53

Do you know Grandma's Hands?
I have it on an old Bill Withers CD.

Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:53

My baby just cares for me? I know it's not a folk song really.

The Lake of Pontchartrain is nice and quite easy (can think of a Hothouse Flowers version and a more rackety Pogues one)
or how about Sonny - it's sung by Emmylou Harris on the Bringing It All Back Home compilation

Blu · 10/06/2007 21:55

You're just singing along on a Sunday evening, aren't you, Aloha?
I'm singing 'my baby just cares...' now...with the Nina Simone 'dum-de-dump-de dump....'

If you are YouTubing then you might find it under Lakes of Ponchartrain

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:56

Blu · 10/06/2007 21:56

I used to sing Grandma's Hands to DS when he was a baby - used to make me cry - can't sing it now, he would think about his alive grandma...

MrsBadger · 10/06/2007 21:56

[searches memory banks]

you could go for rip-roaring with Sally Maclellan

or something gospelly - maybe one of the Alison Kraus ones from O Brother Wher Art Thou?

KT Tunstall?

Aloha · 10/06/2007 22:04

This works for Tom Waits, and he can't sing at all (bless him)
The sky's as deep as it can be
Bend down the branches
Close your eyes and you will see
Bend down the branches

You're like a willow
Once you were gold
We're made for bending
Even beauty gets old

Climb the stairs they're not so steep
Bend down the branches
Close your eyes and go to sleep
Bend down the branches

I've just been listening on Amazon...very nice!
Freight Train is good too. Someone played it after my dad's funeral. He was a musician and all his friends came to the pub afterwards with guitars and banjos and sang and played. Dd was dancing at the the front. It makes me cry to think about it, but it was fantastic, it really was.

Aloha · 10/06/2007 22:07

Oh didn't mean to say that - just mean you should be able to do it better!
