I want to do a Cat Stevens song, but I am worrying that they might sound a bit tuneless when anyone other than Cat Stevens sings them

I need something nice and low and lovely to sing

dp needs not too hard guitar accompaniment for which we can find the chords online

Yes - I think it is a bit harder than some to play, which is why my best f is only just learning it now, needs must and all...but oh how good would it sound?!

My guitar playing friends always play at least one Bare Naked Ladies song when we have a camp or at a mini fest round the fire..usually a bad version of If I Had A Million Dollars, but often other stuff too, and its great to sing with/bang drums/tambourines etc.

Enid · 10/06/2007 21:33

Hurt? and you thought steave earle was depressing

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:34

Oh thank you grunjile

you don't think it is a bit droney unless you are very good singer? With those tricky high bits for good measure?

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 21:35

Franny - yes you should do Hurt! Its quite simple I think, and low. I love both versions

grunjle · 10/06/2007 21:35

lol enid! No F and Z, practice amd make it yours

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:35

grunjle · 10/06/2007 21:36

new england!

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:36

LOL Enid I am not going to do Hurt, but someone else did it last year

I was saying it does not have to be strictly folk, IMO

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 21:36

Enid - it fits all the other criteria, other than the depressing bit...!

Where is the festival Franny?

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:37

Pavlov I am being coy and not saying

I wouldn't recognise "folk" if it slapped me in the face - but easy songs to sing.....

MorningTown ride?
Solitaire?
Liverpool Lullaby?
You'll never walk alone?????(maybe not)

Something by Don Mcl???n (I can't remember his name) - but he does some really funny ones that are easy to sing

These are probably useless as I don't know any of the others that have been suggested

Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:41

Sound of Silence? You are my sunshine? Actually, I like I'll be your mirror. Reminds me of my university days.
Hey,what do I know...

Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:42

Oh, recently on Radio 4, Loudon Wainwright did a folky version of a song from the musical Guys and Dolls called More I cannot wish you, and it was utterly swoonsome.

ahundredtimes · 10/06/2007 21:42

Oh yes, New England is a brilliant suggestion, and I think you can get away with not having a great voice.

Though obviously, i really want you to do Ring of Fire or another J Cash classic. . . .

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 21:42

Billy Bragg - IMO Billy always does the trick, you wont go wrong.
Shall I shut up? I am just jeolous.

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:42

Oh we have a nice low mournful version of You are my sunshine, that's a very good idea...

I do NOT think I can carry off I'll Be Your Mirror. I think dp is teasing me

Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:43

I love you a bushell and a peck is also very sweet imo.

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 21:44

Franny - i was not thinking of crashing it

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:44

hmm hmmm

Billy Bragg

what are the guitar bits like? Not totally easy are they?

OP posts:
Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:44

I would sing You are My sunshine to ds and find myself with a cracked voice and tears in my eyes!

The other night, dear, when I was sleeping, I dreamed I had you in my arms, when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken, so I hung my head down and cried....sob

ahundredtimes · 10/06/2007 21:45

Can't you do These Boots are Made for Walking or something and cheer everyone up a bit?

wrinklytum · 10/06/2007 21:45

DP has suggested "Don't stop" by Fleetwood Mac,E major,D major, and A major all the way through.......or "Stairway to Heaven"

Enid · 10/06/2007 21:46

Bananaphone

Aloha · 10/06/2007 21:47

Johnny Cash lyrics:

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 21:47
