'Sad' Songs - inspiration please!

BassMama · 06/04/2007 00:45

This is going to sound very weird.. but:

My band have been asked to play a gig at an underground festival.. basically, the set is to consist of 3 hours of songs that will (quote) 'make people cry, in an uplifting way. Songs that will get you in the gut (any genre)'

NOW - the examples they gave were things like

Bon Jovi - ill be there for you
Rod Stewart - Handbags and Gladrags
Oasis - Little by little
Robbie - Come Undone
My Chemical Romance - Black parade

There were more.. I cant remember now!

Anyway - I rand the lads and we're all quite up for it as its not really the sort of thing we do. We have 4 months to practise, and learn all the new songs.

SO - our 'homework' is to each come up with 30 suggestions, and then we'll choose 30 songs out of the 150 to do.

So - any help with my list would be HUGELY appreciated!

Lyrics to Hootie

Tomorrow used to be a day away
Now love is gone and you're into someone far away.
I never thought the day would come
When I would see his hand, not mine,
holding onto yours because I could not find the time.
Now I can't deny
nothing lasts forever
I don't want to leave
and I see the tear drops in your eyes
I don't want to live to see the day we say goodbye
Now there comes another part of life that I call alone
sitting at a bar with Chris
and I can't leave 'cause my house ain't no home, no.
I just wanna touch you girl
I wanna feel you close to me
Without your love I would give up now
and walk away so easily.
So maybe while you're young
We'll figure out together
that even with the pain, there's a remedy
and we'll be all right
I don't want to live to see the day we say goodbye.
When I first met you I couldn't love anyone
but you stole my dreams and you made me see
that I can walk under the sun
and I can still be me
and now I can't deny nothing lasts forever.
But I don't want to leave and see the teardrops in your eyes
So baby while we're young let's figure out together
that even with the pain there's a remedy
and we'll be all right.
I don't want to live to see the day we say goodbye,
we say goodbye, oh goodbye, goodbye.

EasterChickenBunny · 06/04/2007 18:15

Joni Mitchell - Both sides now
Guns n' Roses - Patience
The Beatles - She's Leaving Home

filthymindedvixen · 06/04/2007 18:24

bassmama - you are going to come back and let us know your shortlisted songs so we can howl 'noooo' or shout abuse at the screen when we disagree strongly etc??

( I really need to get a life, right?)

shonaspurtle · 06/04/2007 18:36

One of the songs that makes me cry is I will always love you.

Not the Whitney Houston version which is all loud, show-offy defiance imo, but Dolly's original version.

In my mind it's a poor teenage mother singing to her new baby who she's putting up for adoption - I'm sure that's not what she was singing about but the song has always sounded like a desperately sad lullaby to me.

Not suitable for a band really but one of the saddest songs I know.

Marina · 06/04/2007 18:53

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where the Time Goes
Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band: Adam Raised a Cain
Emmylou Harris - Sonny
The Hothouse Flowers - The Lake of Ponchartrain
Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas (a little something in the language of lovers peut-etre)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (I think that's the title, it's a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song I think)
The Walker Brothers - No Regrets

filthymindedvixen · 06/04/2007 19:04

oh god yes, Hurt!!

And Kate Bush This Woman's Work (though maybe that only gets you if you're a mother...)

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 06/04/2007 19:05

unchained melody

lou33 · 06/04/2007 19:15

i think they should do "I will survive"

dumbymummy · 06/04/2007 19:22

Straight out of left field - Vera Lynn with a lot of base. We'll Meet Again or the White Cliffs of Dover - ohhh, they'll be crying alright (in an uplifted way, of course).

lou33 · 06/04/2007 19:30

i'll be seeing you

DrDaddy · 06/04/2007 19:32

Sad, but also uplifting? Interesting. Much as I like Radiohead and Joy Division, they are probably too depressive....I mean,'Love will tear us apart'...pass the razor blade, love.

Here goes:

Impossible Things - The Cure (from Wish)
Mad World - Tears for Fears (not the awful Gary Jules version)
Breathing - Kate Bush
Chasing Cars / You could be happy - Snow Patrol
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Three Times a Lady - Lionel Richie
Private Universe - Crowded House
Where have all the flowers gone? - Peter Seegar
And a couple that are uplifting, but sad because of what happened to the artists, etc.

We've only just begun - The Carpenters
Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush

DrDaddy · 06/04/2007 19:34

Oh... I almost forgot:

Mothers, Daughters, Wives - The Corries. Will have you weeping in yer haggis..

filthymindedvixen · 06/04/2007 19:39

Gorecki - Lamb
''If I should die this very moment, I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you
Still in my heart this moment
Or it might burst
Could we stay right here
Until the end of time until the earth stops turning
Wanna love you until the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for''

Oh, and Richard Thomspon writes fantastic - ballad of James and Red Molly
Beeswing

Even my dh had a 'moment' when he heard these...so beautiful

JoanCrawford · 06/04/2007 19:45

Music When the Lights Go Out - The Libertines.

filthymindedvixen · 06/04/2007 19:45
